The Huckabee thread got me thinking.

How about this for a contest:

Republican
Mike Hucakbee - P
Sarah Palin - VP

New Party (whatever you wanna call it)
John McCain - P
Joe Lieberman - VP

Democrat
Barack Obama - P
Hillary Clinton - VP

Give the far right to Huckabee, Palin, Hannity & Rush

Give the middle to McCain, Lieberman & maybe Boortz?

Give the left to Obama & Clinton.

Who wins and why?

If you don't like my suggestions for locales, please create your own.

There's a reason we don't have more than two major parties in the US, and you just pointed it out. That set up leads to a permanent Democratic majority, since there aren't enough independents that would shift away from Obama in that circumstance to give either of the other parties a plurality (Democratic base is typically about 35 to 40% of the US population). The more right leaning political figures would inevitably combine the parties again because of this, even though they wouldn't be as happy with the candidates as they could be.

As long as all American political competitions are head-to-head and not proportional, we will inevitably seek a two-party equilibrium.

The only thing that the Huckabee thread got me thinking was that some people shouldn't call me names.

With the demographics in America they way they are currently and they way they are trending, will the Republican party platform in its current state be able to remain viable 8 to 10 years from now?

As the country moves toward ever more nanny-statism and its inhabitants are suckered into thinking that expanding socialism is the way to go, I think the answer to your question is probably no. The real question is how has this great country come to this?

Has the Republican party reflected true conservatism of late?

Has the Republican party reflected true conservatism of late? The primary election is compromised, where liberals of various party affiliations are allowed to vote in the republican primary. McCain even thanked "democrats" for helping to get him the republican nomination.

No. And probably not since they backed down from Clinton in the government shut-down thingy over the budget back in 1995.

We found out back then that you can't even cut the rate of growth in some programs without being accused of denying school lunches for starving chilren' (Joycelen Elders impersonation).

Has the Republican party reflected true conservatism of late?

Of course not. They're too busy falling all over themselves to out-liberal the Democrats because they think it will help get them elected. Politicians think people want handouts and the government to take care of them. Sadly, I think they may be right. :(

Republican Party gives the Democratic Party a run for their money, but the split of the ultra-crazy Christian jihadists ultimately tilts the election to the Donkeys.
