Weekend football over. OU beats Baylor yet again and I need whisky and some cigarettes, so I go shopping and take my camera.

BigC is like Wal-Mart, I think. It is less than a five-minute walk but I’m thinking my bike would make it a bit quicker.

But parking is sometimes a problem because some families, well, they take up all the good parking spots

Lottery guy asleep or I would have bought a ticket. I probably already used up all my luck anyhow.

I love the fruits.

Dried Chinese mushrooms. Soak in water and then stir fry with veggies, rice, noodles. I’m into the shrooms.

Ice cold fishes – get your ice cold fishes!

Eggs and 1,000 year-old eggs. Wasn’t that a Survivor China gag challenge thing? I love them, but I’m just not certain how fresh they stay after the 1,000 years expiry date.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/eggsand1000yearoldeggs.jpg

The selection of rice is dizzying.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/riceselection.jpg

And, there is another whole row dedicated to rice cookers. I don’t think Americans even know how to properly cook rice. I don’t either without my deluxe model rice cooker.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/ricecookerselection.jpg

I don’t think even Wal-Mart has this wide selection of bicycles.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/bicycleselection.jpg

But, I’m completely thwarted. Nationwide alcohol sales are banned between lunch and 5pm. This is the whiskey and wine selection but they rope it off during the banned period.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/whiskyandwineselection.jpg

Since they don’t sell cigarettes and they don’t sell alcohol when I was there, I just wasted your time and my time.

I did get Marlboro menthol lights at the local 7-Eleven.

http://img5.ranchoweb.com/images/kanunu/7eleven.jpg

And, I did get my whiskey at the local mom-and-pop shop that has no problem breaking the curfew on alcohol sales.

Alright, mission accomplished.

So what are the pink eggs?

Chuck Bao

The pink eggs are the 1,000 year old eggs. In the pic you can see one sliced.

It's black.

The normal looking ones are normal eggs.

The pink eggs are the 1,000 year old eggs. I got tons of old stuff in my fridge, but not that old.

I'm surprised to see so much English on all the signs.
That's it, I'm visiting the Orient.

I don't have anything in my fridge that old, but I do have some black stuff. Not sure if it is meat or cheese. :D

I think Wikipedia calls them century eggs.

After the process is completed, the yolk becomes a dark green, cream-like substance with a strong odor of sulfur and ammonia, while the white becomes a dark brown, transparent jelly with little flavor or taste.I'm just not seeing the appeal here.

Although slightly poisonous, lead oxide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_oxide) is also known to increase the curing speed of century eggs and is thus added to the curing mixture by some century egg producers in China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China), which is the world's largest producer of century eggs. why am I not surprised?

and yeah...i think i'll pass on those. gah.

cool pics Chuck.

Now you didn't have to point out about the lead oxide part.

But, what do I care, I'm buying them and the cigarettes and the whiskey.

Seriously, I got accustomed to eating them as they are typically served in a bowl of rice gruel. Or, in a Chinese banquet they are served as cold appetizer with jelly fish and drunken chicken.

I had one last night over a bowl of noodles and ham.

It tastes like it looks - green eggs.

At least there are gyms and American fast food joints over there. Otherwise, I'd never even be able to harbor the dream of a visit...

I wonder what steak goes for in a country of fish?

Drunken chicken?

I would love some drunken chicken with a side of jelly fish. But, given current stock market conditions, I bet that it will be a very long time before I can afford to take my office colleagues out for a Chinese banquet lunch.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drunken_chicken

In Chinese cuisine there are many different ways of cooking drunken chicken.

One nationally known and very popular version, Shaoxing, originated in the Zhejiang province of eastern China.[1] Shaoxing drunk chicken is cooked and marinated exclusively in historic Shaoxing wine to create a deep taste.[1]

In another version of the dish, the whole chicken is first steamed then chopped up into pieces appropriately sized for picking up by chopsticks. The steamed meat, along with its juice, is cooked with scallions, ginger and salt. After the chicken is cooked it is marinated in Chinese liquor, sherry or hard liquor, like whiskey, overnight in the refrigerator. The chicken is served chilled, often as an appetizer. Besides the liquor-flavored meat, another feature of the dish is the liquor-flavored gelatin that results from the chilled mixture of the alcohol and the cooking juices.

The hillbilly version sounds good too, but I've never tried it.

A western version (also known as beer can chicken or chicken on a throne) is made by standing a prepared chicken upright on a partially filled can of beer and cooking it slowly in a barbecue or oven. The can goes into the opening of the chicken so that the beer evaporates and permeates the cooking chicken. It received its name due to way the chicken wobbles once the beer has evaporated and due to the fact the chicken is flavored with evaporated beer. The wobbling and falling usually indicates the chicken is done.

Another related recipe is bourbon chicken, which is prepared from bourbon whiskey.

So no tie in to the Susan G. Komen Foundation? ;)

They're a great organization. But they're also responsible for a preponderance of pink. So naturally...

Would someone go to a Super Wal-Marts here and take some pics?
