Now all we need is a logo & colors (blue & silver, if memory serves me correctly).

EDIT: nba.com/thunder is a 404.

I suspect someone thought they could slide the schedule references and links under the radar, but I also have to think we're close to an announcement. I'm sure the media up there will run with this, which may force the timetable forward some.

But why the NBA programmers didn't park this on their development server until the announcement is beyond me.

Can we have a chubby pom squad called the Thunder Thighs?

Oooh, and can Garth sing "And the Thunder Roooolled!" as the team is introduced?

AC/DC's THUNDERSTRUCK for the introduction!

Garth won't sing in Oklahoma. He seems to have made that much obvious in the past.
Not that it really matters to me. :D

Any chance the link is a red herring?

Morning update:

http://www.nba.com/thunder was changed to http://www.nba.com/oklahomacity

Schedule now changed....

http://www.nba.com/schedules/?team=oklahomacity

http://www.nba.com/schedules/?team=thunder no longer works.

the link to "Thunder" (http://www.nba.com/thunder) is still active here http://www.nba.com/schedules/national_tv_schedule/index.html

They had changed all of the links by the middle of the afternoon yesterday.

Also, that TV schedule is a bummer. One... ...ONE nationally televised game. Against New Orleans. I'm guessing they chose that game for the intrigue factor. By comparison, the Hornets have ten nationally televised games according to my cursory look-through.

The same thing happened to the Hornets when they played here. I'm guessing it is a result of combining an expectedly bad team with a perceived "unexciting" market from a national perspective. Guess we'll all just need to prove them wrong.

:les: C'MON THUNDER!! WIN!!!

Well, the Hornets are a really good team. The Thunder or whatever they are will suck next season.

Me? Oooooookay. I'll chalk that up as yet another nickname I've acquired online. It's not used here, but the my aka of choice on other boards (typically hockey) is Mr. Know-It-All. I'm sure some of my detractors elsewhere would get a chuckle out of "nosferatu". :D

Srsly, though, I hate the name "Thunder". Sounds like a little league name. I also hate all nicknames that don't end in "s", except for "Jazz". I just hate that Utah gets that name despite their lack of jazz.

The NBA (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=National+Basketball+Association&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) filed trademark rights to six nicknames for Oklahoma City (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Oklahoma+City+NBA+Team&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION)’s franchise in July, according to the U.S. (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=United+States&CATEGORY=COUNTRY) patent and trademark office. Thunder was one of six names filed. The others were: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls and Wind.

My God, they all sucked.

I don't particularly care for it, but it is better than any of the apparent finalists. Your idea of Drillers though was the mack daddy wiener, that should have been it.

Soonermagik

Trust me, it's going to be Thunder. I work in Leadership Sq where their office is located and I saw them bringing in boxes with OKC thunder on the side.

It's possible they could try and trick us, but I doubt it. Heck, they've had forever to get the name and colors out. I think the organization has done a **** poor job so far.

TheHumanAlphabet
9/4/2008, 08:21 AM
The fact they choose Thunder because they could make some sound at the beginning of the game is stupid, just as their choice of colors - orange, but not too orange or too red for the sunset...God! this is a sports team not some flag symbolism...

"I'm an LA Laker, oooh, I'm skeered with all that thunder and noise..."

Now that could work if they played out doors and saw some April or May supercells bearing down on them...

Maybe for some people, but I doubt I'm ever going to like it. My dislike may grow into tolerance, but the logo certainly doesn't help.

"Thunder" just isn't a major league name.

Harry Beanbag
9/16/2008, 05:46 PM
I've been paying attention to a lot of other big league nicknames lately, and Thunder isn't anywhere near the worst. Angels? It doesn't get any gheyer than that.

BigRedJed
9/16/2008, 10:55 PM
Yeah, I agree. This whole episode has made me realize just how many crappy names and logos there are in major league sports, overall. Gives credibility to the "history and winning makes the name/logo cool" school of thought. But I also agree with the people who say we shouldn't be shooting for "way better than the bottom 10% of sports team nicknames/logos."

Harry Beanbag
9/17/2008, 01:03 AM
Oh, don't get me wrong, the Thunder logo actually is the worst one out there. ;)

Look at all the generic names we've seen the last few years: Thunder, Titans, Texans, Bobcats, Panthers, Jaguars - a cornucopia of bland and vanilla nicknames. I'm starting to think it's deliberate.

Yea, Texans? Come on. Bobcats? You're right, generic.
