Second time around: Two years ago, Washington's first play from scrimmage at Oklahoma turned into a 54-yard touchdown run by Kenny James, when James spun through the tackle attempt of then-freshman safety Keenan Clayton. Saturday, Clayton gets another crack at the Huskies as a starting outside linebacker, and he's in much better shape than he was when he disappeared from the lineup after the missed tackle against James.

"He's done well. He's graded well. He's come a long way since then," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "I'm pleased with a number of things, but I told him I want to see him be spectacular. I want to brag on him."

Clayton still spends a lot of time at safety when he drops back into coverage on passing downs.

He spent the entire Cincinnati game at the position.

What about this weekend in Seattle?

"I'll probably be in the box (the area near the line of scrimmage) a little more," he said.

Speed demon: How good is Washington quarterback Jake Locker?

"He's very explosive, has a huge arm. He's very, very fast," Venables said. "We've seen different articles from Pac-10 coaches that recruited him, that know him awfully well and have played against him, that claim he's a 4.2 guy (in the 40-yard dash). I've seen that from a couple coaches, Mike Bellotti being one. Pete Carroll says he's one of the best high school quarterbacks he's seen in the last 20 years.

"You have great respect for those coaches, and you watch the tape and see a big, fast guy.

"You watch him play USC and watch him play Ohio State a year ago, and outrunning everybody on the field."

Ends of story: Look for Alan Davis to back up starting defensive ends Auston English and Jeremy Beal Saturday, with the possible help from R.J. Washington.

"R.J. has taken a lot of reps this week and we're expecting to see him this weekend, " OU defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said.

Frank Alexander, a redshirt freshman who came in after Davis in OU's season opener before suffering an arm injury during a nightclub brawl Aug. 31, hasn't returned to practice. Wilson hopes to have him back by the TCU game Sept. 27.

Got it covered: Wilson, also the Sooners' special teams coordinator, said the addition of Austin Box was among the personnel changes in a kickoff coverage unit that gave up 265 yards to Cincinnati.

"We expect to be better. Obviously we can't be any worse," Wilson said of the unit in general. "We're looking forward to going out there and proving it."

I'm Excited to see Austin on special teams, I think he can make a huge impact there.

Putting R.J in there on passing situations sounds good to me. :D

Our Kickoff coverage needs to be way better, or we might be in trouble.

i'd like to see one of two things on kickoffs. 1 - touchbacks. 2 - no returns past the 30.

i don't think i'm asking too much.

I don't think that is possible with the kicker we currently have.

obviously we need to show him the weight room. texas did that a few years back and look how good their players have become.

keep in mind that we are now kicking off from the 30, not the 35. even NFL kickers have a tough time getting alot of touchbacks from 70 yards away

I believe the rule was implemented before the start of the season last year.

4.2 in the 40 for Locker... wow. Could he be faster than Stanbeck?

There is probably nobody in college football or the pros that runs a 4.2 40. Locker certainly doesn't....unless his dad timed him.

It was his mother handling the stop watch. :)

If he is a 4.2, then Broyles must be a 3.8. ;)

Tress Way could kick it out of the end zone in H.S. from the 40......He could hit the building in the North end of TU's stadium.....

Locker reminds me of Paul Smith of Tulsa, last season, only not as good a passer. He's probably more of a Pat White-type. Yikes.

Fortunately he's not surrounded by as good a supporting cast as White was, last year.

I'm hoping Locker will prove to be a good warmup/experience-maker for defensive linemen having to chase Reesing, Freeman, Daniel and Robinson around later in the season. And McGee.

Here in Tampa, they had Joey Galloway on talking 40 times. He was talking about Usain Bolt and the TO statement about outrunning Bolt in a race. Anyhow, when they asked Galloway about his 40 time when he came out, at tOSU's pro day, he ran a 4.1-something! I have heard this before. can anyone verify? However, I can guarantee that he doesn't run that now. He claimed that Aqib Talib is now the fastest Buc.

For you draftniks....if Locker is even remotely close to those claims, does he stand to be drafted at some position other than QB? Or are his passing skills remarkable enough to remain in that position?

He is not even close to that speed.

The only position he has a chance at in the NFL is at quarterback.

Chris Johnson was recorded at 4.24 at the combine last year. Most coaches/media/scouts, when they say a guy ran a 4.2 or 4.3, don't mean 4.20 or 4.30. They just mean in that range. If you're talking about a few hundredths of a second, speed measurement basically becomes pointless on that level, which is why they say it that way.

BTW..."The Kicker" we currently have...

Matt Moreland.

His Father is Victor Moreland of the NASL Tulsa Roughneck Champions before the NASL folded.

Ole Victor was a scrappy tough Soccer Player and a pretty decent Coach.

Matt came from Bishop Kelly HS here in Tulsa.

My guess is he's no quitter if he's anything like his Dad.

Hopefully things will improve.

Stoops isn't giving up on him and we shouldn't either IMO.

And where exactly does Malcolm Kelly fit on that list?

As for Tress Way, sure he could kick it 15 yards past the goalline from the 40, but this is college. The yard lines are longer...

The tee is different, too I believe.

Stoops said in his interview that Way is doing great, but not any better than what we currently have in Moreland.

Methinks with Tress Way's skill in punting as well, we're trying to get him that 2012 season of eligibility. In any case, it's amazing that Garrett Hartley hasn't done any better than he has so far, that guy was clutch and he's a big dude who can flat-out get into the ball. 70-yarders in practice looked like a thing of ease to him.

9/13/2008, 01:06 AM
Yeah i remember him kicking like a 68 yarder in practice
