View Full Version : Now that spek is turned off...

I have to get this off my chest.

I don't like the Flaming Lips.

I'm sure I just dont listen enough, or I'm just not in the right mood when I do, but I have this crazy notion in the back of my head that if this band was from Austin, they would never be mentioned on this board, much less revered.

There, I said it. Carry on. Maybe if spek gets turned back on in the future you can all neg me into bolivian. :D

I don't think relocating to South America would be the answer.

Yeah, I seriously doubt you would have been negged for revealing such. They are DEFINITELY an acquired taste. Plus, there are a lot of current Lips fans who can't deal with the eardrum-shearing sounds they used to make, and lots of old-school Lips fans who can't stand what they've become.

Add to that fact that there are people in OKC who have known them as people for years, hung out with them, do art-related stuff with them, etc., and yet don't care for their music. Plus, there is a whole new crop of people who know precisely dick about them, but now love them because it's the popular thing to do around here.

They are really an extremely mixed bag. And weird. Let's not forget that they are weird.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself

We had a pole one time on another board I frequent and the subject of most overrated band of all time came up.

I went with Aerosmith. I actually used to like them, but looking back, imho, their stuff just doesnt hold up. Most of it is really quite crappy.

It's funny; Priest Driven Ambulance is the first time I actually paid attention to them. I had seen them a number of times, but was always sortof "meh." When I heard Priest Driven, I thought "wow, it seems like they're on to something..." The strange thing is that after that I really got into the old stuff.

The Lips are mos def an acquired taste. As much of a fanboy street teamer as I am, I am also well aware that far from everyone will dig it. Which actually makes it better, IMO. In fact, the way people have gotten on their junk locally over the past couple of years sortof disgusts me. I guarandamntee for most of them it's not about the music. At the same time, I'm happy for the Lips, and they're making the most of it.
