One of my employees goes to see the doc because he is depressed (supposedly). He just gets back and tells me that the doc suggested that he quit work and get on SSI.

Other than filling this post full of expletives I just want to say what a sad state of affairs we are in right now. "Let's live off of the government....don't work....you dont need to.......you are depressed." Frickin' moron.

I wish we could just get rid of it all.....if ya don't work....no $$. No more pooping out babies for $$......well anyway...ya get my point:D

Rant over:mad:

Some folks have to experience SSI for themselves in order to get out of their depression.

Sometimes...once they get on the SSI thing...they find out they aren't as depressed as they thought they were.

Some though...get on it and try to fill in the gaps selling drugs, stealing and or illegally doing contract work under the table.

Some folks don't see a future working where they are...

It's a sad state of affairs.

Chin up Bonk.

Yeah, you'd have to have a pretty bad case of depression to need to go on SSDI over it.

I mean, I was diagnosed as depressed several years ago and haven't even missed a single day of work due to it. SSRIs can work wonders.

Exactly. You'd have to fail multiple treatments before I'd even think about suggesting SSI. Hell, I think they're still doing ECT for severe depression that's refractory to medication.

As one who suffers from chronic depression,I hope you NEVER do.
It is a BEAST that must be fought and it's something that's not....
"ALL IN YOUR HEAD".
Actually, you should be glad that person willed himself to seek treatment.
Sure, the system isn't perfect and has many flaws and some do try to
fleece it and milk it for all its' worth.
But this person DID SEEK HELP.
Please don't rush to judgement and BE THANKFUL said person didn't
return and "GO POSTAL" and inflict harm on you or others!
And,if this person has worked and paid into this system, they deserve
within reason the benefits due them just as YOU would do if faced
with a similar crisis.

(I don't know if they still do this, but I believe they do) For people who don't benefit from medicines, they can try electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroconvulsive_therapy). I've seen it done once at University Hospital. Pretty cool (for me, probably not for the patient).

Naw, he'll prolly claim the depression was work-related and file a workers comp claim on you.;)

Srsly though, just because he told you that's what the doc said don't make it so. It might have been like this: "Doc, I'm depressed. Can I get SSDI?" To which the Doc may have replied, "I dunno, I suppose you could file it and see." (See my sig. below)

I had to go on anti-depressants when I couldn’t keep my usual med lit at high altitudes…………. I mean, my usual med became hard to afford and find. Seriously, reuptake inhibitors are a good thing. I finally quit repeating the “not me” mantra in regards to depression when my EAP dude describe my problem to a “T”. Dysthymia.
I didn’t like that little epiphany trust me. Why? Because I know how I reacted to others when told they had been diagnosed as depressed. By since I’m a highly intelligent super-being, I’ve come to recognize behaviors before I carry them out and I’m able to help the world and make it a better place because I’m in it.
Did I mention one of the symptoms is delusions of grandeur?

Depression sucks but you can get help. Even someone as strong willed as Winston Churchill had his “Black Dog” episodes. No, he wasn’t the secret fifth member of Zeppelin. "Black Dog" was Churchill's name for his depression. The nickname implied familiarity and an attempt at mastering the depression. You know. The dog my bite you in the azz, but if you recognize it is chewing said azz, you can hit on the nose with a rolled up newspaper (treatment). I understand bonkuba’s frustration but getting disability can be about as easy as finding a particular needle in a haystack of needles.

I was just struck by what a moron this doc seems to be....or in my simple terms contributing to all the folks that I am having to pay for with my tax $$.

Believe me, I know folks get depressed. God knows I have been through my share of rough patches and folks handle things differently. It's just the ones that you can see right through and the docs still give the papers to them (just for the $$ I guess...I see no other reason).

I hate paying for folks that are just taking up my air.;)

I just spoke to him again in my office.....he told me that he was just wanting meds. It is too easy now days to just say "I am depressed".........ok....dont work.....no need. Oh yeah, here are some meds.

Since you say you are depressed I am not doubting you at all, dont get me wrong. I am just saying that more often that not these folks are full of more than the papers they want for my tax dollars. I have seen it many times and unfortunately will see it many more times.

By the way, he no longer works for me. I thought I would help him out with his doctors orders :D Seriously, I did not have to have a reason to let him go (within the 90 days) and he has done more than this to be let go...was on the bubble anyway.
