So I am moving to my own place in a couple of weeks. Since I am paying for a kitchen, I figure I might as well use it. While I am currently a passable cook, it is much in the style of my Grandfather who cooked what he called "slop" for every meal, in which he would just mix a bunch of random food up and eat it. Anyway, I figure I might as well try and develop some reasonable cooking skills, and I was wondering what the best way to go about that is? TIA.

Your grandfather had the right idea.

You should subscribe to Cook's Illustrated. It is like a cooking version of Consumer Reports. They have some good recipes as well as recommendations for cooking related products. The best part is that their recipes explain why they cook things the way they do in addition to how to actually get it done.

It was all generally pretty good, except for when he would poor all the varieties of salad dressing into one bottle and mix them. That didn't go so well.

Learn to make gravy.

Once you can make gravy in many different forms, you have the patience to make everything else happen. It's just a matter of finding what works with certain dishes you'd like to eat, fine-tuning the process, researching what you don't know, and making it happen consistently.

And for the love of God, don't fall into the trap of needing a recipe to do anything but fart and boil water in the kitchen. That's retarded.

they publish these books called "Cookbooks," this would be a good start - since you don't have a wife!

The grill is your friend, use it.

Royal...

Remember lots of stuff you cook can be warmed up nicely the next day in your microwave. It's a real money saver. :D ;)
