Love that plane too. So many innovative things:

Just enough gas to take off, then immediately refueled.

Fuel tanks sealed at altitude, until then, it dumped fuel all over the runway.

Had to wait on taxiway after landing because airframe was too hot to touch.

"One Blip Aircraft" So fast, the Soviet radar operators supposedly only saw one blip on their screens before it was gone.

Beale AFB near Sacramento was their home. There are some statics there that I love to see when I watch the equally cool and mysterious U-2's takeoff and land.

SR-71 Blackbird is being used in the new Transformers movie.

I kind of like the F-22 Raptor, which was Starscream in Transformers.

I'm not positive, but are those both Army or are they Air Force.

Also like the Warthog. Love hearing that scream as they go by.

No, I don't know my military vehicles because of Transformers, but I loved that Transformers had so much cooperation with the US Army/Military on using these machines on screen. Transformers was also the first time that the Osprey was shown on screen.

If anyone's ever in Ohio, go to Dayton, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. My grandpa used to work on one of hte planes that is in the Air Force Museum there during WWII. He flew generals back and forth from the U.S. to Europe during the war. The Museum is the awesome. They have a WWII era display (which encompasses an entire hangar), Cold War, Vietnam stuff, early Wright Brothers type planes, they have a B-2 (I believe). It's interesting and fascinating to see these things up close. They also have a hangar with 7 different Air Force Ones that you can walk through. But that's on the active part of the base. We had to take a bus and told to not take pictures. People laughed, kind of assuming why, but the tour guide lady said, "seriously do not take pictures, they will stop the bus, take you off of it, and nobody will see you for quite awhile". My camera was never removed from the case.

Any time you can take the time out of your busy day, especially if you have children, take them to a military museum and show them/see the history of our military. I think it should be taught in school as a seperate subject. Just My Opinion.

If Hitler had the sense to put this bird in a fighter/interceptor role instead of dropping 500 pounders on Great Britain, I'm afraid the mighty Mustang and the rest of the Allied Air Corps would have seen it's match (and better) as early as 1939. A possibly VERY different outcome when you let hindsight's 20/20 vision focus on the situation.

Being the huge WWII buff that I am, and trying to recall strictly from memory here...the ME-262 was never used to drop bombs on Britain. Ever. They used them in a limited interceptor role toward the end of the war (late 44-45) against allied Bombers, but they were never deployed in sufficient numbers to make much of a difference. I forget Hitler's reasoning, but he was late in accepting large-scale production of jet aircraft.

Yes, there's that...

This thread is pretty cool, but I've never understood the fascination with aircraft. I know young kids love airplanes and all of that, but I was never one of those kids. What I always LOVED (and still do to this day) are tanks. I think tanks are SOOO much cooler than planes. There was a time when I could identify almost every tank made from WWI-current and identify the country of origin. I'm not as salty as I once was, but I can still hold my own. :D

Hitler wanted the jet used as a tactical bomber, which delayed development for quiet some time (I don't know how long). By the time his generals convinced him that it should be used solely as a fighter and to get the airplane flying, it was too late to make a difference.

She's not sexy like some of the other planes in this thread but for what she was, the Douglas C-47 'Goony Bird' was the best. Served in WW II, hauling cargo and personnel, dropped paratroopers, towed gliders. Many were used the Berlin Airlift. In Vietnam, the AC-47 was known as 'Puff the Magic Dragon'... it was armed with three GE miniguns firing from the port side and could lay down an absolutely withering amount of fire.

I heard somewhere that their major drawback was they were leaky, and you'd get drenched if they flew through a rainstorm. :D

the germans were slow to develop new technology because they thought the war would be over by late 1941,then came the battle of britain, had they been aggressive developing the me262, it would have come to production at least a year earlier- which is not a good thought- personally I dont like sour kraut. =)

One of the few aircraft shown so far in this thread I have never seen in person...and yet, one of my favorites:

Navy aircraft are functional, but ugly. The F-14 isn't pretty. It's pretty ****ing ugly. The F-18? Please. It couldn't hold a candle to the F-16. The only Navy planes I like are airframes that they shared with the USAF. The F-4, the A-7, etc.

My favorites - and all planes I've seen flying during my life:

1. P-51 Mustang
2. F-15 Eagle
3. F-4C Phantom
4. B-58 Hustler
5. F-102 Starfighter
6. SR-71 Blackbird
7. A-10 Warthog
8. F-105 Thunderchief

And there's a couple more planes that are not pretty, but are my all-time personal faves being a paratrooper, and I have jumps from all of them:

1. C-130 Hercules
2. C-141 Starlifter
3. C-123 Provider
4. C-7A Caribou
5. UH-1 Iroquois (Huey)
6. CH-47 Chinook
7. C-119 Flying Boxcar (I actually hated this plane to jump from)

Have to concur with all of those, especially the F-4. I was lucky enough to see the VX-4 Black Bunny at Pt. Magu. I couldn't find a real pic of this plane, but there is an F-4 and an F-14 painted in this livery.

Dean, great list. I have seen every one of those as well, 'cept for the afformentioned Hustler, never jumped from any of them and would respectfully add a number 8 to your list:

Behold, the beauty that was, the C-124 Old Shakey:

That's cause Marines fly it. They need to be on the ground, up to their knees in mud and blood, not trying to do Air Force business.

BTW...the damn thing is flying missions in Iraq and performing quite well.
