Staff the offices with someone that would actually care?

What a novel idea. :)

...but for real: Why not do this?

Trap or no trap, it's still a sh*tty deal.

Am I the only one that looks at the assfest that's the VA, hears cries for universal healthcare, and makes the connection that universal healthcare = assfest with the common connecting issue being that the government is in charge?

You sure about that? Tell ya what, do a little reading and you'll likely realize that for the past many years VA has outperformed private sector healthcare in preventive medicine, performance, quality, cost (yup cost), and outcomes. This ain't your Dad's Buick TF.

I have good insurance and can go pretty much where I want. I choose to go to the local VA. Yep, I work there too - full disclosure. I am an informed consumer as far as healthcare goes and prefer VA by a mile.

My problem is more with the privatization and profiteering by the big dogs in VA.

Like the past Secretary and current Secretary of the Dept. contracting out exams to their own company. (http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/11/20/va_contracts)

Unfortunately, it threatens all the wrong people and interest groups for VA healthcare to do this well.

Vet's been on the prowl for the one-star bandit for awhile now. Glad he got the mystery figured out.

They could also staff people who speak English.

My father died at the VA Hospital in OKC and the doctor barely spoke a lick of English. I was only 20 at the time but I just remembered thinking "this is how we treat our military and military families."

There ya go.

I have a VA clinic in my first-in run district. And yeah, we run there. Fairly often. And while the lines are short and the staff friendly, in patients I've had the honor to tend to, I've noticed a disturbing trend of simply throwing medications at a problem without apparent considerations of an ever growing list and the potential contraindications of medications they're prescribing.

Joe Veteran doesn't know this stuff. He sees his doctor, gets checked out, and moves on down the road.

But multiple times from multiple sources, some of those sources being firsthand emergency patient care, the charge nurse whips out a list of meds that damn near rolls out like toilet paper. My neighbor, my grandpa, and another friend of the family have in recent days been thankfully caught by their pharmacist before filling out a prescription with a gigantic red flag of death from incompatible meds.

No bueno.

I don't think that problem is confined to VA hospitals.

Polypharmacy is a huge problem throughout the "industry" of healthcare.
VA is as guilty as any.

And, granted, VA doesn't always attract the best and brightest. But lately, thanks to a boatload of overhead costs and red tape, more good docs are coming to VA from private practice. Seems that working for a salary suits some better than running their own business these days. Again, it seems mostly to do with regulations and malpractice insurance costs.
