I see many posters referring to the "Red River Rivalry"...

Come on guys... It's the Red River War... Red River Shootout... anything but Red River Rivalry. That's too many R's strung together.

I concur, but I'll always call it OU texas. I don't think it really had a name when I was a noob fan.

I remember "rivalry" before "war"(?) or "shootout"(Dr. Pepper). But it's just "OU/texas".

Really? I don't recall that coming out until around 2005 or so. War was only around for a short time, but shootout seemed to have some legs. I guess you're right, it just comes down to the sponsors gimmick.

I just seem to remember "rivalry" going back to the '80's, but I could be mistaken. It's become too commercialized.

This was an article in an Austin paper after the first OU/texas game. Greatness!!!!!

The first meeting between Texas and Oklahoma's football teams occurred in 1900, before either team had acquired their current nickname (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickname). At that time, the Texas team was typically called "Varsity". The write-up in the Austin American-Statesman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_American-Statesman) article referred to the game as a "practice game".[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Shootout#cite_note-1900-AAS-16) The paper reported:
The game of football yesterday afternoon at the Varsity athletic field was an interesting contrast, notwithstanding the rather one-sided score of 28–2 in favor of the Varsity.

The Oklahoma men played a very good game, but they had weak points and the Varsity men found this out, and proceeded to take advantage of them. For instance, the visitors' tackles and ends were weak, and the Varsity men made most of their gains through these men. Their guards and center, though, were stiff enough, and the Varsity's attack at these points never netted large gains, and were frequently futile.

While Oklahoma should be given credit for the stiffness of her center trio, the fact that the Varsity backs made but small headway at these points is partly due to the Varsity backs themselves. They had not the life and dash that is necessary to successful line plunging, and they failed to heed Coach Thompson's oft repeated admonition to hit the line low and with speed, and the consequence was that when they got to the line they did not have the necessary momentum to plunge on through.
This was the case, notwithstanding the fact that the men are coached to play
a good distance behind the line, so that they can get up speed by the time they
reach it.

Hilarious.

I heard that Stoops said something similar about this week's game. He said:
Varsity's novel running back Ogbonnaya showed promise but our considered opinion holds that he does not posses the life and dash that is necessary to successful line plunging

It is "OU-texas"

They call it Red River Rivalry only in the Gayman Islands.

I think it was always "OU-Texas" up north, and "Texas-OU" down south.

I don't think it ever had another name until we decided to get a corporate sponsor for the game -- and then it had to have a corporate name.

Of the various corporate names--shootout seems to be the best and the by far the most popular. But I guess they are afraid that anti-gun ownership leftists would protest or something, and that was the beginning of "rivalry."

From 2000-2004, it was known as the Red River Blowout.
