Defenses that bend but don't break don't allow 35 points to UTEP or Kansas State.

but when you're hanging 70 points on somebody, does it matter that they hang 35 on you, especially when you've got your second stringers in?

Is there a better college football state in the union right now?

I guess texass has TCU, Uteri and TT. So, it's close but still pretty cool.

MichiganSooner

Probably in the middle somewhere. Remember how much trouble they gave us in 05. AD pulled out the game with a brilliant run of close to 50 yards. Paul Smith and his tightend from Jenks had a heckuva game.

Sunday Night CFB. I like it. Relegate yawner NFL and NFL prime ticket games from noon to 5 PM on Sundays and Monday nights only, then have Thur. Night, Saturday, and Sunday Night CFB. (leave Friday Night to the HSs). Anymore I'd rather watch a Tulsa/UCF matchup than a Giants/Steelers matchup, like was on late this afternoon, which was a pretty good game as far as the usual lame NFL games go.
Hmm. 1st quarter ends and Tulsa is only up 7-0. I'd better go over to the Tulsa board and see if their fans are calling for Malzahn's head.

I personally left because of many lame excuses that I care not to name here in fear of being called a wussy, ***** or... zussy??? Whatev. I left early and I'm a bad football fan for it, but I was there alone, so I acted on my own.

If I had to guess, the factors for leaving early included the wind (the punters are really not that bad, it was just plain windy there), the cold (not a good game to be half nekkid with body paint) and the timing (Sunday + night = leave early).

I stayed until the end. After we scored our last touchdown, I was yelling for us to go for 2. 49 points just kind of seem like a rip-off with Gus' offense. Still, since I don't think me managed to score a combined 49 points in two losses to UCF last season, I'm happy with the win.

And I didn't realize David Johnson had inherited the post-game fight song baton from Paul Smith. Celebrating is teh win.

Talking to guys that have attended all the games this year, it is now a TU tradition. At an away game, they didn't have the baton, so they used a drum stick. I will try to find the picture. I don't think it's just a QB thing, either, but an honor that the top player of the game gets.

I think it's kind of funny seeing a QB direct music, but it's also kind of cool. It's definitely a close knit campus there. Perhaps at a 50,000+ student campus this type of thing wouldn't happen.

bri

Nah, it's pretty much a QB thing. Paul used to do it after every game, so I guess David's keeping the tradition.

I really hope TU goes undefeated and has a chance a national stage, I really do, but if anything keeps TU from getting to that big ol' BCS bowl, whatever the bowl might be, it probably involves one of the following:

1- Bowl selection committees. Utah brought the entire state along to the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State brought the entire state of (Boise, haha, j/k) Idaho along for their Fiesta Bowl, Hawaii did about the same for the Sugar Bowl... but would Tulsa bring many fans along for a bowl game, or at least be able to convince a selection committee that they would?

2- BCS Buster competition. Somebody help me on the rules - Top 12, or Top 16 if you rank ahead of a BCS auto-bid conference champion, right? However, the rules appear to only allow ONE BCS Buster under that scenario, not multiple ones. Computers or not, there are two other undefeated BCS Busters ahead of Tulsa (BSU and Utah) and one BCS Buster that is ranked high (TCU). How will the rules dictate the BCS bid for the mid-major?

Both have nothing to do with computers, but everything to do with BCS selection.

Oh - and Tulsa's new stadium. It was my first trip to it since the renovation (last time was OU-TU last year) and I must say, it is quite amusing on the fourth floor where the only thing dividing expensive luxury suites, the replay booth, the radio and the coaches of both teams are glass panels. The UCF coaches were going nuts after the safety in the first half. I thought kiddos were running along the roof or something odd like that. Fans go nuts, but nobody goes nuts like coaches during games. With simple glass panels dividing all of these respective people, you could see everyone else on the same level and their reactions to everything.

I was impressed by TU last night, but I think they needed a little more. If not for that brutal stretch in the 2nd quarter they would've really blown UCF out. I went into the game thinking they needed a 60-10 score to turn some heads.

Yeah, I wanted more points too. Not because I felt we had to impress pollsters, 'cause the polls for this week had already come out and we have the big matchup with a "BCS team" before the next poll, but rather because I have an insatiable hunger for points. And cookies.

