Excerpt from PollSpeak.com:
"I asked BCS Administrator Bill Hancock what they do to verify the data. He says, “The BCS does not compile the six computer rankings, nor the two ‘human polls.’ Those are compiled by outside entities that have given permission for them to be used by the BCS. We have been assured by each computer rankings provider and by the administrators of the Harris and Coaches Polls that they have thoroughly checked their work.”
So basically the BCS takes their word for it.

i don't see why the computer poll programs are not made public

what is to keep them from tweaking it week to week?

i think it's pretty shady to not make the votes public as well. i mean That Old Drunk and the Bowdens should have to explain why they voted OU so low last year, for example

Off-subject, but:

if I hear another BCS apologist spout that ridiculous "I like the fact that every game counts" line, I'm gonna kill someone.

To get into the top 8 or even the top 16, EVERY FRIGGIN GAME WOULD COUNT, YOU ****ING IDJITS !!1!

okay, sorry, carry on

Does the NFL use polls and excel macros to determine rankings?

only the Coaches Poll isn't available to the public on a week to week basis. If any of the early season computer polls aren't up on the individual site for each, it's because of an agreement with the BCS to not release them until the BCS rankings start. That's how you get these BCS "Experts" like Jerry Palm and Brad Edwards being able to be pretty close to what the week to week rankings will be, because they are able to view most if not all of the computer polls.

Harris Poll is another story, because they don't start voting until the week of the first BCS Rankings.

Let's look at this year.

With the BCS:
We lose to Texas and we are no longer in control of our own destiny. Even if we win out, there is no guarantee that we get to the MNC game. One game made all the difference.

With a 8 team playoff:
We lose to Texas but win out for the rest of the games and we are guaranteed a MNC spot. The loss to Texas didn't mean squat in the playoff scenario.

So yes, with a playoff not every game counts. And for teams in the NC hunt, every game counts.

We had to win the other games to be in this position... right? Undefeated or 1-loss teams had to earn it so I'm not sure what your point is with that. Try again?

Win enough games in a tough-enough schedule and you *may* be in the playoff. Every. Game. Matters.

He was referring to the actual program/formula that the computers use to determine the rankings, not the rankings themselves. If one does not know how the teams are ranked, who's to say they can't be "tweaked"?

Adding to the "every game counts" debate is that if the higher seeds get home field advantage until the finals or semi's. Then every game would count- would you rather play Florida at home or at the swamp?

Just think, how great would it be to see up to 3 extra big-time games in Norman every year at the end of the season?

But on second thought, I'd rather go to the name-the-corporate-sponsor Bowl every year that means nothing but bragging rights and a cheesy trophy. (Unless you are one of the two teams that play for the MNC)

exactly.

But even without a home-field component -- *if* you're a top-8 team and the voters/computers think you should stay in the top 8 *if* you lost a late-season game, so be it.

And tempting fate by taking a game off in a 12-game season -- within an opinion-based ranking system while vying for 8 spots -- would be retardo-stupid, but a simple seeding system would eliminate that inclination..

okay, sorry, carry onI understand your frustration. Some people will always prefer a beauty contest vote to decide who plays for the NC instead of the way it SHOULD besettled, which of course is on the field like highschool,D-3,D-2,D-1AA(ok FCS to be accurrate).

a lot of the computer rankings at least up to 3-4 years ago used to have their formula somewhat available. That was how some "specialists" were able to predict how the rankings would play out 1-3 weeks into the season. If they aren't available to the public anymore then there's probably a reason for it.

I don't see why we need so many polls. Just use one computer poll and publish the algorithm so that everyone knows what is expected of their favorite team. Whatever the computer decides is good enough for me.

Nitpicking. But there is no such thing as a computer poll. There are polls and there are computer rankings. I do like an average of several computer rankings though and it definitely shouldn't be a state secret how they are achieved.

I do think the computers get somewhat of a bum rap.
