First Vonnegut, and now him.

one of the many to get jailed during Stalin's rule. He put a clear face on the very dark side of the Soviet Union when his manuscripts began to "leak" out.

The Gulag Archipelago is a tough read (i.e. not enjoyable) but worth it. The terrorists in guantanamo are in relative luxury compared to what he went through.

I've seen the horrors of Guantanamo...

Thanks to Harold and Kumar.

I read much of his writings in high school in the 70s. He painted very uncomfortable pictures in my mind with his descriptions. Hard to believe a "zek" could produce reliable scientific work under those conditions. It's good he lived almost 20 years after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.
