View Full Version : Malzahn Bowl 2008 - Tulsa vs Arkansas

bri

Casey Dick is currently finding the holes in Tulsa's pass defense, Woo Pig Sooie has it inside TU's 15.

Sweet, another shootout for one of my favorite teams. :D

Go Cane!

is this game on TV?

bri
11/1/2008, 01:17 PM
ESPN Gameplan/ESPN 360. I'm surprised CBS College Sports didn't pick this one up.

TD Arkansas, and they lead 7-0. Tulsa's turn. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 01:23 PM
Demetrius Johnson only got 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff return, and David Johnson has been swarmed under and sacked on the first two plays. Uh oh.

And of course, the homer Arkansas announcers waste no time in breaking out a smug "Welcome to the SEC!"

A.J. Whitmore can't even get back to the line of scrimmage out of the Wildcat package. Tulsa loses yards on all three plays and goes three-and-out on their first drive. Arkansas ball at their own 42.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:27 PM
Arkansas gets a big gain on a catch and run by the RB, and they're back inside the Tulsa red zone. Time out, 'Cane.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:28 PM
And again, the Arkie announcers break out the "SEC ZOMG" crap.

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 01:31 PM
Heh, last time I checked, Sagarin had the SEC as the 4th best conference this year behind the Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC, in that order.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:32 PM
TU, after realizing that they're allowed to defend and tackle the far superior SEC players, bow up and hold Arkie to a field goal. Hogs lead 10-0 with 5:57 left in the first.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:35 PM
After our first three and out, Gus is re-thinking the strategy and runs Tarrion Adams on the first play. Second down is an incompletion by David Johnson.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:36 PM
Johnson completes a pass under heavy pressure, but two yards short of the sticks. Punt #2 upcoming for Tulsa.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:39 PM
On 3rd and 9 from their own 36, Arkansas gets the first down by the nose of the football. Tulsa needs a stop...badly.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:40 PM
Another 20+ yard gain by Pig. I hate to say it, but right now Tulsa looks grossly overmatched. :(

Timeout, Tulsa.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:44 PM
Touchdown, Arkansas.

17-0 with 2:22 in the first. If Tulsa's offense can't get on track this upcoming drive, it's gonna get ugly real quick.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:47 PM
Tulsa's inability to advance the kickoff return beyond the 20 is crippling their offense. Meh.

bri
11/1/2008, 01:47 PM
HOLY SH*T! TULSA GETS A FIRST DOWN!! SUCCESS!!!

Ardmore_Sooner
11/1/2008, 01:49 PM
Keep keepin' us updated Bri!

bri
11/1/2008, 01:50 PM
TOUCHDOWN TULSA!!!

That cuts it to 17-7 with :47 left in the first. I feel a little better.

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 01:51 PM
Go Tulsa! At least they've kept their streak of scoring in every quarter this year alive.

badger
11/1/2008, 01:51 PM
 Dang it Tulsa, SCORE! You can score, I know you can score, so SCORE.

Points, Tulsa. POINTS!

Do I need to point to where you should be headed for points?

You know, points that you SCORE?!

:D This is about what I would be saying if I ordered the PPV and was watching them.

EDIT: My message apparently got through ;)

bri

End of the first quarter:

Tulsa - 7
Arkansas - 17

They just showed a shot of the stadium, and there's a pretty good chunk of blue in the stands. Sweet. :D

:O Well, it probably closer for a lot of Tulsans than it is for Razorback fans to Fayetteville... especially in their mind during this crappy Ark season :D

bri
11/1/2008, 01:58 PM
Charles Davis just made a great play on a tipped ball to get a big interception for TU. 'Cane gets the ball at the Arkansas 44, pending review...

bri
11/1/2008, 02:01 PM
And the SEC replay officials bail out the Razorbacks by overturning the play. The 'Cane will get the ball anyway after a punt, but they'll still lose yardarge on the call.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:04 PM
After the punt, TU has the ball at their own 34. Arkansas gained about 22 yards on that replay reversal. F*ckers.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:07 PM
Tulsa has a nice drive going. The no-huddle is in rhythm and they've got a first down at the Arkie 25.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:08 PM
Hmmm...the refs are allowing the DB's to employ, shall we say, physical and early coverage on TU's receivers.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:10 PM
Tarrion Adams loses yards on a handoff, and then on 3rd and 17 Johnson throws incomplete into the end zone. Trae Johnson gets called for offensive pass interference and for some reason, Arkansas takes the penalty. 3rd down again.

