Not being "in the know" on the OKC scene anymore, what do you folks think the support will be for the Thunder (or whatever they will be called)?

I lived in OKC during the days of the Cavs and the Blazers infancy...I attended many Blazer/Oiler "rivalry" games...with fans fighting in the stands, etc.

I left OKC before the Ford Center, and only have memories of the Myriad. Do you think the support will be there 3, 4 or 5 years from now, even if the Thunder isn't winning?

I think this is going to be the legit team, name colors, and logo and it will only be worse than about 200 entries that have shown up on the web. They whiffed on the branding protion of the franchise (bigtime) if this is actually it.

I think (hope...pray...) the logo might be a red herring, based on a text I got. It wasn't from someone inside the organization (though at this point I have some friends working there, they are TIGHT LIPPED), but it was someone who probably is in a position to know.

Unfortunately, I misinterpreted the text I got last night. I had sent him a text saying "I hope it's a red herring," and he replied back a few hours later saying simply "red herring." When I talked to him today he said he sent me that in the spirit of "...mmmm... ...red herring..." Basically, he knows squat. Which leads me to believe that is really the logo. Which, IMO, is national laughinstock material.

Other than that I'm really happy to have the team here.

That's an excellent point. I have grown accustomed to the name; it really doesn't bother me at all. Maybe they intentionally came up with a ****ty logo to distract from the semi-suck of the name. They can plod along for a season with a crappy logo and then rebrand with a really kickass one next season. Meanwhile, the name no longer sounds so bad.

Elaborate and grasping at straws, I know. :D

I'm not only unimpressed by how it ended up, but by our lack of originality in it all. The logo looks similar to the Nets':

The colors (Blue, Yellow, Orange) are the same as the Warriors:

It looks pretty much like any new or redone logo in the past 10-15 years, reference the Nets and Warriors logos. At least it doesn't have an upside down Nike swoosh over the letters like many of the corporate logos of the late 90's. Most logos (team or corporate) are not very good in recent years.

Thank you! I've been thinking about team names/logos that aren't like completely eye-catching. The Nets as you stated is one of them. I think another logo will evolve and this one will fade away.

The irony is they probably spent a ****load of money on that one. Ackerman designed it. Great agency if you're The Oklahoman or the NRA or Six Flags (wait...), but maybe they should have found a firm that specialized in sports logos. Just a thought.

That explains it all.

SME is probably the top sports logo design firm. Next might be Studio Simon, who coincidentaly the Oklahoma City Redhawks used for their re-design. Why either of the above or another reputable sports branding firm wasn't used is :confused:...

That being said, the logo has grown on me in one day. It looks better with the 'Oklahoma City' above the THUNDER text. And better on the 'Strong Blue' background.

Those firms weren't used because Oklahoma City hasn't figured itself out yet. Only a couple of cities in America have "best in the field" companies in pretty much EVERY industry. Just because we are arriving at "major league" status doesn't mean that we have to insist on only using local firms for highly specialized stuff like this, as if we're trying to prove something. At the very least Ackerman should have deferred a tiny bit and asked one of those firms to consult. I don't know, maybe they did. But the logo doesn't look world class to me.

That's not to say Ackerman isn't a fantastic firm. They have offices in Tulsa, Dallas, D.C., even London. They are bigtime, and have done a ton of great work. This just isn't their specialty.

Also, I think the town is still enough of a "small town" that Clay and Co. didn't want to offend Ackerman by going outside the market. Ackerman is, after all, the agency of record for Chesapeake, The Oklahoman, and others.

It's brutal. It's just a triangle with a basketball. I just cannot fathom how this makes any real sense as a legit logo.
