This guy wants to know where the rankings are:
http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2008/0901/ncf_g_craft2_412.jpg
(QB McAwful: I might have thrown 4 interceptions in the first half, but LA chicks only remember the final score... heh heh, SCORE.)

OUT: Meat Chicken, Vah Tek, Pitts, Rocky Top

Sexy picks to be in: UCLA, East Carolina, Penn State, Utah

If four teams go out, four have to go in, so I say those four teams are out, and the likely teams that are now ranked are these four. They all received national attention for their wins - UCLA on Monday Night Football, East Carolina and all the ESPN Holtz talk, Utah at the Big House over Michigan, and Penn State for Joe Pa's new record tying win. One more and he passes Bowden.

EDIT: Didn't realize Penn State was already ranked, so sub Penn St. for South Carolina... and Bama on the poll that it isn't ranked in.

ALL RIGHT YOU EFFIN HILLBILLIES... here ya go: ;)

USA TODAY COACHES POLL (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/usatpoll.htm)
1. Southern California (23) 1-0 1,462

2. Georgia (20) 1-0, 1,442

3. Ohio State (10) 1-0, 1,385

4. Oklahoma (2) 1-0 1,344

5. Florida (3) 1-0 1,295

6. LSU (3) 1-0 1,202

7. Missouri 1-0 1,197

8. West Virginia 1-0 1,035

9. Texas 1-0 1,030

10. Auburn 1-0 962

11. Wisconsin 1-0 853

12. Kansas 1-0 820

13. Texas Tech 1-0 732

14. Arizona State 1-0 679

15. Brigham Young 1-0 629

16. Oregon 1-0 566

17.Alabama 1-0 538

18. South Florida 1-0 480

19. Penn State 1-0 450

20. Wake Forest 1-0 388

21. Fresno State 1-0 269

22. Clemson 0-1 186

23. Utah 1-0 158

24. South Carolina 1-0 134

25. Illinois 0-1 92

Thoughts:
1- Don't lose this early in the season. No. 15 Virginia Tech (0-1, lost to East Carolina 27-22), No. 18 Tennessee (0-1, lost to UCLA 27-24 OT), No. 24 Michigan (0-1, lost to then-unranked Utah 25-23) all got dropped from the Top 25. Notice how the two ranked teams that lost are now No. 22 and No. 25, even though they lost to ranked opponents.

2- Yay, Big 12. I have bolded the conference teams that are ranked and as you can see, a very good representation in the top lucky 13. Other Big 12ers getting love include Nebraska (12); Oklahoma State (5); and Colorado (3)

3- Winning on nat'l tee vee is better than just winning. Receiving votes but not rankings yet include: UCLA 91; California 79; East Carolina 56; Tennessee 56; Boston College 36; Florida State 29; Virginia Tech 25; Boise State 24; Kentucky 20; TCU 15; Cincinnati 13; Connecticut 13; Nebraska 12; Arizona 8; Oklahoma State 5; Notre Dame 4; Colorado 3; Bowling Green 2; Georgia Tech 2; Central Florida 1; Miami (Fla.) 1; Stanford 1; Tulsa 1.

4- BCS buster alert: BYU and Utah staying undefeated means a church vs. state game at the end of the year might actually be ESPN's pick for Gameday. I would laugh if this was the same week at OU-OSU - insert "Don't wanna go to Stilly" joke here ;)

Well, if they lose to Ohio I'm pretty sure they'll probably drop. Otherwise, why would they move?

I am not a conference monger, but it will be interesting to watch the Big 12 vs. the SEC this year. aTm wasn't expected to be much, but losing at home to Arkie State hurts the cause. Tennessee's loss rivals that, but UCLA a better name and a road game for Tennessee. Both conferences have 5 in the top 17...South Carolina barely gets in the top 25 to make 6 teams ranked for the SEC and just 5 for the Big 12. But, from what I saw, I think OSU is better than South Carolina.

Good matchup for conference supremacy this year.

Yay, one vote for TU in each poll!

At this rate, all we have to do is go undefeated for 146 more weeks and we'll crack the Top 25! :D

Yeah, it's hard to gauge ranked/unranked this early in the year clearly and concisely, unless the teams are in both polls or out of both polls.

By the end of the year, I expect both polls to be nearly identical... not that the AP poll matters anymore :D

EDIT: and yes, very cool to see Tulsa get a vote

I would just like to say that some media have been really, REALLY sheedy in their conference rivalry reports.

Saying that Oklahoma State took down a BCS conference opponent and Pac 10 representative is accurate, but would be like saying that Wake Forest took down a Big 12 team. Yes, you took down THE WORST in the Pac 10, THE WORST in the Big 12. It would be more accurate to state that, rather than just say that it was a Big 12 or a Pac 10 team.

Such could be the case if Arky State wants to swagger around saying it beat a Big 12 opponent... but that's slightly different, because Arkansas State is not a BCS team and at least Texas A&M had a winning record last year.

Calling Missouri's win over Illinois a Big 12 win over the Big 10? That's fine - they both went to high caliber bowls last year and had winning records. Talking about taking down a conference when it's weakest representative was your opponent? That's like schooling Patrick Ewing Jr. and saying you beat Ewing! Or... say... boast about beating Notre Dame last year when everybody else did, too!

Err... ummm... rant over.

I think the message is clear: Win or you're out. Win after you've lost and you can still be out. Win big and you're in even more. Win little and you could be out, especially if you've already lost.

This year is far too competitive to have almost-wins and almost-losses (if there's even a difference between those two). Kudos to our mid-major Big 12 teams *wink* for knocking at Top 25's door. Make sure to sneak in before the conference schedule starts :)
