Will be speaking in Miami, Steve Owens home town, later this week. Any that live near there and that could attend, you're probably in for a stem winder and you'll be supporting a good cause....

Okay Sooner fans, explain this one. How is it a poster who lives in Alabama with the handle of Sabanball is updating us on where Joe Washington is speaking?

FYI--Even though I am a native Alabamian, I spent 10yrs and basically grew up in Miami,Oklahoma, went to high school there(Go Wardogs!), and still follow OU football. Does that answer your question??

hehe, SOMEbody's defensive this afternoon :D

Miami is awesome, unless it just rained. They still have Steve Owens Boulevard out there. I also met some country singer that went to OSU at Country Music fest from there. They said they avoid that street. Poke logic!

Some bike tour group went through Miami (they were from all over, but none were from Oklahoma) and I spent a few minutes teaching them the Oklahoma pronunciation of "Mi-am-uhh." They found it thoroughly amusing.

Wardogs. Now that's a football mascot that you can sink your teeth in to. About 25 miles from me is a town called Fisher. Their mascot? The Bunnies.

Was it Keith Anderson? He and I graduated HS in the same class, after that he went to the cow college in Stillwater. He's making it big in Nashville now.

As surprising as it may seem, despite its favorite son being an OU Heismann winner, it has always seemed to me that Miami is predominantly an "OSU" town, and has been since at least the late 70's, IMHO. Go figure...

Yeah, that was his name. I really was the most underqualified person to be at that County Music Swamp Fest :D

It seriously was a swamp. That's what happens after a million inches of rain and puddles everywhere.

Badger,

Miami sits in a flood plain by the Neosho River, that's probably why you saw all the water up there. They've had two really bad floods up there in the last two years.

Other than Steve Owens, Miami is not known for much, except spoonbill catfish(people come from all over the country to catch them there when it is in season), and as one of the original cities along the old historic route 66 hwy. I understand they've got a indian-controlled gaming facility there now, but other than that if you want to do anything or eat somewhere nice you pretty much have to drive south to Tulsa or north to Joplin, Missouri. Even though I consider it my hometown, I would never even think of living there again. There's just nothing going on there now and pretty much a ghost town in the downtown area...

Yes, but I was born and raised in OKC (John Marshall H.S. '71), attended OU from 72-75 and worked for the University from 75-85. I moved up here from Dallas in 1996. My handle is the one I have used on the internet from Day 1 in 1995 and does not refer to the coach of another team.

Little Joe was my first favorite player. i thought i was going to die as a 6-7 year old when my pops explained to me that college players could only play for 4 years (3 then).

and since Jacie brought it up, i'm pretty sure the first post i ever made on a message board (boomersooner.net) in about 97 i'd guess...pretty much said the same thing i posted above. no idea what handle i used then. i started KC in the original IT. pretty sure.

Jacie,

When I first saw your handle, I figured it was akin to J.C. Watts, the great OU wishbone qb and congressman...at least that was the first thing that popped into my head.:pop:

You need to come home more often. The City has straightened out that goofy Main Street and major parts of town are being renovated. After the flood of 2007 hundreds of houses had to be completely renovated and it seems that even the folks that didn't have to caught the re-modeling bug. There are now 5 major casinos, all with restaurants that are as good as anything you will find in Joplin. Clint Black was here last week, Rascal Flatts has done a concert and Travis Tritt is on deck so the hometown Poke is no big deal. If you don't like CW, Tony Bennett will be at the Downstream Casino next week. 4 new hotels (not motels), a new movie theater on Main Street owned by the Miami Nation, a new Quiznos and half a dozen fair to middling Mexican restaurants.

NEO A&M has been the training ground for many an Oklahoma Sooner (think Scott Case) and has won the Junior College football championship more times than I can remember.

It's a long haul for homegames but it has it's benefits.

It's a little town but we like it. Wish there was more for the young folk like you but you can't have everything. Were you all Goodrich transplants?

Yes, and no. BTW, you must be one of the very few OU fans in Miami...Ha!! When I lived there from '76- '86 it was OSU country all the way, from the faculty at MHS to the movers and shakers that were in elected office at the time. Dale Patterson(NEO coach at the time) was always an OSU homer....

We left after the plant closed, but we originally were from Alabama, so when we left Miami we were coming "home". I will always have a special place in my heart for Miami, but honestly I could never live there again....Good to see that you all are finally starting to get some economic development there(tracker marine) though. I still have many friends in Miami.

BTW, I went to school with Keith Anderson...

Oh, you would be surprised. I don't know if the Stoolwater crowd is thinning out but there are still enough of them to make fun of. They keep a pretty low profile during football season.

Tracker Marine is not a big deal. Blitz Manufacturing is a very solid manufacturing company and does business globally. The 9 Indian Nations have done far more for the community than the "movers and shakers". If they were Pokes that explains a lot.

Glad you are enjoying being back in 'Bama. It is one of my favorite places too but I could live there so guess it all works out. Had a blast in Tuscaloosa and their fans are just the best. Just goes to show - there's no place like home.

My sister lived in Miami from around 1975 to the mid-1980's. Her husband worked at Eagle-Picher and my oldest niece and nephew were born there. I went to NEO from 1985-1987 (National Champs in 1986-87 school year) and had coach Patterson in class. I can't say that I remember him being an OSU homer, buts I probably simply blocked out anything poke related. I then found myself enrolled at Pokie State after graduating from NEO (man, hindsight is 20/20). Patterson's son ended up coaching at my high school (Claremore Zebras) in the late 90's and realized that they were Poke leaners.

On top of all that, Miami was a big football rival of ours in high school. I have a funny story about a pre-game locker room instance when I was a sophomore that I won't elaborate on, but they were ranked #1 (I don't believe we were ranked) and we went to Robertson Stadium and beat them 18-0. I like to think it was me that got everyone loosened up from pre-game jitters that allowed us to come out and play a great game.

Dale Patterson is now director of football operations for the Pokes--so I rest my case.;) Not saying he wasn't/isn't a good coach, on the contrary, he had a great run at NEO.

Patterson's predecessor Glen Wolfe wasn't too shabby. He was the head coach when I was at NEO.

He was at the Caravan in Houston this year. First time I have had a chance to get an autograph from him. You are right - he does still look as if he could suit up and play.

You're absolutely right. If I'm not mistaken, he was the coach when the norsemen won the juco NC in 1980. His son, Mike Wolfe, played at ....Okie State back in the mid 80's.

Yep, I was at that game in Garland, Texas. I remember it vivdly as it was on my 14th birthday (12/6/80). Scott Case was on that team. One of my other sisters was a cheerleader for the Norsemen that year (1980-1982) and ran the hurdles on the track team.
