View Full Version : Is this year seriously the ONE?

We have everything in our favor. One of the nations best QB's, the best O-line in the country, the best TE, solid receivers and a very good defense. Not to mention, we have a favorable schedule.

So, is this the year we win it all? It has been a long time since we have won a national title and I'm hungry for another.;) If we don't, I think it may be quite a while since we are losing a lot of guys next year.

Yes. This is 'The Year'.
How do I know?
Well, you may choose one or more from the list below, Because I'm:
1. Incredibly well informed and brilliant at interpreting a stunningly complex datastream.
2. Dam lucky with my guesswork.
3. Know some people who know some people who fly around in black helicopters 'fixing' things like this.
4. Supremely overconfident and typically drunk.
5. Married to flights of whimsy and bettin' on the come.

but mostly? just tired to death of the off season.

Everyone keeps saying our schedule is easy, but let's not forget that we have three bogey road games at Manhattan, College Station, and Stillwater that have been nothing but tough the past 3 or 4 times we've been there. Never a blowout win, several real close ones, and a few big upset losses. Let's not forget what happened the last time we went on the road to a Pac 10 school. Schedule aside, offense isn't a question, but it's how the linebackers and young guys on defense step up.

Oh what you said is what I've been thinking lately. Especially the Washington game.We go undeafeated through regular and post season, this will be one of the sweetest MNC ever. Maybe the sweetest with everyone from Misery blog twits to T. Booger State fans throwing the recent post-season in our chowder every meal.

EXCELLENT! I think that way too.

As for an easy schedule?

Games against
Ranked Texas
Ranked Kansas
Ranked Texas Tech
and probably ranked Missouri.
A game at Kyle field, which is a hard place to play.

I’d say our schedule is fair.

If our D-line plays the way they should then that will take all kinds of pressure off of our LB's and DB's and will give them time to get used to the games. Chattanooga is a warm-up and will only help matters with those guys.

At Manhattan
At Kyle
AT Baylor
AT Okie Lite
Tech in Norman

Big 12 Champeeenship in Kansas City

Cincinnati is a weird game as I look at the schedule for some reason.

Biggest concern = that "very good defense" you mentioned. It's hard to win a MNC without an all out dominant outstanding defense. "Very good" may not cut it.

7/21/2008, 05:05 PM
Oh, and even it the D is great, all the stars align, and we play consistently awesome, it takes some help from the gods of fortune and for the injury bug to be busy somewhere else.

I'm glad we play them in Norman.

We have been consistent at beating Tech and they almost got beat last year at Tech. As good as that offense may be we can stop them enough to win and especially at home. The game that scares me is A&M. All of the toughest games I think we get at home with the exception of Texas.

We almost beat them last year? They'd scored 27 by halftime and had the game quite in hand. Had they not chilled in the 2nd half it would have been ugly. Yeah we lost Sam early but the defense looked not well prepared, and we still have the same DC.

I think we beat them this year as well but it ain't gonna be no cakewalk.

The stars must line up for it to happen... a lot of skill, a good schedule, and a little luck.

Seriously... the season will hinge on the linebackers this year... O-Line, D-Line, QB, receivers, RB/HB/TE are all good. Have a reasonable kicker in Stevens and a hotshot joining us in the fall. Punt returns need a little work and I think the secondary will pan out fine after a few warm-up games.

The big question will be the linebackers. Reynolds needs to stay healthy. Austin Box was a machine in high school and his game films were incredible... he'll warm up to the position in the first few games. Balogun (and the other JUCO transfer... can't remember his name) will be a welcome addition. And then there's Keenan... give him a target to hit hard and teach him to tackle and he'll be a threat.

Defense wins championships.

SbOrOiNaEnR
7/21/2008, 08:28 PM
And yes, we also wore Crimson in the RRS in '04 too...BUT...I didn't own one of those dynasty banners in '04, with all the NCs listed on it. That's the key missing ingredient...the fact that the Karmic Gods of Spending will work against me, and I'll have to buy a new one.

I'm not gonna get started on the whole was he in or not thing, because according to the rules in use last year he was not in, but had we not given up a whopping 27 points in one half there would have been no need for overtime or to have lost.

...and certainly we played better the 2nd half, but like I've said on here before when peeps have bragged how we outplayed them in the 2nd half: too bad they got to keep all those points they tallied in the 1st half when we were apparently asleep.

I am aware the pitfalls that can befall someone that speaks badly about some aspect of our team. Being called a nOOb, or my favorite: "bandwagon fan." I have tried to reach a point where I am able to state my case and do so in such a way that I'm not slammed for it, and it helps that I've been here a while now, have a few posts under my belt, and have accumulated a fair amount of good SPEK. Of course to some long-time posters I pale in comparison to them, and to some I am still a comparative nOOb.

Pretty much though the long-time posters are familiar with me now and know what to expect from me. They know I don't think very highly of Venables, and that I'm going to say so, and they know that I will point out bad things without the fog provided by crimson-tinted glasses.

edit...and I might add some peeps have a hard time understanding that you can be critical of the team when necessary and still be a fan.

In fact I find at this point that if I have a squabble with someone about the team it's more likely to be someone new who doesn't know me, and who maybe does have the crimson-tinted glasses snugged down real tight.

If last year's Tech and WV games are any indication of what we have to look forward to this year, it could be a rough 08 season - especially if we get the #s of injures we had last season. There are some really big holes to fill with LBs and in the secondary - I won't be surprised if our games scores look like basketball scores.

There's room for concern admittedly, but I feel pretty good about things. I think in some cases having to replace some guys on defense might be a matter of addition by subtraction.

My big concern is, and peeps prolly get tired of it, is that with the defensive staff we still have in place there is the very real possibility, if history is any indication, that there will be a game or two this year where our defense appears clueless.

The planets have to align and this year they have. That still means that we need plenty of luck. Injuries play a big role in all of this stuff. Remember JW against LSU? We had a great shot in that game, but we were hobbling around.

Tech is going to be big trouble for the next few years. Okie lite is totally unpredictable performance wise. Let's not forget that Missouri is a damned good team.

If we make it through the season and get out schemed in a BCS bowl and get whipped again, I am coming after the OU coaching brain trust with a wiffleball bat. NO MERCY!!!

I, for one, am tired of hearing about a good easy schedule. If we are truly to be the best team in college football; schedule shouldn't matter. You beat who you play no matter who it is. I am hoping for a tough as nails schedule; so when we show up in the title game, we know for sure who we are. TOUGH AS "insert choice here"!!!!!