Gandalf_The_Grey
11/1/2008, 02:12 PM
Bri, you just don't understand SEC strategy...it is too complicated for your Big XII and Tulsa brain..

bri
11/1/2008, 02:12 PM
Well, sh*t. 3rd and 32, Johnson flipped a shovel pass to Tarrion Adams who promptly fumbled after getting down to the Arkansas 20. Arkie dodges the bullet and gets the ball back with 11:26 left in the first half.

The breaks seem to all be going in Arkie's favor early.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:13 PM
HOLY SH*T, TULSA SACKED THE UNSTOPPABLE SEC QUARTERBACK!! ZOMG!!

bri
11/1/2008, 02:14 PM
ZOMG! THEY JUST SACKED HIM AGAIN!

Three-and-out for the Tulsa defense to try and take some of the momentum back. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 02:15 PM
Tulsa nearly blocks the punt, but instead will have the ball on their own 33 with 9:10 left in the second.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:21 PM
TOUCHDOWN TULSA!!

And then Paul Tracy misses the extra point to kill my buzz. 17-13 Arkansas with 8:09 left in the half.

badger
11/1/2008, 02:24 PM
For those of you just joining us, bri is a Tulsa fan.

:O

bri
11/1/2008, 02:25 PM
On 3rd and 6, Arkie goes back to the fullback on the drag route for a big gain, then he fumbles at the end only for it to roll out of bounds. Again, break for Arkansas.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:28 PM
Arkie gets a first down on a catch and run, then we tack on some yardage with a facemask. First and goal from the 6.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:28 PM
TU stuffs the SEC's leading rusher on first down for a loss, second and goal.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:29 PM
Arkie gets a couple of yards down to the five, third and goal.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:30 PM
Fade to the corner sails long, now it's fourth and goal and Arkie will try a field goal....good.

Tul - 13
Pig - 20

4:39 left in the second quarter.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:32 PM
Demetrius Johnson brings the ensuing kickoff back 80 yards! Tulsa has it at the Arkie 15, first down.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:33 PM
A.J. Whitmore runs it right up the gut from the Wildcat for a big gain down to the 4. First and goal!

badger
11/1/2008, 02:33 PM
kudos to the cane :)

ESPN Gamebreaking update: MSU vs. UW ends in 44 yd fg.... it is good for Sparty. MSU leads 25-24 with 7 seconds left. Badgers be doomed.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:35 PM
After two short runs by Courtney Tennial and David Johnson, Johnson hits Charles Clay for a touchdown. Extra point is good, and now we're tied at 20 with 3:08 left before halftime.

Tulsa gets the ball to start the second half, BTW. :D

Gandalf_The_Grey
11/1/2008, 02:35 PM
That must have been a mistype by Bri..no way an SEC teams give 80 yard KO return to Tulsa hahah

badger
11/1/2008, 02:35 PM
20-20! TU! L-S-A!

ESPN update: Sparty wins 25-24 on boneheaded kickoff return attempt by UW. I have relatives that are shouting obscenities 1000 miles north right about now

bri
11/1/2008, 02:37 PM
And once again, the Golden Hurricane kicking game kills my buzz with a screw-up, this time a kickoff out of bounds. Arkie ball from their own 40. Bah.

