they shipped Eddie to NJ. and i really dislike Carmelo. he's about as vacuous as a human being can be in my view.

i tell you, i really enjoyed watching Eddie play the last 3 years especially. he really showed me a lot with "chemistry" he and Iverson had. there were times when they were only two guys who even gave a S on the court. the stand around until Carmelo gets his 30/beat the Celtics, lose to the Bobcats offense Karl likes to run...was often broken down by Eddie making a cut to the hoop and AI hitting him for a layup. that was some great stuff.

i don't get the Nugs.

the all-knucklehead team is gonna be "Melo", Kenyon Martin, JR Smith (dumb as a bag full of hair), and Kleiza. one other guy.

I don't know if your link's article was before or after the call I heard on the radidio.

Certainly anything can be had for $$$, even a name that is okay, 'cept for the non-visualness of the thing. What would that logo look like?

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but what was your suggestion again?

Literally thousands of people have contemplated this issue publicly, and I have yet to hear a single name that I would have been especially excited about. Even my own suggestion of "Stampede," which I thought was better than "Thunder."

Seriously, I think there are very few great team names available that lend themselves to major league sports these days, and even fewer that make sense for OKC.

On the jazz tip, I would have LOVED the Oklahoma City Blue Devils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_Blue_Devils). It would have kicked ***, been a nod to an amazing jazz heritage that hardly anyone knows about, and could have traded on the scrappy, take-all-comers reputation the Blue Devils had (listen to how the descriptive phrases could be applied to a hoops squad):

Before attaining his majority Lester was recruited by the barnstorming Oklahoma City Blue Devils, the scourge of every band in the Southwest. The Blue Devils thrived on battles of the bands. Their reed section smothered rivals under an overwhelming torrent of sound. They were masters of the riff style. Each section bristled with solo talent. They had taken on and beaten the best bands from Kansas City, even Bennie Moten. Had not the Depression intervened, no other band could have touched them. Beginning in 1930 one star after another had left the blue Devils—Basie, Lips Page, Walter Page, Eddie Durham, Jimmy Rushing—all of them to seek employment in Pendergast's Depression-proof Kansas City...
Too bad Duke already had that name sewn up. Those of you who are Duke haters step outside of that for a minute and imagine the name had never been used before. Woulda been great, and far more authentic than a lot of team names.

For all the doubt surrounding this franchise (small fanbase, etc.) I would think they would try to pick a really great name in order to sell lots of apparel and kind of hedge their bet if they tank on the floor and ticket sales fall off. I really don't think anybody outside of central Oklahoma/Tulsa will buy a single thing with OKC Thunder on it. Had they gone with Outlaws, Copperheads, or anything of that nature I think they could have had a better shot at returning a profit when things get tough. Think of the KC Chiefs or the Dallas Cowboys, if they had been named the KC Corn or the Dallas Sunshine would anybody outside of KC or Dallas really adopt them as their team?

I believe those ratings are based on per capita. Could be wrong but that is what I was lead to believe.

BigRedJed
7/21/2008, 07:33 PM
In 16 days, the team got 16,000+ individual season ticket requests. Most of these were from people who want two and more tickets. It appears ticket demand won't be a problem, at least for the time being.

During season one, they will almost assuredly be a top five team in attendance, limited only by the size of the building as it compares to, for instance, the Palace at Auburn Hills.

I wish we had named our team after pants like New York did. That is way less ghey. Or maybe we could have called ourselves the Oklahoma City Oklahomans like Houston did. That isn't ghey. Perhaps we could have called ourselves the Oklahoma City Country Music, since many country music stars come from Oklahoma. What if we decided to call teh team the Sooner State ____ instead of Oklahoma City _____. How ghey would that have been? What about the Oklahoma Rivers, since we have rivers in Oklahoma. How about we call it Oklahoma Illusions? The Oklahoma Williams? The Oklahoma Machine Shoppers. The Oklahome Airplanes? All of the above approaches were used by other teams and apparently they were not ghey at all.

I challenge you to find one name in pro sports that is not ghey sounding, if you go by the assumption that you are hearing it for the very first time. News flash...they all sound like WNBA teams. All of them. 100%. Every single one!!!!!! It is the repetition that changes the perception.

Good point.

I will say, however, that Stampede is better than Thunder. Think bison rather than horses or cattle. Coulda had a no-brainer, kickass mascot too. Plus, the logo could be cool. Not that these are especially spectacular, bit it could be pulled off.

It's the Basingstoke (http://www.bstokebison.co.uk) hockey club in the UK. A few years back they changed to the Bison from their original mascot, the Beavers. The mascot kept tripping on its own fur and freezing its lips to the ice.

The Trenton Thunder (Class AA; Eastern League) have announced a special promotion designed to ease the pain for fans of the NBA's Seattle Supersonics, who will move to Oklahoma City for the upcoming season. According to Oklahoma City media outlet KOCO-TV, the city's relocated NBA team will be named the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2008-09 season.

