View Full Version : Oklahoman sportswriter says we're a bunch of electronic thugs

well, not expressly, but he certainly thinks boards like this one are an anathema and should be detested and ignored by reasonable fans.

Methinks [he] dost protest too much. Perhaps he is motivated by his fear the digital domain is quickly making print media obsolete. Seasoned by a bit of "I get paid to write about college sports so my opinion is the only one that matters." Take a peek at his rant and let us know what you think.

Bingo. i think there's a lot of that going on.

journalists need to re-assert the social "need" for their profession (i.e. whether in the specialized practice of journalism as a "profession" or expertise or even the 4th Estate idea--moving beyond strictly sports)...

while the net suffers from lack or no real means of verification...the whole ball game has changed. the days of centralized, "professional" media production is not what it was.

the new technology, for better *and* worse, makes everyone a potential producer of media content....not merely a consumer.

That's pretty funny, considering his own paper once quoted something I posted on this very board. Yes, a lot of what gets posted is innakerut, but there's at least as many things I hear about online that I wind up seeing in the Oklahoman...2 or 3 days later.

yeah, that's the other thing. Minus the net, i know most of the Denver area radio hosts ("sports journalists") and local college beat writers might actually have to *go back to working for it*. radio people especially, at least here.

i follow (but don't in any way, shape, or form pull for) CU sports since i've followed the Big 8 my whole life....and i don't even pay attention to the local media. it's mostly crap-azz platitudes or as you say rehashed stuff from a couple days ago off the boards.

He says people who are frequent message boards are no better than people who look at Internet porn sites.

Somebody wanna Venn diagram those two groups for me? I think it might look something like this:

I noticed that too. wassup with that?

All good sportswriters are high school ex-jocks with drinking problems and three ex-wives. They should wear sportscoats with golf shirts underneath. And stained khaki pants over shoes with run-down heels. And, ideally, they should wear a hat of somekind. They should drive klunker land-yachts that smoke. And they should smoke themselves. Winstons or Tiparillos.

Think Walter Matthau in the original Bad News Bears

Wasn't Trammel the one arguing with Traber and Eschbach by claiming 90% of the people out there sided with Jenny Carlson because everyone loves mainstream media and it's not fair to pick on them and make them the news story.

Wasn't Trammel the one arguing with Traber and Eschbach by claiming 90% of the people out there sided with Jenny Carlson because everyone loves mainstream media and it's not fair to pick on them and make them the news story.

He did defend Jenni, like he was big brother rescuing little sister in one of his columns.

I won't complain about new media like message boards - it's a good way to mainstream information for those who want constant updates. However, I think we can all agree that some forums of media are more reliable than others.

Newspaper columnist or blogger? Columnist is more reliable.

Television newscast or sports radio talk program? Television.

Fansite message boards or established newspaper? Paper.

Random guy that goes by "Darth Husker" or common sense? Hmmm...

However, to say that one's opinion is more deserving of mainstream reading is kind of... what's the word? B!tchy? Self-centered? Condescending? In any event, that's probably why we're all upset at Berry - he seems to think that message board opinions are less deserving of online readership than his blog, than his column, than his video blog (all of which are online, just like message boards). Come on, Berry Tramel. You know you're watching the "peep show" too. Don't try to pin it all on us.

Apparently Tramel thinks his sh!t don't stink. What a tool.Yhis is the same guy that said OU losing Bomar was like the Titanic hitting an iceberg,OU was going DOWN.He made the same crack when AD went down. The stupidest piece of trash was calling Holiway the worst passer in OU 'bone history. For the record Jamelle ranks 6th in passing efficency in OU history.

Viking Kitten
7/13/2008, 08:23 PM
Tramel, in his little rant, is squatting down and taking a big, hairy dump on one of the ideals any credible journalist should hold most dear: the notion of the marketplace of ideas. Good journalists welcome more voices, because the truth arises from competition. If "Meatrocket4TX" is spreading innerweb lies, it's Berry's job to uncover the truth. If professional journalists aren't doing their jobs, it's to us hold them accountable.

Welcome to the 21st Century life in the Fourth Estate, Berry. Ya putz.
