Apparently USA track and field need remedial baton passing lessons. It would be nice if the 4x400 teams have it together to compensate.

Who saw the US sweep the 400m? If you saw that, who saw the bronze medalist dive towards the line, injuring himself, but just barely securing the bronze in the process? That's heart.

U.S. Sweep in the 400! However, Jeremy Wariner is a great 400m runner, but he acted like a punk. He got blown away by his countryman, and Wariner quit with about ten meters to go, just let up in a final with medals at stake. He pouted afterwards and did not congratulate the winner. He was sour during his interview and spoke with the grammar of a high school dropout. Has he considered import racing instead? He looks like someone who races suped-up Civics with chrome hubs or something.

I wasn't impressed at all by Wariner either. In fact, I was embarrassed he was even representing the US, not because of his performance, but because of his attitude. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, I give props and utmost respect to the bronze medalist who showed he truly wanted that medal.

And ladies. Argh.

Side note: the chick that was running the anchor leg for the Ukrainian relay squad? Yowza. I thought she was Swedish for a minute, except for the dark hair. The other three Ukrainian chicks? Urg.

Why, did he take the gold medal winner "hunting" after the race or something?

Was anyone else annoyed that tape delayed the game...by an hour? They kept saying watch the US play at 9:15, then the Today Show kept going until 10, and they then played the game (from the start) even though only a half had been completed. Did we really need to get another hours worth of the Today Show? Of course, watching it online consisted of no commentary (bizarre, since there was obviously commentary on the tape delay) and constant "buffering", so you couldn't really enjoy it. C'mon NBC, if you're gonna pay billions of dollars for the games, get it right!

Today was just insane in my office. Two Thai boxers - light welterweight Manus Boonjumnong and flyweight Somjit Jongjohor – were in the semi-finals.

My colleague Geoff and I went to lunch a little early so we could be back in time for the 12:40pm and 1:40pm bouts. The elevator going down to the ground floor was full and, when I whispered to Geoff that we need to eat fast, the whole elevator broke out in laughter because everyone had the same idea.

When the bouts started, everyone in my office was screaming and yelling and jumping up and down and punching in the air, even the women analysts. It was actually a bit unsettling – the upper cuts, jabs, rights, lefts and below the belt punches. I got scared and retreated back the safety of my office to watch the TV screen.

Manus and Somjit both won and will be fighting for the gold tomorrow. The streets of Bangkok will be completely empty when they fight, which is pretty amazing for a city of 10 million.

I think the US women are going to have enjoy the surprise Silver, and the joy of taking one set from the Brazilians, because they are starting to look pretty out-matched. Still one hell of a run for them, though.

That's the setter. It's their job to "set" the ball where the big girls can pound it. If that person is always in the middle, whoever receives the serve knows where to hit it to get it to the setter.

I think volleyball may be the most intriguing sport to watch from the standpoint of how much timing plays into everything.

Yup, I'm fairly tall (6'3") used to be able to jump pretty well and still I was not great, or even especially good at volleyball, because I didn't play enough to develop that timing. To jump in the air as high as one can and hit the ball as hard as one can is not easy.

Which is why it always has surprised me that volleyball isn't bigger than it is. Granted my perspective is skewed by being from Nebraska where volleyball is a big deal, and given that my mom played collegiately and coached high school ball for a long time. But volleyball is a fun game to watch, especially live.

Frozen Sooner
8/23/2008, 08:41 PM
It really just baffles me how intricate their plays really are. I mean, on any given set you've got a couple of people faking a spike while two other people are setting up a block and another person is actually lining the ball up and timing her jump to pack the ball at the other side.

Seriously, it's just beautiful.

I respectfully believe the exact opposite. Beach Volleyball is extremely difficult and requires a ton of talent and endurance.

if usain bolt were to run the 40, his time would be a 3.5. at 6'5 with that kind of speed, you think the nfl gives him a shot?

100m at 9.69 compared to 40yds at 3.5 doesnt work. If it did then maurice green and others would have already ran 3.5 40's

Frozen Sooner
8/27/2008, 03:58 PM
hmm, i guess the espn guys didn't do their work.

The ESPN guys aren't hired for their skills in calculus. To get that number they must have been assuming a constant rate of speed. A sprinter is still accelerating at 40 yards.

silverwheels
8/27/2008, 04:03 PM
Yeah, they took that number after he had hit full stride and was running at top speed.

GottaHavePride
8/27/2008, 08:19 PM
Man, at the end of 100m Usain Bolt STILL hasn't hit full speed.

But yeah, a 3.5 assumes that his time in the 100m was run at a constant speed. He'd still have to accelerate from 0. Now, I don't doubt that Usain Bolt would have a really goddamn fast time in the 40, but he wouldn't be at 3.5.

royalfan5
8/27/2008, 10:15 PM
Also, running really fast in straight line is no guarantee of football utility. The history of football is littered with really fast dudes that sucked at football. At his height his lateral moves and fluidity might not be all that spectacular.
