From a July 19 interview:

"Whoever is thinking about the shorter term [for withdrawal] is closer to reality. Artificially extending the stay of U.S. troops would cause problems.... As soon as possible, as far as we're concerned... Those who operate on the premise of short time periods in Iraq today are being more realistic.... Artificially prolonging the tenure of US troops in Iraq would cause problems. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes."

Does this significantly help Obama? Does it hurt McCain? Will Bush get al-Maliki back in line before he heads for Crawford?

I say no way Bush EVAR gives in to the idea of a timeline as long as he's in office. He'd rather let someone else deal with the mess, but how do the R's spin this?

From a July 20th article:

Iraqi Premier Steps Back on U.S. Troops Comment

BAGHDAD — On the eve of Senator Barack Obama’s visit to Iraq, its prime minister tried to step back Sunday from comments in an interview in which he appeared to support Mr. Obama’s plan for troop withdrawal.

Well, the Chinese "endorsements" of Clinton back in the 96 election sure helped him...

Maliki's a ******. He seems pretty unappreciative of our efforts in Iraq which is interesting since he wouldn't be in his position if we hadn't overthrown Saddam and done everything we could to make things as easy as possible on their new government (including overlooking the fact that they weren't doing squat).

when we overthrow a country and appoint our own choice for leadership, they better do what daddy tells em.

Problem Solvers often turn to fresh ideas when trying to get things accomplished.

Looks like the guys who've been buttering his bread showed him the butter knife in a semi-threatening way.

They don't have to do what we say. If they're a sovereign government, they're sovereign. He does need to learn to keep his mouth shut and do his negotiating behind the scenes. His comments over the last few weeks have been disrespectful to the Americans who lost their lives to give his country a chance for freedom.

I'd say that looking at the body count of your own Countrymen has to skew your ability to recognize the losses shared by the folks who helped put you into power. Nobody is perfect.

I just watched Lawrence of Arabia yesterday.

So many folks have had a hand in trying to help the folks in the Middle East for years.

The thing is...they can't even get along with folks of the same faith.

We're really getting in deep in Iraq.

I'm saddened everytime I see George Stephanopoulos report on this weeks US Troop loss. I don't think it's disrespectful to want it to stop.

I'd imagine al-Maliki would like it to stop on both sides.

Hopefully whether it's McCain or Obama in office....it will stop.

BTW...

The Taliban are still threatening us.

If ever there was a Country that needed the help that Iraq got...it's Afghanistan.

Malicki was voted for by the Iraqi people in an exceptionally brave act of democracy at the time. I don't think he was Washington's "choice" either....I can't remember the name of the guy that was.

This wasn't taken from the holy grail of information, The Daily Kos, but

The relentless and fervent pro-Obama bias at the Los Angeles Times is nothing new. (For starters, we've reported on it here (http://newsbusters.org/blogs/dave-pierre/2007/12/11/lat-scores-trifecta-obama-oprah-parade), here (http://www.newsbusters.org/node/12486), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10761), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10487), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10464), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10223), here (http://www.newsbusters.org/node/11346), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10975), here (http://newsbusters.org/node/11441), and here (http://newsbusters.org/node/10289).) But a front-page article in today's Times (Sun. July 20, 2008) is simply dishonest. The headline reads, "Iraqi president embraces Obama withdrawal plan." (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-obamatrip20-2008jul20,0,5577713,full.story)
The brute dishonesty is that the Times makes no mention of the fact that a spokesman for the prime minister immediately disputed the story and said comments from Nouri Maliki in a controversial interview (http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,566852,00.html) in Germany's Der Spiegel magazine "were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately." (See CNN's "Iraqi PM disputes report on withdrawal plan," (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/07/19/almaliki.obama/index.html?section=cnn_latest) posted yesterday afternoon (7/19/08). HotAir also reports how Der Spiegel changed a key quote (http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/19/maliki-obamas-16-month-timetable-sounds-good/) in the interview.)
Yet the Times uncritically claimed that Maliki "praised the Democratic presidential candidate's plan for withdrawing U.S. troops over a 16-month period" and published an article that essentially amounts to Obama campaign literature.
Is the Times in the tank for Obama? Absolutely.
