...is there one thing you look at first? A position or characteristic a candidate has to have before you'll vote for them?

I should have included that for me, the first thing I want to know is if they're pro-life. If they are I'll look deeper. I won't vote for them if they're not.

Is pro-life the same as anti-abortion...

To answer your question, for this conversation, sure.

Yup, McCain is not the best supporter of the 2nd Amendment in the world, but in this case he's much the lesser of two evils, and the very real possibility that the next POTUS will get to replace 2 or 3 Justices makes me cringe at the thought Brack could get to do that.

interesting how many (I'd guess) GOP loyalists in this thread cop to being a single "issue" oriented voter....but, will hammer away at Obama i'm guessing for "lack of experience" or no military expertise in the coming months.

The question of the thread was what is the first thing you look at. It did not ask what is the only thing you look at. I answered as such. For me the 2nd Amendment is not the only thing I look at, but it is the first.

SoonerBorn68

Believing in Liberty is truly admirable but voting 3rd party in this election is a vote for Obama.

I don't like McCain but he's the only thing in the way of becoming the Socialist States of America.

I couldn't care less about Obama's lack of experience. I'm worried he's going to raise my taxes, take my guns, & return the USA to the '70's.

If Bush didn't overturn Roe vs Wade, Obama won't be overturning the 2nd amendment. I used to think the Supreme court appointees mattered, but now not so much.

I voted for Bush cause he seemed "down to earth", a guy you wanted to have a beer with and he was conservative (the justices issue). Man all those criteria are now out the window.

Now I'm looking for someone who can put on a strong face and guide us through some rough times. I don't know who that is yet.

I guess for me my criteria changes as time goes by. It all depends on the individual election and candidates.

I don't agree with this. We've got to vote 3rd party sometime and this year with these two numbnuts is as good as any.

The Socialist thing is just a scare tactic. We've been heading down that road for 50 years, republican or democrat.

What I've learned from this thread is that there's a lot of wishy-washy people out there.

I'm astounded (actually I'm not considering the geniuses we have around here) that nobody said "I vote for the guy who's stance on the issues most closely reflects my own." Geez people.

If you're still undecided in this election, you seriously need to just think about not voting at all. And find a tall cliff and ask somebody to push you off it. Please. For the children...

I bet you guys take 20 minutes to decide what you want to eat when you go out to a pizza restaraunt too.

2nd amendment won’t be over turned. Strongest lobby in the effing country. I don’t like the way a gun makes some wuss think they’re tough and I’ve never owned one. Or owned a gun for that matter. I would never support a ban on guns. Socialist deal ? Same thing. Scare tactic B.S. It’s pretty much already happened. Look at the Nanny State we deal with daily. Banning smoking everywhere but your own damn house. Regulating fat content of food in a restaurant. Companies telling you how fit you have to be for insurance that sucks anyway.
I wonder if Perot hadn’t dropped out and then dropped back in if it would’ve strengthened the 3rd party chances of winning? The guy got almost 20% after he flew the coop and then came back to the barnyard.

It says everything I need to know about a politician: Do they think I'm a trustworthy citizen who is a responsible adult, or one of the dumb peasants who needs to be lorded over and controlled?

I used to worry about a candidate's positions and all that crap, but that's pretty worthless. I liked what George Bush had to say in the 2000 campaign, but he did a 180 on most of that, and the stuff he did try to do turned to crap.

The hotness of the candidates' wives seems like a criterion at first, but that would mean voting for Dennis Kucinich for president, so that's obviously not a good idea. Plus, what about female candidates?

I'm tempted to just vote against the incumbent every time, but what to do when the incumbent isn't running?

I used to think I was a libertarian, but now I realize that I'm more of a realist, or I guess you'd call that being a moderate. Don't play the blame game, don't reject an idea out of hand just because it came from the other side. Fix the damn problem. So, is a candidate capable of recognizing problems and determining what the best course of action is, even if that means reversing his position or going against his ideology? Based on this criterion, George Bush is the Supreme Ruler of Planet FAIL.