Gandalf_The_Grey
11/1/2008, 02:38 PM
You would kick it out of bounds to if you was playing an SEC school...hell OU might want to consider it against everyone ;)

bri
11/1/2008, 02:38 PM
Arkie just dropped a sure touchdown pass. Phew!

aurorasooner
11/1/2008, 02:40 PM
WitH would ABC have aggie vs Iowa State on and not the Pigs vs Tulsa? I guess this ISU/Aggie game could be a close game or an upset, but on paper it looks 'amn strange to have this game as an ABC regional telecast instead of Tulsa/ARkie.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:40 PM
D.J. Williams is pretty much everything Arkie has going right now.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:41 PM

ABC probably couldn't pick it up since Arkie is in the SEC and there's no doubt some arcane rule in CBS's contract that doesn't let them show it. Or something.

JLEW1818
11/1/2008, 02:42 PM
CBS is gay

bri
11/1/2008, 02:43 PM
Arkie has a 2nd and 1 at the Tulsa 5. TU calls their last timeout with 1:14 left. I say let 'em score on this play, then that way we'll have a minute left after the kickoff return...enough time to score twice. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 02:45 PM
TU gets a sack on an attempt at a play-action pass, second and goal from the 9.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:46 PM
TU almost gets another sack, but Dick manages to flop out and get down to the 5. Third and goal.

bri
11/1/2008, 02:48 PM
Incomplete pass! Fouth and goal, and Arkie lines up for another field goal attempt...good.

Tul - 20
Pig - 23

:17 left in the half. Plenty of time for Gus Malzahn. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 02:51 PM
Squib kick, and Tennial takes it back to the Tulsa 46. Johnson throws for the end zone, incomplete...and the Arkie timekeeper manages to bleed off the last second after the refs blew the play dead.

Mmmmmmmmm, home cookin'!

JLEW1818
11/1/2008, 02:52 PM
yep

bri
11/1/2008, 03:19 PM
2nd half kickoff by Arkie goes into the endzone. Think Petrino spent most of halftime yelling at the kicker?

Tulsa is on the move, first down at their own 30.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:20 PM
Johnson to Brendan Marrion for 40 yards, first down at the Arkie 25. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 03:23 PM
David Johnson is underthrowing the ball a little today.

Trickeration on third down gets intercepted, plus a facemask on the Arkie player that picked the pass off. Arkie ball at with 12:40 left in the third.

JLEW1818
11/1/2008, 03:24 PM
Tv?

bri
11/1/2008, 03:28 PM
ESPN Gameplan/ESPN360.

Tulsa holds and forces a punt, first down from their own 28.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:31 PM
Demarius Johnson just popped a run out to midfield off the zone read play with Whitmore in the Wildcat.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:32 PM
Johnson to Clay for a first down inside the Arkie 40. 1st and 10 at the 39.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:33 PM
Gah. Tulsa gets dinged for 12 men in the formation. 1st and 15 at the Arkie 44.

tommieharris91
11/1/2008, 03:34 PM
I'm guessing having 1 less day to prep for Arkie isn't helping them.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:34 PM
After a run for no gain, Johnson finds Slick Shelley on second down but Arkie breaks it up with a hard hit. Third down 13.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:36 PM
Johnson tried to hit Shelley again, and again it was broken up. They're going for it on fourth down...a yard short. Another awesome SEC mark gives Arkie the ball back.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:40 PM
They're reviewing the spot. The Arkie announcers had to amend the rule from "where the ball is when he steps out" to "oh, no, I mean where he steps out" once they realized the ball was at the first down marker when the TU player stepped out.

We're still gonna get f*cked on this call, though.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:42 PM
"After the review, Tulsa can go f*ck themselves. We're the SEC. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, DOGGIES!!!!!!"

Anger.

Arkie gets a 34 yard gain on first down, down to the Tulsa 35.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:43 PM
D.J. Williams makes another catch, comes out of the pile and pops a TU player in the face. SEC ref does nothing.

All. Some.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:43 PM
TU gets a sack. SEC ref marks it as a 9 yard loss instead of the 10 yards it was.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:46 PM
Pig announcer is now complaining about the spot after TU stuffs their back on 3rd down. Arkie goes for it on 4th down and doesn't get it. SEC ref tries, but can't scoot the spot up far enough.

