Nothing like making a big fuss, getting a good photo op, then moving on as if he did anything! :D

It's probably the best thing to do. I personally wouldn't throw it in his face, but he could have been hounded by "shouldn't a president be able to handle more than one problem at a time?"

Also, I think people have overlooked what a re-scheduling nightmare this could have caused if this debate was pushed back. Time is running out and I'm sure his schedule and Obama's are full with campaign stops.

And his campaigning has been restarted. Gee, I guess the crisis has been solved, huh? ;) I think lots of people, including his supporters, are wondering what in the heck has he been doing the last week or so.

Oh definitely, I agree 100% that it was the best thing to do. I just might have respected him more if he actually went through with his original intent.

He said he wasn't going to debate unless the plan was done...well now he's changing it to: well that didn't work out so well...so I better just say the plan is almost done (which it was before he even got there anyways) and go to the debate.

Does anyone actually think he made any positive impact in Washington while he was there for a day? I feel like all he did was pack a PB & J and went on a field trip to see what was going on...

No. What happened was he had a politically-motivated scheme to do all these things and then come out like a knight in shining armor who saved the day. He got there too late to contribute anything, and ended up adding zero to helping with a bailout plan. He then realized his plan was screwed up and he was not looking too good to the voters, and Obama was still campaigning and would steal the show in Mississippi and make JM look even more foolish. JM reversed course yet again. Bad week for McCain; good one for Obama.

I think he thought it would make him look responsible and good compared to Obama and it backfired, so he changed tactics really quick.

That sounds like flip-flopping.

John McCain actually did something with this?

So how do the republicans on here feel? Do you think this hurts him or helps him?

he's looking foolish right now, but it's politics...and it didn't change my mind.

Just put up my McCain-Palin sign yesterday.

Honestly, I don't think the debates really sway anyone one way or another. Most people don't watch them. Most people may watch half of a 2-minute news bit containing a collage of 5-second sound bites and some talking head analysis.

I just wish we could go back to 1929 and watch President Roosevelt on TV.

I wish that the candidates could actually say what they believed rather than parrot the typical Dem/Rep views. But then the media outlets would blast them and cause people to rage about how they're getting screwed by Candidate X because he said such and such.

no surprise here. a lot of the McCain stuff lately seems designed to "shock" the media cycle into changing....like his questionable position re: Rick Davis and the Frannie Mae/Freddie Mac paycheck never gets fully analyzed.

by saying he won't debate it implies that he's in a position of such importance "already" that this crisis is more important than running for Prez--or "they" just can't figure it out without him. which sounds like nice public service motivation. i'm sure it sounded good at a strategy meeting with Rovian Steve Schmidt and the aforementioned Davis. but, i don't think the public bought it.

not to mention the Keating 5 stuff that will still come out.

really? and I bet you watched USC kill Oregon st last night too eh?

All that was being talked about before he went up there was a 700B bailout. Reid asked him to come up to help "get the republicans on board" The conservatives were NOT going for the bill without conditions.

McCain went, sat and listened and reportedly was on the phone all night trying to find a path that the repubs would go along with and it sounds like they have something in the works. The 250B,100B,250B plan which I still personnally don't like but it is better than a 700B blank check.
McCain has always been able to converse with both sides of the aisle. Its something I don't like about him but he is one of the rare seatholders that can do that.

LOL! I bet you listened to Hannity to get this attempted face-saving tale. But here we are, into the weekend with a continued impasse, and the incremental bailout you described rejected by a group of right wing Repubs. But the hero's work is done, so back to campaigning and debating.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/26/art.mccain.wins.debate.jpg The McCain campaign released a web ad Friday claiming McCain won the debate.

(CNN) – The time between the final answer in any presidential debate and the campaign press release declaring victory can usually best be measured in milliseconds. But John McCain’s campaign – which has been downplaying his performance at Friday’s faceoff, offering praise for opponent Barack Obama’s “eloquence” and debating skill – seems to have decided it’s never too soon to start spinning the outcome.

The Washington Post (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/09/mccain_wins_debate.html?nav=rss_blog)reported Friday that the campaign was running an online ad featuring the headline: "McCain Wins Debate!" and a photo of a smiling McCain and an American flag background. Another featured a quote from McCain campaign manager Rick Davis: "McCain won the debate — hands down."

The Obama campaign quickly circulated the report – which came moments before McCain’s team confirmed he would take part in the evening debate after all.

Not necessarily, and nope not from hannity. evidently now they are just putting it on paper and working out the fine details. Now, I am not saying he did everything but he thought he could help (due to his bipartisian nature) and the bill is certainly different than before he got there.

I am not the greatest fan of his. but certainly prefer him over his Socialist competitor.

no doubt about that.

McCain was for the debate before he was against the debate before he was for the debate again.
