Sam’s Point of View

We're in the living room of a modest two bedroom house in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in the year 1992.
BUTCH'S MOTHER, 35ish, stands in the doorway leading into the
living room. Next to her is a man dressed in the uniform of
an American Air Force officer. The CAMERA is the perspective
of a five-year old boy(Sam Bradford).

MOTHER
Sam, stop watching game film a second.
We got a special visitor. Now do
you remember when I told you your
Pop Warner coach died in a NCAA training camp?

Sam (off screen)
Uh-huh.

MOTHER
Well this here is Capt. Boz. He
was in the NCAA camp with your coach.

CAPT. Boz steps inside the room toward the little boy and
bends down on one knee to bring him even with the boy's
eyeline. When the Boz speaks, he speaks with a slight Oklahoma
accent.

CAPT. BOZ
Hello, little man. Boy I sure
heard a bunch about you. See, I
was a good friend of your Coach's.
We were in that Seattle pit of hell
over five years together.
Hopefully, you'll never have to
experience this yourself, but when
two men are in a situation like me
and your Coach were, for as long as
we were, you take on certain
responsibilities of the other. If
it had been me who had not made it,
Major Coolidge would be talkin'
right now to my nephews Kyle and Korey. But the
way it worked out is I'm talkin' to
you, Sammy. I got somethin' for
ya.

The Captain pulls a Golden Hat out of his bag.

CAPT. BOZ
This hat I got here was first
won by your coach's great-granddaddy.
It was bought during his first football season
in a little football stadium
in Dallas, Texas. It was won by Sooner
Quarterback Ernie Coolidge the 1st weekend of
October 1938. It was your coach’s great-
granddaddy's Golden Hat, made by the
first company to ever make Golden Hats
You see, up until then,
people just wore regular hats.
Your coach’s great-granddaddy wore that hat
everyday he was in college at OU.
Then when he had done his duty, he
went home to his wife, took the hat off his
head and put it in an ol’gym bag.
And in that bag it stayed
'til your coach’s grandfather Dane Coolidge
was called upon by his college to
go south and fight the Texans
once again. This time they called
it Red River Rivalry.
Your coach’s great-granddaddy gave it to
his son for good luck.
Unfortunately, Dane's luck wasn't
as good as his old man's. Your coaches
granddad was a linebacker and he was
killed with all the other linebackers
in the battle of the NCAA. Your coach’s
granddad was facing the death penalty and he
knew it. So three days before the Sooners took
the field, your coach’s 22-year old
grandfather asked a Pride Member on an
Air transport named Winocki,
a man he had never met before in
his life, to deliver to his infant
son, who he had never seen in the
flesh, his Golden Hat. Three days
later, your coach’s grandfather was dead.
But Winocki kept his word. After
the war was over, he paid a visit
to your coach‘s wife, delivering to
your infant coach, his Dad's Golden
hat. This hat. This hat was
on your coach's head when he was
shot down over Dallas. He was
captured and put in a NCAA
prison camp. Now he knew if the
Longhorns ever saw the hat it'd be
confiscated. The way your coach
looked at it, you were the next in line for this hat.
And he'd be damned if any horned bastards were
gonna put their greasy orange hands on his prodigies
trophy. So he hid it in theone place he knew he could hide
somethin'. His ***. Five long years, he wore this
golden hat up his ***. Then when he died of
dysentery, he gave me the hat. I hid with uncomfortable
hunk of metal up my *** for two years.
Then, after seven years, I was sent
home to my family. And now, little
man, I give the hat to you.

Capt. BOZ begins to put the hat on Sam‘s head. A little hand comes into FRAME to accept it.

CUT TO: Inside the locker room of the Cotton Bowl.

The 20-year old Sam Bradford is dressed in Crimson & Cream:
pads, cleats and jersey. He lies on a table catching a few
zzzzzz's before his big game. Almost as soon as WE CUT to
him, he wakes up with a start. Shaken by the bizarre memory,
he wipes his sweaty face with his hand.

His Position Coach Josh Heupel, an older fireplug, opens the door a little, sticking his head in the room. Pandemonium seems to be breaking out behind Coach Heupel in the hallway.

Coach Heupel
It's time, Sammy.

Sam
I'm ready.

Heupel steps inside, closing the door on the WILD MOB
outside. He goes to the Crimson helmet hanging on a hook.
Sam hops off the table and, without a word, Heupel helps
him on with the helmet, which says on the back: "SOONERS"

The two men head for the door. Heupel opens the door for
Sam. As Sam steps into the hallway, the Crowd goes
ape****. Heupel closes the door behind him, leaving us in
the quiet, empty locker room.

FADE TO BLACK

TITLE CARD:

"THE GOLDEN HAT"

WE HEAR OVER THE BLACK AND TITLE:

Brent Musburger (off screen)
-- well Lee, that had to be the
bloodiest and, hands-down, the most
brutal game this city has ever
seen.

The SOUND of chaos in the back ground!