Tulsa ball.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:47 PM
Tarrion Adams with a pair of runs to get Tulsa out past their 30. first down.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:48 PM
Johnson and Adams run a little option, gain to the 39. Second down.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 03:49 PM
I can't find the game on 360. Got a link?

bri
11/1/2008, 03:49 PM
Clay, Tennial, and Adams have all combined to move Tulsa across midfield. That's right, we're grinding it out on the ground. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 03:50 PM
http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/espn360/player

It's under the Live Now link.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 03:52 PM
that's weird. not listed for me. I can watch N Texas vs W Kentucky though. Yippee

bri
11/1/2008, 03:52 PM
Clay, Adams, and Tennial are cramming the ball down Arkie's throat. We get a high snap, though, and lose all the way back to the 15. Second and goal.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 03:53 PM
so what is the score/time left?

tommieharris91
11/1/2008, 03:53 PM
23-23 now.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:54 PM
that's weird. not listed for me. I can watch N Texas vs W Kentucky though. Yippee

Ya, they keep running a crawl saying that game will be available after this one. I assumed it was a local coverage thing.

Arkie forces a game-tying FG attempt from Tracy...good.

Tul - 23
Pig - 23

:36 left in the 3rd.

tommieharris91
11/1/2008, 03:56 PM
TD return themz.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:57 PM
Tulsa just pulled an Oklahoma on the ensuing kickoff. TD Arkansas. :(

Tul - 23
Pig - 30

:22 left in the 3rd.

bri
11/1/2008, 03:58 PM
Pig got called for excessive celebration, tho. 15 yards to be enforced on the ensuing ensuing kickoff. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 03:59 PM
The Pig announcers complaining about 'bad calls' going against them makes me want to climb into the Matrix and spin kick those c*cksuckers.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:00 PM
Tulsa returns the kick to their own 39. End of the third.

Tul - 30
Pig - 23

There could be just 15 minutes left for Tulsa's BCS hopes. :(

bri
11/1/2008, 04:03 PM
I stand corrected. They've put 11 seconds back up on the clock. Still the third quarter.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:04 PM
Tulsa pops a nice gain on an end around, but holding brings it back. 1st and 20 from the Tulsa 29 when we begin the fourth for reals.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:06 PM
Johnson gets sacked to start the fourth quarter for Tulsa. 2nd and 23.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:06 PM
sweet. got it on 360 now.

unsweet. first play I see is a sack

bri
11/1/2008, 04:08 PM
Johnson pressured, rolls out and has to throw it away. 3rd and long now.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:08 PM
stupid hawgs!!!!11!

bri
11/1/2008, 04:09 PM
INT, Tulsa. Gah.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:10 PM
Tulsa needs to hold Pig to a field goal at the most here, or else it could be over.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:12 PM
The hinky hands of the Arkie receivers are keeping TU in this game. Fourth down from the Arkie 40, punt time.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:13 PM
12:41 left in the fourth, Tulsa has the ball at their own 9.

All right, we're got them right where we want them. :D

bri
11/1/2008, 04:15 PM
A.J. Whitmore gets a few yards out of the Wildcat once again. Second and six.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:16 PM
Tarrion Adams gets it out to the 29 on a screen pass by Johnson. First down!

bri
11/1/2008, 04:16 PM
Tennial pops it out to the Tulsa 43 for another first down.

Gain of one on first down, second and 9.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:17 PM
Arkie's pressure forced Johnson to roll out and overthrow his man, third and 9.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:18 PM
Johnson to Johnson for a first down at the Arkie 42.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:18 PM
End around gains down to the 35. 2nd down.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:20 PM
Tulsa picks up the first, then Tennial gains a yard down to the 29. Double reverse on second down loses a sh*tload of yardage, tho. Third and a mile.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:20 PM
durnit!!!

bri
11/1/2008, 04:21 PM
F*CK! A.J. Whitmore was wide open at the 10, and Johnson overthrows him. Fourth down, and we're going for it on 4th and 21.

