I ran across a business that had a sign out front that says they do not accept cash. Credit and money orders only.

Isn't that illegal? Maybe it's some weird rumor I heard, but I thought that everybody and every business in the U.S. must accept cash to settle debts.

Am I just smoking something? I thought that was a federal law.

Depending on the nature of the transaction, it may be that no debt is incurred and hence the legal tender laws don't apply.

I guess not. It's OK at a DC cafe...

You wanting to buy something doesn't mean you have a debt to the store than you can settle with cash.

we dont accept cash or plastic, Only company checks or money orders. If you want to pay by plastic, you have to call a 1800# and go thru a bunch of hassle.
