The ole 15 year anniversary is coming up on the 31st and the wife has been nagging me on what I want for a gift. After having so many health related issues over the past year, I thought that having a Blu Ray DVD player would be kinda cool to watch movies on in the bedroom.

I was pretty much ready to by a Panasonic to go with my Panasonic TV, however, the Sony Playstation 3 gets just as good reviews as most of the stand alone Blu Rays. I do not play video games, but my sister's have teenagers that come up from the north and south, so I figured this might be a good buy to give the kiddies something to do when the adults are doing there own thing. Kind of a best of both worlds scenario. Also, playing some TW 09 and some NCAA 09 is sorta inviting to me.

Any opinions on pricing, quality, speed on any of the Blu Ray players?

I was going to get the stand-alone blu-ray and the salesman convinced me to get the ps3 - it was the same price. I have a 14 year old son, so he was happy. Works great.

But if you put it in your bedroom, you may be sleeping on the couch when the kids are visiting.

The thing that looks really nice about the PS3 is that it seems really compact. I can easily move it from the bedroom to the living room.

BTW, this is probably a really stoopid question but I assume that the PS3 game come out in HD on the TV too?

Can you tell I'm not even close to being a gamer, heh?

PS3 has lots of amazing options. It's not a gmaing console that plays Blu Rays. It's an entertainment console that plays video games.

yeah, it's HD, but you have to have the HDMI cable or components cables running between them. The old school hook up won't give you HD.

Do you have an HDTV? What size? If it's not 40" or larger, you may not see much benefit of going blu-ray over regular DVD.

Oh, and as for this topic... if you wanna spend a lot of money on a television, a lot of money on a disc player and a lot more money on the discs, then go ahead and Blu Ray things up.

Or, for a lot cheaper, you can stick with your cheaper telly, cheaper DVD player and cheaper DVDs... or if you're extremely cheap, VHS tapes and VCRs.

It is not worth the switch right now, unless you need to compensate and show off to others how incredibly techy and wealthy you are.

Save yer cash. Its gonna be a tough ol' economy for awhile.

"Not worth it" is a completely subjective term, and your willingness to apply it as a blanket statement is uncalled-for here.

So, neener.

As for the original topic:

I've tried to convince myself that one of the newer Panasonics is worth exchanging my PS3 (or moving it to the bedroom) for the bitstreamed DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD, but I can't do it. The bitstreaming is the only thing the new Pannys do that the PS3 won't, and PS3s will play SACDs, which the Pannys won't-and DTHD and DTS-HD MA output as linear PCM is theoretically identical to the bitstream.

Surprised no one brought this up yet...

Buy the PS3 because it can be updated. They are still adding feature playback stuff to Blu-Rays so if you get a stand alone player, you are pretty much stuck with the software that comes installed on it. If you get the PS3 however, you can get the update when they add the next "cool" feature to blu-ray discs.

Plus, you can rent HD movies online with your PS3.

Nah, most BD players have firmware that's upgradeable over ethernet.

Sony's just really good about updating the PS3. Actually, as I hear tell, they built it to be as full-functioned as they could, then deliberately crippled it via firmware until the standalones caught up. Notice they didn't enable Dolby TrueHD decoding until a standalone did it, they didn't enable DTS-HD MA decoding until a standalone did it, etc.

Well, if you have a wireless home network, updating your ps3 should still be much easier. Plus having a media hub hooked up to your home entertainment system is cool. Through in the web browser, and I think it is still the best BD player on the market.

They may have crippled it, but like I said, you know it will be able to do everything in the future.

That way, if there's a fw that might brick your system, you can hold off on the dl for a couple of days. The first couple of days of fw 2.41 was borked and it bricked a couple of boxes.

Just an fyi for those that give a ****.

I pulled the trigger a month or so ago on a "system." I bought the Mitsubishi 52" LCD with the "whatever the hell it's called engine that kicks some ***". The reason I picked it over the Samsung and Sony was the screen. My living room has 5 big windows, and we don't do curtains in the country. All the other screens had major glare issues.

I bought a PS3 (40GB model) but I just do movies on it. Bought some HDMI cables for everything too.

I bought one of those power source dealios to plug everything into (which worked great during a huge lightning hit we took a couple weeks ago). All I had to do was reset it and everything was groovy.

I bought the Bose Lifestyle48? sound system. Yeah, I know, overpriced, but I dig the Bose sound and look. Sue me. My Bose noise cancelling headphones are still one of my smartest investments at $300.

All told about $6,500 give or take.

Ordered HD with the HDDVR from Dish, and now when I watch the 20 minutes or so of TV that I watch daily it's damn clear and sounds damn good. It'll get a lot more use during football season.

I's happy.

By the way, I don't know if it can be said that "most" blu-ray players have ethernet ports since it's not even a requirement for profile 1.0 or 1.1. When I was shopping for one in May, a lot of them didn't. At some point they all will have them in order to be BD-Live compliant. The one I got does have an ethernet port (they've labeled it 'BD-Live ready' - we'll see) and can be updated via the Internet which is nice. I also just got a nice Onkyo receiver that decodes DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD. The new HD audio formats are highly recommended. I didn't think I would care about the audio as much but it is a noticeable improvement over regular DD or DTS.

Panasonic DMP-BD30
Philips BDP9000
Philips BDP7200
LG BH-100

Yet another way that HD DVD was superior. ;)

7/17/2008, 03:54 PM
yeah, until BD-Live is widespread, the ethernet port really isn't needed - firmware can typically be updated by burning a CD. And even when BD-Live is everywhere it's arguable about whether I'll use ethernet for anything other than firmware updates. The online stuff for Bd-Live doesn't really interest me much.

I'm in the market for a BDP right now and have done some research on this.

The PS3 really is a pretty good deal. There are really only a few reasons not to get one:

*No multi-channel analog audio outs. This is the biggie for me. I'm (my wife is) not quite ready to upgrade my AVR which doesn't have HDMI. Which means if I want to get all of the slick new uncompressed audio codecs I need a player that will decode them internally and send them to my AVR over analog.

*No IR remote port. Harmony remotes rule. Seriously, if you're reading this thread you probably want one, whether you know it or not. The PS3 doesn't play nice with Harmony remotes. There are workarounds, but, they're workarounds.

*Fan noise. The PS3 has a reputation for being loud at times. This may or may not bug you. I don't have first hand experience, so this may be overblown.

If these things don't apply to/bother you, than the PS3 is really hard to beat.

Don't know about the fan noise because I don't have one but the other reasons contributed to why I didn't go that route. However, Sony just announced that they're dropping the 40GB model and replacing it with an 80GB model for the same price ($399) in September. Score!