Timeout Tulsa.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:21 PM
4th and 21

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:24 PM
quick kick. terrible one too

like we couldnt tell that was coming...

bri
11/1/2008, 04:24 PM
And the worst quick kick ever gives Arkie the ball back at their 19. I hate this game.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:25 PM
These Pig announcers are horrible.

Gain of one on a first down run. Second and nine from the twenty.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:25 PM
Arkie gets a nice pass to pick up a first down and move it out to their 34.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:26 PM
Basically, Tulsa's defense is stuffing their run game but giving up everything through the air.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:26 PM
good thing TU wasted a timeout to set up that 'unexpected' quick kick

bri
11/1/2008, 04:27 PM
To wit: Long gain on a pass to a wide open Pig gets the ball down to the Tulsa 37.

Gandalf_The_Grey
11/1/2008, 04:27 PM
Sounds like OU but without the stuffing the run part ;)

bri
11/1/2008, 04:28 PM
Draw play gets down to the 25. 3rd down.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:29 PM
Arkie gets another first down through the air. 1st and 10 at the Tulsa 19.

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 04:29 PM
Well, hopefully Tulsa can win out and win C-USA with just this loss.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:30 PM
Under four minutes left. Tulsa needs to force a turnover here on 3rd down.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:31 PM
Well, hopefully Tulsa can win out and win C-USA with just this loss.

Hey, this ain't over yet.

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 04:32 PM
Hey, this ain't over yet.

True, but it's not looking good, especially if the pigs get a FG.

Then again, Tulsa could score quickly, get the onside, then score again. Not out of the question with their offense.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:33 PM
Exactly.

Or they could get an INT on this upcoming third down pass and use the momentum to tie this thing up and win it in overtime. Dear God, let that happen.

Grimey
11/1/2008, 04:34 PM
ok

bri
11/1/2008, 04:34 PM
F*CK YEAH! INTERCEPTION IN THE END ZONE!!

Pig does not add to the lead, Tulsa gets the ball at their 20 with 3:04 left.

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 04:34 PM
Hmm, I seem to have forgotten that Arkansas has Casey Dick for a QB and that he still sucks.

bri
11/1/2008, 04:40 PM
Incomplete on 4th down. Ball game.

I love Gus Malzahn. I think he's aweome, and this offense is exciting. But the simple fact of the matter is, we lost this game because every time, EVERY SINGLE TIME we had something going, we'd f*ck it up by getting fancy.

I feel sick right now. :(

silverwheels
11/1/2008, 04:41 PM
**** the SEC.

bri

I'm still dammed proud of this team. Falling behind 17-0, having every 50/50 call go against them, three turnovers, on the road, and they fight back and have a chance to tie it up at the end? This is the sort of game that Tulsa used to fold up the tents and lose big.

14-0 was a lofty goal, and I truly believed in my heart that this team could do it. This loss hurts, but you know what? 13-1 doesn't sound too bad either. GO 'CANE!

Your OC got fancy is right- Tulsa was the better team... First and Goal on the 2 and they are in shotgun - bad snap. BS call period they were gashing them with the run.

2nd and 2 and they run two wild cat plays back to back that don't work. Makes me want to puke on that Highschool hack...

Well, we wouldn't even be here if it weren't for that "highschool hack", so I'm not gonna give up on him entirely. But yeah, there was a lot of self-stoppage in that game for the 'Cane.

Not to sound like Kejuan Jones or anything, but if we'd have just kept running the ball (from our normal formation) on that last drive, we'd have tied it up. :D

Why did they pull Johnson from the game? Shoulda went with your QB there, not the Wildcat formation

They split him out to the left. I actually thought they might try some convoluted way to get the ball in his hands and let him throw it, which would have been just as stupid.

Meh.

:( we were all pulling for Tulsa. Lord knows the SEC gets enough kudos without doing shizzle every year.

I know we're all still smarting from the loss, but wanted to call attention to this so we can hate on ESPN more:

From the College Football main page:

They really need to stop outsourcing football headlines to India

Ar-Kansas is one of the worst teams in the SEC having won only once in conference.