The Trenton Thunder are now offering a complimentary ticket to any Seattle Supersonic fan. To receive a free ticket, fans must stop by the box office at Waterfront Park and be wearing their Seattle Supersonic hat, jersey, t-shirt or other merchandise. Each Seattle fan will receive one free ticket based on availability.

"We just want to help ease the pain for Sonics fans worldwide and offer them a night of fun with the Thunder here in Trenton," said Thunder General Manager Brad Taylor. "We can't blame Oklahoma City for choosing the best nickname in all of sports and certainly wish them well."

Thoughts on logo/uni concept:

1- OKLAHOMA CITY together is a little cramped on the black uni. Put "Oklahoma" above the number and "City" below it.

2- The block "O K C" is too large, as much as I love the "O" thunder look on it. Interlock it and make it more compact.

3- The colors need to be more neutral. No orange-like or reddish colors. I personally wouldn't mind the old Sonic green, but not with yellow, or it'd be too Sonic-like in appearance. How about white, black and green? Green minimal, emphasis on black and white. Another color to add in? Silver.

4- Love the "T" logo on the shorts. Might as well be a mini Thor hammer for the kiddos to wave during opponent free throws. Speaking of Thor/Zeus...

5- Thunder nipple a no-no.

6- Obviously thunder has cloudy skies, but can the cloud creatively resemble a certain state's outline? You know, a little bolt pointed left, a few clouds around the bottom right...

A very good fandom effort!

I think you misunderstood me, Mix. These logos I have posted are not designs the team is even considering (so far as I know). There are designers (some professional, some hobbyists) out there who do this for fun or simply just for the experience. Check out http://icethetics.blogspot.com/ for a good hockey example. A lot of these guys create logos and uniforms for their fantasy teams.

I posted these cause 1) they look pretty good and 2) help us all conceptualize what so far has been a pretty bland name in most of our minds.

Actually, it would be cool if the owner negotiated with an Oklahoma tribe and named the team for them. Then, when the PC nazis descended, the team could say, Hold it, we have a permission. suc it.

Oklahoma City Comanche would be very cool. The Lords of the Plains. Unbeaten in fair fights. And its evocative of our state's heritage. And it would p1ss off a lot of people who really would have no business being offended.

ENID PLAINSMEN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES!

Seriously, if we are looking to represent our state's Native American heritage (which I think is a great idea), isn't "Thunderbirds" a really good choice? It's not going to offend anyone, it's unique, there's a built-in mascot. On top of all that, thunderbirds in mythology are just bada*s:

Depending on the people telling the story, the Thunderbird is either a singular entity or a species. In both cases,it is intelligent, powerful, and wrathful. All agree that one should go out of one's way to keep from getting thunderbirds angry.

The Oklahoma City NBA team has officially applied for the following trademark rights for a name for the new team.

The names were filed with the US Patent and Trademark office.

After seeing the names, the Patent office probably closed early due to laughter.

The names applied for are:

The Baron.

(As in Baron wasteland. Not only is baron uppity in tough times, it's dumb.)

The Bison.

(Was hippo taken?)

Energy.

(If you think illustrating thunder would be difficult, try illustrating an entire field.)

Marshalls.

(Festus for mascot. Sounds dated.)

Thunder.

(Dark cloud image is the worst of the lot.)

Wind.

(Gas is NOT taken).

If this is the best they can do, it makes you wonder about drafting players, doesn't it.

Mike Dowler lived right down the street from me. It might as well have been Roger Staubach, for all I cared. The Wings were frigging awesome. If you were a kid living in Wichita, that is.

I put Norman's son in the hospital during a game. Oops. I know a ton of those guys. Boy could Kim Roentvedt(sp) drink. All day, every day that man could put them away.

Nothing like trolling the coliseum. Seemed a lot bigger then. Finally getting to actually play there was pretty cool.

I don't understand the whole Barons thing. Does that have some significance that I don't know about?

I had a cousin who played for the Whehawks (sp?) and tried out for the Wings...

I think the interest in that name is specifically tied to "oil barons." Personally, it seems to me like that would be a needlessly cocky one that could backfire, should oil and gas fall on hard times at some point. Also, it might be a little too much knife-twisting in Seattle's general direction.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to fit OKC at all anyway, too uppity or something. If they can't/won't use Drillers, go with Oilers then. It's currently not being used, in this country at least.

That was some seriously weak sauce there. Way to play up what was reported on the Oklahoman's web site earlier in the day.

Because of the relationship between the Oklahoma City and Tulsa teams, Bennett hinted the D-League team's name and colors may change for the sake of being "more in alignment" with the NBA team. He said the 66ers will operate under their current name next season and he said the 66ers' front office staff will be retained....or, just call the OKC team the 66'ers & keep the color scheme intact. :pop:

We'd have to be the 67'er's, 'cuz this one goes to eleven. It's one better, right?

I don't know if this means anything, but the OKC NBA team is setting up shop in Leaderhsip Square. As of this morning they are painting the official team store in Sage Green and Brown.
I hope they don't go with the Thunder. Only because I want to see Mark Rodgers with more egg on his face. That guy annoys the crap out of me. Any guy who looks like Rosie O'Donnell shouldn't be working in sports.
