View Full Version : PSA: Don't ever get a DUI!

Penguin

It's just a gift that keeps on giving. Legal fees, court costs, fines, probation officer fees, drug testing fees, DUI class fees, license renewal surcharges, alcohol/drug counseling fees, and, of course, increased insurance premiums.

But, at least I finally have something to put on the criminal background section on job applications.

In Texas, they are running commercials that state DUI: You Can't Afford It! They ain't joking.

I will never do something this stupid again! Call a taxi! It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the alternative.

Sorry you had to go through that. The whole drinking and driving thing is bad news but it's something that many of us have done without being caught.

Oh, yeah! Let's not forget my offender's ID. I got to pay for that, too.

As long as it wasn't a felony...

You aren't a Criminal.

You just got an expensive "Learners Permit".

Offender's ID?
You have some kind of special card?
Is this just for DUIs, or all offenders?

Oh, hell yeah! I got to meet them personally at 5am in my dorm room one morning. I heard somebody hit the doorknob. I didn't think twice about it because I figured it was a drunk. Then, a key went into the lock. That sure woke me up! Then, some dude dressed all in black came in and aimed a shotgun to my head.

What did I do? Did I confront the bad guy? Did I try to protect my girlfriend that was in bed with me? No, I closed my eyes and yelled, "Mother of God!"

Turns out my suitemate was harboring a bank robber and the SWAT team wanted to sneak in thru the bathroom.

Hmm, you should have seen the hail of beer bottles their cars got pelted with back in the mid 80's. I seem to remember them getting out of there and coming back with more and some NPD. heh, good times- the ATO hall party got a little out of hand back then.

And Penguin, I have felt your pain. It's a dumb thing to do and you really are rolling the dice everytime you get behind the wheel in that state.

A guy that was going through training at my wife's company was staying over night with everyone else at a hotel after the training and a wine filled dinner. This idiot decided to go get some smokes and more beer and headed off across the highway to a convenience store or whatever it was on foot! Well, it's around 12:30 and with the way peeps drive up here in NJ (WAY ****TY) a guy hits him as he was running out onto the highway. It turns out the guy had a few himself. The idiot employee dies immediately. We'll never know if the booze had any impact on the driver being able to avoid the "pedestrian", but the courts said it was a forgone conclusion because he blew more than a .09. WHAM! vehicular negligent manslaughter or something like that.

I tell this story to pretty much any friend that feels like he's Ok after a "few". Cuz sometimes, it doesn't matter if you are impaired or not. That little machine doesn't give a ****.

Oh, hell yeah! I got to meet them personally at 5am in my dorm room one morning.

Good times.

The scream next door* must have woke me up, and then I stuck my head out my door to see the SWAT team at both ends of the hallway. They motioned me to get back inside, and I went right back to sleep. I thought I dreamed the whole thing until Penguin corrected me later in the morning. :D

*The other side; I wasn't the suitemate!

I think all rental cars in the US should have these.

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2008-05/39178139.jpg

Also...if you have ever made the mistake of having more than a few and still getting behind the wheel...maybe you should think about one for your own vehicle too.

I wonder if you install these on your car, does your insurance go down?

The fact that you think you need one should probably make your insurance go up. ;)

At the casino in downtown Sydney there's a do-it-yourself breathalyzer (results not legally admissible in court) in the parking garage entryway.

It's just a picture ID that has my offense, court number, case number, and my "prisoner" number. It looks a lot like a driver's license.

I am required to show it if I am ever pulled over.

Holy carck! Is this something new? Never heard of it.
It's forever, like as in the rest of your freakin' life?
This whole concept is a bit odd to me. And smacks a bit of another way
to try to catch you doing something "wrong" by not having your little "I got caught" card with you. Just DUI'ers or all offenders?

All offenders. I just have to carry it as long as I am on probation.

Theoretically, sure, they could come to my apartment at any time and check. Luckily, there are a bazillion people on probation in Harris County, so the odds are pretty slim.

What are they going to do differently if they know that right away? They're going to run your license no matter what.

It's like when the cop says, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" Well hell, if you don't what I did I'm not going to give you any help. :D

A few years ago I decided I'd tried my luck way too many times on getting home in bad shape. I figured the odds were someday going to be against me, and I had a really bad feeling about it.

So now if I don't have a designated driver I don't drink, or I just don't go out.
