Another BOK Center Act To Be Announced
Posted: Aug 22, 2008 08:14 PM
Updated: Aug 23, 2008 07:21 AM

Friday brings a vaguely worded announcement and stirs speculation about the next big act headed to Tulsa's BOK Center.

The city says it has a "monumental" act on deck, and it's even surprised the promoter could convince the act to come to Tulsa.

The promoter is Live Nation which represents U2, Jay-Z, and Madonna. Madonna is touring this fall, and has four open dates between her concerts in Denver and Houston.

The city won't announce who's coming to town until Tuesday.

A monster bill featuring AC-DC, U2, Usher, The Rolling Stones and Garth.

But no one will be able to get tix because the dang computer-purchases by the ticket brokerages will snap them all up 15 minutes after they go on sale.

Yep. Misusing "monumental" in an effort to make people think something, you know, monumental is about to happen and then crapping out the same thing you've already offered up is always worthy of an angry rain of fists.

badger

I lul'd @ the Eagles. I am quite surprised that you all expected more :D

BigRedJed
8/26/2008, 11:24 AM
The good news: you literally one-upped the Ford Center. We only had ONE Eagles show to open the FC. :D

Seriously, I wouldn't sweat it, other than the aforementioned misuse of "monumental." It took a few months and a few quick, impressive sell-outs before the FC started getting more impressive shows during its inaugural year, and that year ended up with the FC being ranked by Pollstar in the top ten venues worldwide for concert gross revenue. When it sinks in within the industry how fast that first Eagles show sold out, they'll start looking to include you in the rotation.

Factor in fewer sporting event nights in that building than OKC or other markets, and it will be ripe as a top-level concert venue. You'll probably start taking some shows from teh OKC because they will assume if the show is big enough a lot of us will drive over, and you present fewer scheduling conflicts.

But yeah, I'd prolly still want to rain fists on the hyperbole guy.

JohnnyMack
8/26/2008, 11:43 AM
And our building is cooler than yours.

You can admit it. It's OK. It won't make you less of an OKC wonk.

BigRedJed
8/26/2008, 11:58 AM
You have me confused with people who have to run one city down to feel better about their own.

BOK is a Cesar Pelli. End of debate. I've been on record with that since the plans were unveiled. That said, the FC improvements from the recently-approved penny tax are going to close the gap tremendously, especially as far as amenities.

Also, I'm mostly just an Oklahoma wonk. But you'll have to admit that OKC is just providing more positive stuff to talk about these days. Plus I'm privvy to a bit more related to OKC's inner workings than T-town's. Those are the reasons you hear me talking OKC up more than anyplace else.

badger

I don't take any of OKC's Tulsa ribbing seriously, and hope nobody takes my Tulsa > OKC jokes seriously either. We have two good cities in Oklahoma and they both have their own things to offer.

Playfully jabbing at the other is just sibling rivalry.

BigRedJed
8/26/2008, 12:03 PM
Well, some of it is playful, and some of it isn't. From both sides, actually. And it's dumb. From both sides.

See, you guys shouldn't worry that much about what comes through the BOK, anyway. Arenas like the BOK and FC typically only attract dinosaurs-of-rock type shows, massive country acts, or pop flavor-of-the day shows, none which are worth much more than bragging material. "Hey, we got Madonna!" Who the **** cares?

Occasionally you get a U2 or Foo Fighters or Police or Prince type show, but they're still bands that are in many ways past their prime, musically anyway.

As long as Tulsa has Cain's, the Brady and a few other places it'll remain one of the top markets in the U.S. for the kind of shows that are going to have more appeal to anybody who is truly interested in great music rather than figuarative trophies on the wall.

BigRedJed
8/26/2008, 03:34 PM
In a nutshell, most any band that can put 20,000 people into an arena is either a trip down memory lane or represents the lowest common denominator, musically.

Last I heard it was going to be sometime after the season starts, so that it will get more attention. In the meantime they've asked sports announcers to refer to them as the "Fill-in-the-blanks." As in "Mason grabs the rebound and fires it down the court do Durant. He dribbles and pulls up for a 15 footer... ...good for two! That brings the Fill-in-the-blanks back to within 35 points! Man, the team is really showing some improvement here..."
