We always need a reminder every year. (http://americasbestonline.net/index.php/pages/collegehighestpaidcoaches.html)

1 Bob Stoops Oklahoma $6,500,000
2 Charlie Weis Notre Dame $4,200,000
3 Pete Carroll USC $4,000,000
4 Les Miles LSU $3,751,000
5 Nick Saban Alabama $3,750,000
6 Jim Tressel Ohio State $3,500,000
7 Urban Meyer Florida $3,400,000
8 Kirk Ferentz Iowa $3,030,000
9 Mack Brown Texas $2,910,000
10 Bobby Petrino Arkansas $2,850,000

More notables:
16 Mark Mangino Kansas $2,300,000
26 Mike Sherman Texas A&M $1,800,000
27 Art Briles Baylor $1,800,000
31 Mike Leach Texas Tech $1,750,000
55 Bo Pelini Nebraska $1,100,000
56 Todd Graham Tulsa $1,100,000
59 Dan Hawkins Colorado $1,100,000
61 Gene Chizik Iowa State $1,100,000
62 Ron Prince Kansas State $1,100,000
65 Mike Gundy Oklahoma State $1,050,000
66 Mike Stoops Arizona $1,025,000
99 H. Schnellenberger Florida Atlantic $375,000

Notable:
-There is only ONE... Oklahoma. We're No. 1! We're No. 1! :D

-Oklahoma coaches are not only the top paid, but also the Big 12 worst-paid, in Mike Gundy, rolling in at No. 66 with $1.05 per season.

- Unfortunately, Gundy is $25,000 richer than other Stoops, Mikey, of Arizona.

- Former OU disaster Howard makes even less than FIU's Mario Cristobal... cause for another on-field brawl?

-Tulsa's Graham makes $1.1 million, behind the guy he replaced, Steve Kragthorpe, of Louisville, who makes $1,450,000.

Thoughts? I didn't realize Stoops was now a $6 million man. Kind of snuck up on us, eh?

The 6 mil is because of the 10 year bonus of 3-mil.

How on earth is Kirk Ferentz making over $3,000,000 at Iowa?

You're right, 47straight - I checked the figure through several lists online and they made it seem like $6.5 mil was the annual thing. It really DID sneak up on us, lol.

As for Kirk, can you think of any other way to keep an Orange Bowl, Heisman-runner up coach in the state of Iowa? Ok, so he didn't WIN the Orange Bowl and the Heisman runner-up was one of his PLAYERS (who subsequently went undrafted), but you see... victories over Iowa State just aren't guaranteed anymore! :D

For the top 10, the high price tags buy you in 2007...

1- Bob Stoops: A conference championship and a 11-win season.
2- Charlie Weis: Three wins... wow, that's more than a million per win.
3- Pete Carroll: A conference and Rose Bowl championship.
4- Les Miles: A conference and national championship.
5- Nick Saban: Seven wins, including in the Indy Bowl vs. Colorado.
6- Jim Tressel: A conference championship and a 11-win season.
7- Urban Meyer: A Heisman and nine wins.
8- Kirk Ferentz: Six wins and no bowl!
9- Mack Brown: Another Holiday in San Diego and 10 wins.
10- Bobby Petrino: N/A, was in the Neffel.

We're not bolding names here (yes we are), but some of 'em aren't earning their salaries, knowaddamean?

No doubt about it, these guys are making some serious coin.

So, minus the one time bonus payout of $3 mil, Stoops is basically making $3.5 mil/yr? Doesn't he have a clause in his contract that requires OU to annually review his salary and ensure that he makes at least one dollar more than any other coach? Seems like I read that somewhere, but I could be mistaken...

Ok... well, I don't have their contracts sitting in front of me on a platter, that's for the sports guys to decipher, but I have seen OU coaching contracts before through Sunshine Law requests, so here goes...

COMPENSATION refers everything, not just money. It is common for OU coaches to get sports tickets (especially football ones), access to cars (Kelvin had two, methinks), membership in local golf courses (like the one near Sterling Apartments), etc.

Total compensation is often not just for coaching, per se. Kelvin, for example, had a corporation setup for all of his appearances on local shows and other work off-court. Insert phone call joke here. This type of contract adds more than a million to overall compensation... unless your discipline agreement says you don't get bonuses, lol.

BONUSES! Many coaches have certain performance incentive bonuses to encourage not only winning, but also good off-field conduct among players. Capel, Coale and Stoops all have incentives for winning championships, winning a certain number of games each season, going to a higher tier game (i.e. Final Four, BCS bowl), going to the championship, winning the championship, etc. There are also clauses that allow for greater compensation if graduation rates are met - but these are significantly less than on-court, on-field incentives.

Of course, as any professional athlete going backrupt will tell you when his house is being foreclosed (spek to the person who gets that reference), a salary is not a check that the team slides across the table for you to cash. Half goes to taxes. The other half? Bailing your players outta jail if you're in the SEC :D

Hope that helps!

EDIT: jlew, NP will kick your arse if you type that out loud. Sabanball, the reason you heard that is because that was Saban's contract at LSU, not Stoops'! And it was for winning the championship, which Satan did in 2003! Oh, and it was against Stoops, so let's never discuss that again!

I think these "highest paid coach" clauses are mostly a myth. (I have the same story about Mack Brown.) I can't see a public institution agreeing to such a thing, and it would take a pretty arrogant SOB to demand it.
