View Full Version : I Need Some Good Thoughts and Good Vibes From MY S.O. Friends

Was talking to my son-in-law last night - he's been my son-in-law for a little less than a year now. He's made the decision to join the US Army, and will find out Wednesday when and where he is supposed to report.

I talked to my daughter on the way home form work a little while ago, and she is excited for this as a future for them, in spite of the distance between them early on. She makes pretty good money for someone her age (22), but with her hubby gone she's going to be pretty much by herself - with some friends and extended family, in South Florida. But, she's been there for 4 1/2 years when she came to live with us, so she knows what the dealio is, and she sounds prepared for what's ahead.

The recruiter told him it's "50-50" as to whether he goes to Iraq or Afghanistan. In reality, and they both know this, it's more like 100% possibility with all the extended tours ready to come home.

I'm praying for his safety and well being. I'm also immensely proud of him in the fact he wants to serve his country.

He'll be fine. Heck, despite the doom and gloom propogated by the left for political purposes, things are going pretty good in both AOR's. The odds of getting killed or hurt vary by MOS of course, but if he isn't an infantry door-kicker type d00d (God bless 'em), the odds are about the same we all face of dying in a car wreck.

Now, it must be stated however, WTF the Army? Did he not graduate from high school or something?

Good luck to him. If he ends up getting stationed up here, let me know and I'll schlep him a beer or nine.

sorry to my green-clad brethren I offended. I forgot the winkies. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :D ;) :D ;) :( <sheesh>

I LOVE the flippin' Army. Thank the Lord there for 'em and the fact they have guys who love to get dirty and sleep in the mud. Srsly! My snappy retort (which fell flat) was merely a bit of inter-service banter grounded in the fact the more tech-intensive services (USAF, USN) won't sign a kid who lacks a HS diploma or GED.

Good luck to him and your daughter. They sound like well-grounded, brave individuals.

I admire them for their courage. I don't know that I could do what they are doing.

Thanks to all you for your kind words and support. Mrs. VJ and I are planning on going to Fla. for Thanksgiving and if he hasn't left by then, I'd be honored to hand him a screen print of this thread.

Homey- he finished HS. I didn't ask him "Why Army?" but I don't think Gen. Tommy Franks ever had any regrets. Just the fact he's going to serve us - as did many of you here - makes me very proud.

No question. I'm just an AF homer and partial. That, and we don't have any jobs that don't have civilian equivalents for life after the service...well, except for EOD.;)

C'mon guys, we should all be aware by now that if ANYONE is going to actually run down someone's military service around here it's not going to be Homey.
