Whew! I finally have power. I just got it back about an hour ago. Ahh. Sweet a/c.

Friday, my lights started going on and off from 2am until about 5:30. Then, the power finally went out completely. So, I opened my bedroom window and I went to bed.

I got up around 11 and started setting up my hurricane supplies. Around noon, as I was enjoying a tuna fish sandwich with my still-cold mayo, I heard a boom. I didn't think anything of it. I was hearing transformers blowing up all night long and I just assumed it was one that was still holding on. Well, then fire trucks started rolling down my street. Then, police. Then, a crowd started gathering. I had no idea what was going on. My patio is next to the street and I couldn't help but hear people yelling and screaming. Some dude standing next to my open patio door yelled, "Grab my video camera!" That sure got my attention.

I finally decide to go out the door. People were running out of my apartment complex and going to the street. I saw my upstairs neighbor and I asked, "What's going on?" She said, "The apartment complex across the street just blew up!"

Luckily, I had my trusty cell phone with a fancy camera.

See the building on the left? There used to be an exact duplicate right next to it. It is gone. Completely. Nothing left but a pile of burning rubble. What you don't see are the tarps on the street covering up bodies and body parts blown into the street. I'm not sure why I didn't take a picture of that. I know that I would be pretty disturbed if I actually had that on my hard drive.

I've heard 3 different stories from 3 different police officers. One said that it was a natural gas explosion. One said that somebody hooked up some sort of generator incorrectly. Another said that a dying smoker accidentally set off his own oxygen tanks.

Of course with Ike, this wasn't even mentioned on the news. On a slow news day, I'm sure that all of the news choppers would have been flying over all day.

You live in the Westheimer district, Penguin? Those street signs look very familiar.

it'd have to be a damn big oxygen tank or generator to fit people in it.

Honestly, I have no idea how many people were injured or killed.

I can't find a single news story on the explosion on any of the Houston media websites.

an oxygen cylinder would not explode unless there was already a fire, it would have to produce euff pressure to splode. Now, oxygen will make an already existing fire burn so much faster and hotter. so say the place was already burning they could have then exploded and made for a faster burn but certainly nothing that large I doubt

Truck 69. heh heh heh.

Look at the burn pattern. Corners are still intact, 2nd story framework is in place from the C side of the structure with minimal exposure, no noticeable extension. Money says the majority of the damage is from the fire, not the BLEVE.
