how did you ever guess? Seems that our office people in Columbus like to look at the porn and open strange attachments in their email....everytime I get close to deleting an infected file, the computer shuts down and restarts....very nice

That sounds like my home computer. I swear it is like it had sex with every computer on the planet and caught every conceivable STD there is. And, I do not visit porn sites, but I think my computer does. The free downloads of the virus scans are far worse than viruses, or at least they seem to be.

I even paid US$15 for some anti-virus software with a MS tag and my credit card showed I paid some scam artist in Russia.

The really weird thing is that my computer reboots every few minutes while I'm on ADSL from 7am until 10pm. Outside that time frame and I'm normally online outside that time frame, we get along fine. And, that leads me to suspect that the offendig virus is sponsored by my ADSL provider.

Or, that just could be the hours of the spooks monitoring my emails and postings.

I'm ditching this thing and buying a new one when I get my bonus check next month.

Antivirus2008 or something of that nature...I m pretty sure thats the Russian thing....Its pretty bad.....It links itself with winlogon, explorer, and some other processes and its a booger to deal with...this particular machine is ate up with it...And since the user did not have a password to logon to windows with, the malware/trojan/virus created one and now you can't logon to anything, safe mode or not..

Could you boot the machine with say a linux live CD, and then mount the windows drive, scan it, and remove the infected files that way?

Is that even possible?

It should be.

Or perhaps boot the machine with a linux live CD, and use it to back up the files/areas you need to keep to some other kind of device, and then reformat and start over.

AVG cleaned AV2009 off of a machine where I work. I'm pretty sure that the trojan uninstalled McAfee...because it's MIA.

I loaded avg and the latest update onto a jump drive that I didn't care about and installed it.

The cool thing was that the machine had dual monitors, because every so often the trojan would fake a BSD on the primary monitor.

Also, the trojan faked a duplicate security center icon in the control panel.

Have you toasted a thumb drive doing that, yet? I had Fedora 9 on one. That sucker got real hot and died.
