From TV Week~ Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.

NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country. ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

This clearly perpetuates the assertion that poor people (democrats, obviously) are too poor to own a tv; or perhaps they're too busy commiting felonies, such as stealing televisions.

So basically, they are saying that McCain got a bump in ratings from people who were just too lazy to change the channel when they broke away from the game?

Well, you could deduce that if the numbers were less on the other stations, which they weren't.

rimshot.

The numbers on the other stations were essentially the same as the Dem convention, and the numbers on NBC were way, way above CBS and ABC.

So yeah...they were, and I think you can deduce that.

In fact, since they claim it was from "metered TVs"...meaning that they have no idea if people were even watching at that point....

Whatever, it's a preliminary look but the viewership trends across all networks and they were significantly higher than the Dem convention.

It doesn't mean much other than Obama isn't some messiah bringing the masses together, as he and his campaign would have you believe.

I do find it comforting to know that Obama was supposed to have a huge lead by now and depending on the poll, he's either slightly losing, slightly winning or dead even. This dog ain't hunting.

So, you're saying John McCain is the "celebrity" candidate now?Well, celebrities get paid based on their "draw" or ratings, so you do the math.

A half a percent doesn't really seem like a huge statistical advantage to me.

They both got a 7 share. So for both speeches, an entire 7 percent of all TVs in use at that time were tuned to the speeches.

Which means 95% of the country didn't give a crap about either speech.
