Do you Sooner faithful see this year's offensive squad as the best in the country and/or the best the Sooner's have ever fielded?

Looks like there aren't any weaknesses, unless you consider Bradford's mobility one.

I don't know about "best ever", but it's very, very good! It'll be tough to say it's the "best" when you consider the 7 offenses that won National Championships. If that happens this year, then it'll be up for debate.

It's certainly better than anything Texas has had. :D :P

Bradford, who runs a 4.5 40 is sandbaggin' his running skillz until the texas game.

Way too early to make an all-time OU comparison.Having said that I will say all the ingredients are there: great qb,excellent recievers, great te,dangerous rbs and a solid, powerful O-line.Ask again after the KU game,by that point we should really know what this O can do.

Personally I think we're becoming the prototype for future offenses. The OU offense can run it at you whenever we want, and spread you out and tear up your defense that way...all in the same possession without changing personnel.

While other teams are running the spread and calling themselves revolutionary (Penn State with their stupid Spread HD, Auburn, MU), we're taking it to a new level. Whether that makes this year's OU offense the best offense ever, we won't know until the end of the season. But I think OU is re-inventing offense for the next generation of offenses.

he's had some pretty good runs, but doesn't need to run in our offense. he's not The Trophy or anything

ifyou put AD behind this line - we might be saying best ever, but way too early to be crowning their asses. If you wanna crown them - crown them.

Its a little early in the Season to be talking best ever...This years squad is probably one of the more efficient squads we have fielded in a while...

Just in the Stoops era - Jason White's 2003 team averaged most points per game with 43.

1974 also averaged 43 per game.

Bennie Owen's 1916 team also averaged 43 per game, but finished 6-5

2007 and 1986 averaged 42 per game.

1971, under Chuck Fairbanks. 45 points per game.

WINNER: 1956, under Bud Wilkinson. 47 points per game.

I'd say some of OUr Offenses that hung 60+ on the little orange cows a couple years back were rather potent.

That is awesome, especially considering the era. You guys rocked TCU. Sounds like this offense could be making a case for true greatness.

Look at the 71 offense.. couldn't pass but didn't need to.. I still consider the wishbone offenses as some of the very best.. Look in the record books.. I shouldn't have said COULDn'T pass because we did when we needed to..

Now that we are 10 games into the season I can give a reasoned and fact-based response to this question.Yes we are the best offense in the country(lowest point total of any gamr-35,second to only TU in scoring and we have MUCH tougher competition) and yes this is the best offense in OU history. We are averaging 51.4 PPG which is tops in OU history.

We are averaging 355.5 YPG passing and 198.1 rushing, which shows a balance that neither Wilkinson or Switzer could ever boast. In addition the quick strike capability of this offense is more lethal than cyanide.

Here is a stat for you. 51 points a game average and FOUR TIMES we did not even score in the 4th quarter...cause we basically were trying not to.

In fact, only double digits in the fourth quarter against Cincy at 10...7 points four times, 3 points once and no points four times in the fourth quarter. Except for the Texas game, we really haven't had to try too much in the fourth...yet still average 51. Amazing. Only averaging 4 points a game in the 4th quarter.

I'll still take the wizardry of Jack Mildren and the '71 Wishbone.

What do I win?

No mention of the 2004 team? That's probably the most complete OU offense I've ever seen. If you compared the two I'd say:

Sam Bradford>Jason White

Demarco Murray, Chris Brown < Adrian Peterson

Juaquin Iglesias, Manuel Johnson, Ryan Broyles, Quentin Chaney< Mark Clayton, Mark Bradley, Brandon Jones, Travis Wilson

Jermaine Gresham> James Moses, Joe Jon Finley

2004 OL=2008 OL

I almost started a thread about this the other day, and mentioned something about comparing the '08 season to the '71 season in a different thread.

I agree that '71, the 'Bone, and Mildren is #1 on the greatest Sooner offense ever, but I'm starting to think '08 might come in at #1A. It's too hard to compare the '00s Spread with the '70s Wishbone, but damn, I've never been more excited watching our offense than when it's on the field this year.

'71 offense averaged more yards than our 2008 squad while using a system that did not conserve the clock.

The Maestro

Two different era's...hard to compare. The reason why I give the edge to today's offense is the complexity of defenses out there as well as the athletes on defense. Heck, as early as the late 80's teams like Nebraska had whoever couldn't play offense on defense. Slow, not as athletic talent on that side of the ball. Today defenses have studs all over the field, and look what we STILL do to them?

Just look at our offensive numbers in the fourth quarter of games this year. Only once have we really tried to score in ten games. We average 51 points a game but only 4 points a game in the fourth quarter. If we stayed on the pedal (Gawd I miss Billy Tubbs!) we seriously could be averaging close to 70 points a game. Think we couldn't score 100 on A&M? Chattanooga? K-State? We could also have put up 1,000 yards in those games.

This year's offense is like a video game. And to MOM's point, I think the difference between White and Bradford is what gives this year's team the edge. Yes, the edge over a Heisman winner. Crazy times.

Switzer would empty the bench in the 2nd half when he had a big lead. The difference is that the 2nd string would just keep scoring because the running game was the big threat! If Switzer would have wanted to stop the scoring, he would have started passing :) Stoops starts calling predictable running plays when he gets a lead. When the 2nd teamers come in it's more predictable running plays and the few passes they do try are pretty weak.

There weren't scholarship limitations back then either, so OU's 2nd team was arguably significantly better than most every other team's starters.

'71 offense averaged more yards than our 2008 squad while using a system that did not conserve the clock.13 yards a game, big deal. The 2008 team scores 9 more points a game and could very well make the yardage deficit against TT and oSu in what figures to be a pair of offensive showdowns.
