View Full Version : Hurricane Gustav

Looks like this could be the next bad one in the gulf early next week. Earlier in the week, it looked like it would drag across Cuba and weaken, but if it just skirts buy and heads into the Gulf as a hurricance already...yikes.

Hopefully it goes a different way...

We saw it shift to the west yesterday. Today, the track has come back east a little. Fact of the matter is that these models will be pretty useless until this thing rounds Cuba. I tend to favor the GDFL. Once it gets into the gulf, however, its anyones guess. It could track towards Houston or turn N to New Orleans again. The weather systems in place in 3 days will be what will guide it.

colleyvillesooner
8/27/2008, 10:09 PM
It's prolly gonna hit the gulf Coast somewhere, so lets just hope for some weakening...

High-pressure "ridges" repel storms, so if the developing ridge north of Cuba is strong, Gustav could be deflected westward and into the central Gulf of Mexico, where vast stretches of warm water could supercharge the storm as it heads for the U.S. coast.

But if the high-pressure system wanes, Gustav could turn north, unimpeded, and move overland, across Cuba. The temporary lack of contact with warm water would deprive it of power.

OUWxGuesser
8/27/2008, 11:47 PM
Upper ocean heat content is better for determining hurricane "potential" rather than simply the surface temp. They churn up water pretty quick so you need to look at the warmth of the water down a ways. Based on below, I'd expect it to go gang busters if it can survive Cuba, then start weakening as it approaches the US coast.

Yeah, it's pretty much gotten disrupted by going over Haiti. It could weaken even more if it goes over Jamaica and/or Cuba. Those areas are pretty rugged. Mountainous terrain rips tropical systems to shreds.

I like seeing a radar of a pefect hurricane, which this one will get close, but I also like seeing it die before it hits. I definitely don't like seeing my home beach rebuild for 4 years like after a Cat 3 Ivan busted up Gulf Shores a few years back.

If it strengthens like they are predicting in the warm waters of The Gulf of Mexico, then it will be stronger than Katrina. The storm went from tropical to a category 4 in 24 hours according to CNN. It weakened as the eye hit Cuba but they are expecting it to keep gaining strength as it approaches the US coast line.

Not looking good at all.

Everybody I know with hurricane experience says that getting hit by the eastern edge (as could happend to NOLA based on projections) is the worst possible situation. The tragic Katrina result in NOLA was mostly man-made (due to the decades of graft and redirected funds that should have been used to shore up levees), and all of the politicking post-Katrina obscured where most of the real HURRICANE damage happened: Mississippi.

If the current scenario plays out, there is a possibility NOLA could be for real finito. Erased. Effed in the Ay.

starting to look slightly better for LA. Doubt it will be a 4 when it comes ashore now.

Well, Katrina was a 3 when it hit and it still caused flooding.

If there's any good news about Gustav, it's that it'll be east of NOLA when it makes landfall and thus, Pontchartrain won't be inundated with the heavy rainfall that typically occurs on the west side of a hurricane.

They'll still have to worry about high winds though. Which could still push some water out of Pontchartrain.

Though the latest readings here show that it's now dropped to a category 3 (http://flhurricane.com/cyclone/stormhistory.php?storm=7) hurricane. Expected to reintensify though.

yeah, it should return to a 4 by this afternoon/evening they think.

Hmmm, most the forecasts have it centered to make landfall west of NO. Is not the east side of the hurricane that packs the most punch? If so, this can't be good.

Ya, true. At least the storm surge estimates are being lowered now. 12-16 ft..

Its still gonna be a strong hit.

After landfall, its starting to look more and more like Gustav will take a more westward track. SE OK may get some rain outa this.

I was just looking at this computer model which runs through Fri and it shows Gustav stalling in N. Texas still as a tropical depression. Do the Oklahoma local weather guys think this low pressure will still be hanging around Oklahoma next Saturday for the OU/Cincy game? http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200807_v5d.html?extraprod=v5d#a_topadhttp://img293.imageshack.us/img293/8642/gustavgiftk1.gif

When those storm systems start being influenced by fronts from the North, anything beyond a 24 hour forecast is a dart throw IMO.

looks like it will only hit as a 3, but with the east wall hitting NO, that's not good..

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that this thing will weaken drastically as it comes inland. I think it'll hit as a Category 2, miss New Orleans, and the damage will be what you would expect but nothing approaching catastrophic.

I just checked with the folks in Baton Rouge. Everybody is hunkering down and it sounds like they have plenty of food and water.

They aren't scared of hurricanes. They respect them, though.

BTW, for you insomniacs, you can watch Channel 2 in Baton Rouge via the innerwebs. They'll be broadcasting all night.

It'll cause damage, but a weak cat 3 that's not very big (as far as width) won't be a killer. Although a few idiots near the eye on the coast will die. One of my buddies mom drowned n Hurricane Ivan. The idiots stayed in Orange Beach and the surge swept them out into Perdido Bay. They found his dad clinging to a tree two miles north. Ivan took Gulf Shores about 4 years to rebuild from completely. This storm reminds me of it, except it looks like the places that will get the most wind are not that populous or built up. It will suck for them though.

They just showed some video (Direct TV 361) of the Industrial Canal and it is almost to the top. They were interviewing the Mayor and he pretty much admitted the water will come over the top. Hopefully it does not breach, again.

Apparently there is a barge that came loose and they are worried it could pierce one of the levees. Fox News has a shot of the Industrial Canal and the water is pretty much at the top.

Pretty cool on FoxNews...Geraldo caught a corps of engineer dude in the Industrial Canal tying some kind of potentially explosive tank in order to keep it away from the canal wall...brave guy. He was pulled safely back to ship.

I just called my sister in Baton Rouge. It sounds like they got it worse than New Orleans. A tree branch blew in an hour ago and busted their new bay window. She wasn't very happy about that!

They lost their power around 10am. And to top it off, a huge oak tree came crashing down in the front of their neighborhood and busted a water main. So, nobody has any water! Luckily, they have plenty of bottled water and they have an above-ground pool, so they are using that water to flush the toilets.

At last report, my dad is on the phone fussing at the power company for not fixing the power lines immediately. Who cares if there are 75mph gusts out there? Fix the lines!!! We need A/C!!! :D

OK you might have gotten lucky with the Cat 2...but remember...the levees gave out the day after Katrina. :pop:

1.9 million people evacuated, and so far not a single case of looting...unbelievable.

Two levees built by local parishes are in danger of breaching... still not over.
