My Pop is possibly the best guitarist I have ever heard (not that I am biased or proud of him).

Seriously though, here is a sample youtube of him (on the left) with Tommy Emmanuel (from Australia).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORYx_-7tGno

Again, I was the drum and trumpet player of the family.....not geetar.

**EDIT**

Well, my guitar center comment went away for some reason......but he (Pop) has bought a few guitars from gc and has had no complaints that I know of.

1. Tommy Emmanuel is the bomb and he'll be back in Norman in October!
2. No matter where you buy a guitar make sure the store you buy it at is willing to set it up properly. They're rarely correct out of the box.

It's a Tobacco Starburst but is pretty much like this one.

GC takes a lot of heat for being the Wal-Mart of music stores, and they provide no service at all.

HOWEVER, I have bought 4 guitars from them, a Larrivee acoustic, a Strat, a Les Paul studio, and an Ibanez hollow body electric. Each guitar I got for a price that no one else could touch. When the Les Paul needed some warranty work done, they gave me the number of a local guy that honored the warranty, and I have gone back to him for other work since.

So, when it comes time to waste more money on a guitar that only I will hear shut away in the spare bedroom, I will once again go to Guitar Center.

Curly Bill
8/4/2008, 11:17 AM
Yeah, I don't think I'd ever sell mine either, whether I learn to play worth a darn or not. I just always wanted one and I got it. To me it's a work of art.

Knowing how songs and riffs are played is not my problem, I have a pretty good ear and can figure out how most songs I want to play songs are being done.

It's the practicing enough to be able to actually play it that's screwing me.

If you're new to guitar, don't get an electric. Get an acoustic and develop some finger strength and callouses. There are a lot of inexpensive Fender acoustics out there that are pretty good quality.

As far as electrics go, I'm definitely a Fender man... and Guitar Center isn't bad at all, but it depends on the staff and store. They're prices are pretty good, but there are local shops that can compete, so if possible I'd go local (just make sure you're getting the best deal).

Also, all guitar playing is in the picking hand... Fretting is easy once you get used to it, but what separates the greats from everybody else is their ability to pick (either using fingers or a pick).

Now I'm gonna go play some Guitar Hero... ;)

Amazing what you can do with 3 chords. Setzer is pretty stinking good too. Very underrated guitar player. That vid just shows the importance of the picking hand as compared to the fretting hand. spek...

Wow, you guys have some nice pieces. As far as GC goes, I don't know. Someone said you get what you pay for. Generally, I find that to be true.

If your making a large purchase, I would probably get it from somewhere reputable. If your getting something to start out with, it will probably be fine.

my only real beef with GC is the morons that work there. don't get me wrong, there are some nice folks that know their stuff, but there's also that 30 year old burn out ****** that thinks he's gods gift to music because his alternative band played a couple local gigs 10 years ago.

one of my main reasons though to go to GC is to undoubtedly see at least one clown shredding it up on a new BC Rich. makes me giggle every time. :D

and i might get flak for it (bassists get no love) but here's my new piece that should be in by week's end.

Dude... if you have a Warlock, do yourself and your nephew a favor and send it back to the pits of hell from whence it came. Those guitars are AWFUL! IF you're gonna go cheap, get a Squier or Epiphone. At least those are cheap versions of really good guitars.