As far as "will we travel well?", I think we can make a good case for the fact that although we are the smallest D-1 school in the nation, our alumni base tends to have more disposable income than some other fanbases. We always show up in good numbers for the likes of the Liberty, GMAC, etc. I don't think that'll be an issue.

Like I clarified, it's not a question of IF you will travel well, because I know you guys have good crowds at away games and I talked to people yesterday that went to the GMAC Bowl and plan to go wherever Tulsa ends up this year - it's all about the perception of if you will travel to the same extent, as say, Utah or Boise, two teams that have already gone to BCS Bowls and proved that they will bring a crowd to a big game.

This same mentality of "little schools don't travel well" kept highly ranked KSU teams out of BCS bowls in the past.

Also another problem: 10 schools make BCS bowls. Six spots are already guaranteed to non-BCS teams. There are only four golden tickets left to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, Charlie.

I remember there being a large TU contingent in Austin when the Hurricane gagged away a sure Final Four bid against the Tar Heels in 2000. One of my more disappointing non-OU losses, for sure. I'd think that TU could send 15,000 to a bowl game considering it would be the biggest thing to ever happen to the school. SWA's Tulsa hub would surely be busy.

Got to drum Arkansas. Can't just beat them. Got to go over there and beat the snot out of them.

People will travel, no matter the size of the school. George Mason brought a lot of people to Indianapolis for the Final Four in 2006. It can be done. As a matter of fact, the worst traveling fanbase I can recall for the Final Fours I've watched over the last 20 years was ours from 2002. We were dwarfed in the Georgia Dome.

I would normally hold my tongue in fear of getting laughed out of the message board for the argument of "We had a divided fanbase because we also went to San Antonio's women's Final Four that year," but considering that our women's crowds at home are larger than men's crowds (or at least it sure looks that way upon recent attendance to games), perhaps I won't get laughed and pointed at to death for suggesting that it might have factored in just a little.

Well, in our defense, it's not like it was football. :D

And yes, I realize that I'm using the royal "we" to refer to two different teams. I trust that most of you can keep up, tho.

Yeah, I didn't see Cap'n Cane or Tulsa Man last night. Luckily, an upswing in goofy costumed students made up for it.

That kid in the white hoodie was beating the f*ckhell out of that dummy. Seriously, there was so much barely suppressed rage present that I wanted to find his mom and be all "hug him more, before he kills us all".

What does the "TTH" on the front of the helmets mean? I was trying to figure it out last night. I thought the last part might mean "Tulsa Hurricane," or maybe the whole thing means "To The House," since they score so much.

Did you know they struggled last night against UCF?

They indeed won....

But seriously a BCS bid?

I think not.

And yet we're clamoring for OU to back into the title game after giving up over 500 yards of offense against K-State?

Yeah, that's fair.

It's why CBS pays a kajillion dollars to broadcast the NCAA Tournament. Everybody has a shot, and any one team can shock the other on any given day. It's why people know about George Mason and Gonzaga. It would be awesome to behold in college football, and I can't imagine the dollars that would make their way to the world in the TV contract. It would be astounding.

The current system isn't fair, and it needs to be changed. Will it ever happen? Someday.

*Using my best southern accent*

Sir, with all due respect I find your argument about such folk to be irresponsible and disparaging.
However more to the point, you may find that may happen very soon due to the fact that such elder gentlemen who reside on the Pac10/Big 10/11 date back to before Lincoln was in office.

So your point is well taken, they only have so much time left to make the lives of our nations youth...miserable. :D

I just want to add that cold/flu meds are the **** btw...heh! WOOOOOOO!

I'd be content to see Penn State make it so JoPa could retire before he keels over on the sideline. He already crapped his britches last year.

bri

Meh, I don't know. "Dead on the sideline" is a much more stirring story than "gets blown out by Texas, retires". :D

I mean, it's not "Tulsa returns to Orange Bowl after 64 years" stirring, but it's still alright.

As a TU grad (BA 1966) an a OU grad (MBA 1969) I enjoy watching both teams. TU is improving and would finish in the top half of the Big XII North but would compete with Baylor for the cellar of the Big XII South. Hey, but with that they still would be a Top 20 team!

Compete with BU? TU has chunks bigger than Baylor in its poop. It could also whip aTm and would give TT and OUr Sooners a run for its money.

TU definitely tops the BCS of player names. Slick Shelley is the coolest name in college football this year. He's the second TU player to have won the award. He was preceded by Sherman Steptoe a few years back.
