While poor kickoff coverage and mediocre punting has justifiably received much attention...I had another thought, question really, while seated at the cotton bowl.

How often has OU blocked a field goal attempt in the last, say, four years? I have trouble remembering any.

The year we won the MNC, our defense scored and special teams made huge plays.

Little things that make a huge difference!

2008 NCAA Rank KO return Defense #109--Oklahoma

Jonathan Hayes
Prior to joining the Bengals, Hayes spent four years (1999-2002) at the University of Oklahoma as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. He helped the Sooners to a four-year record of 44-9, including a 13-0 mark in 2000 for the NCAA championship.

Under Hayes's tutelage, tight end Trent Smith finished his Oklahoma career in 2002 as the school's No. 2 all-time receiver, with 148 catches. Also in 2002, Sooners special teams blocked seven kicks (three FGs, four punts), and punt returner Antonio Perkins returned three punts for touchdowns. Hayes's kick coverage teams allowed only 6.6 yards per punt return and 17.8 yards per kickoff return. .

Since Hayes left, we have been bad at special teams as a whole...Stoops needs to hire a good coach this offseason

Off topic, but who is coaching the special teams this year?
In years past, BOB has coached the special teams.

Seriously???

Well, soonersports.com says it is "Chris Wilson", but I am convinced it has to be Kevin Wilson if things are this bad. Plus several people on this board said it was Kevin, so I unknowingly went with that. It just sounded right.

We blocked a FG against WVU, blocked a punt against Missouri in Columbia a few years ago and have had a number of great special teams moments in recent years.

Fire the ST coach? Hire a new one?

Why don't we just get great players to make great plays again? You know... like Garett Hartley, Allen Patrick, Jacob Gutierrez, Lewis Baker, Joe Jon Finley... sh!t on those guys all you want to, but they were big-time contributors the last few years. We have rolled out a lot of young guys, particularly two new punt returners, a sophomore slump for the Murray/Iglesias tandem and there's no reason yet to red flag a FG kicker who is 1/1 on the season. NTM, all those guys like AP and Baker were great at coverage and tackling. It's going to take some time to get everyone on the same page... much like the defense in 2006. Eventually it's going to click. All it takes on special teams is one n00b to miss a block, muff a punt or slip and fall and it could spell an entire game. Unfortunately it's happened a lot for us so far.
