News anchor arrested on DUI complaint

A Tulsa television news anchor was arrested Friday on complaints of hit-and-run and driving under the influence, according to an arrest report.

Jerry Giordano, longtime news reporter and weekend anchor at KTUL Channel 8, was arrested at 6:20 p.m. and booked into the Tulsa Jail, the report states.

He posted $6,000 in bonds and was released at 9:54 p.m., according to the Tulsa Jail's Web site.

KTUL station manager Carlton Houston said he couldn't comment on whether Giordano would be disciplined.

"This is a pretty serious situation, but I can't comment further," he said. "It's a personnel issue."

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the area of the 1400 block of East 35th Place in reference to a hit-and-run and driving under the influence. Residents in the area said several vehicles and two street signs were struck by a car traveling in the neighborhood.

One area resident told police that he heard a collision from inside his home and chased a white 1992 BMW driven by Giordano for two blocks, until the car "crashed in a yard," the report states.

While being interviewed by police, Giordano reportedly told officers, "I have been drinking beer this afternoon" and "I know I am drunk," the arrest report states. Officers also reported that Giordano asked several times "What would it take to make this go away?"

Giordano, 46, has worked at KTUL since 1996, according to the station's Web site.

His court date stemming from the felony hit-and-run complaint and the misdemeanor DUI is set for Friday, according to the jail's Web site.

Jerry Giordano, you're a piece of crap.

I suspect he will go away just like CNN's Richard Quest has gone away.

Jerry Giordano, you're a piece of crap.

What is it with these guys? Until last year, there was a crap AM talk guy who used to be on KRMG named Michael Delgiorno...or something like that. This guy loved to rail against the evile of Indian casinos yet was caught on surveillance video at the MCN casino on Riverside stealing chips from players.

Didn't Cherokee Ballard (OKC) have something similar happen to her? Maybe that's why she disappeared from KOCO for awhile and then ended up on KFOR.

And don't forget Randy Renner....

Cherokee Ballard had cancer. It was a big deal at the time. She was pretty public about it, too. She lost all of her hair and went on camera telling her story and how she had to find a wig. She talked about how the American Indian people are very proud of their hair so losing it was hard to deal with. She really shared the daily struggles and all the things those of us that have never had to deal with it might not really be aware of.

Looks like she beat it down, though. Stupid cancer.

Now I'm not saying she never crapped her pants but I don't think that's why she was gone for a while.

Cherokee's disappearance had nothing to do with her cancer or the DUI from a brazilan years ago. It has everything to do with KOCO's propensity for getting rid of its talented veterans when they get too expensive and replacing them with younger, cheaper, eye candy. (See Tyler Suiters for a more recent example.) The cancer came about in 1999 and she worked all the way through it.

Is he the experienced veteran or the eye candy?

It seems like all the news stations do this. People disappear from one channel and then pop up on another channel here or in Tulsa, and vice versa up there. The TV news in this state--along with many other endeavors--is very inbred.

In Tyler's case, he came on board in 1999, and helped get KOCO's ratings out of the gutter. He was well respected among a profession of people who love to eat their own. He was repaid for this in May with a boot in his a**.

While it's true that some of that is just the reality of the industry, KOCO is notorious. For their parent company Hearst Argyle, it's 100 percent about profit. The quality of their newscast is completely beside the point.

Yeah, I'm not seeing how that's different than any other local news program. I don't bother watching anymore. If it's important, I figure there will be a thread about it on here. I'm dead serious. How pathetic is that?

It's not just the local news, either. The morning "news" shows on Headline News, Fox News, etc. are completely unwatchable. A bunch of dipwads sitting around making stupid jokes about every story. Earthquake in China! Tee hee! Good Morning America has more gravitas. Hell, Rick and Brad have more gravitas. Walter Kronkite must be rolling in his grave. (He's dead, right?)

I'd make it a part of my contract at the station that they had to get a new chair...

Just saying. Oh and the comment about Tulsey running off good people. Yeah, Ch 2 ran off Jeff Lazalier for stupid Dan Threkeld. Not that edumacation means anything in talent pool TV, but run off a OU degreed Meteorologist for a non-meteorology degree hack from 'Bamer (I think)...

VK, the media industry on television is especially cruel to the aged - especially women. The worst part is you can't say "age discrimination!" in court, because TV depends on pretty faces to bring you the news.

As for this guy, I've seen the cop report. This guy is probably going to be gone shortly, if not already. TV personalities rely on their faithful audiences to keep their careers going, so losing crediblity or losing face (like a DUI/shat job would do) is going to end this guy in the Tulsa market.

The smug mug says it all: "My career's over and I know it, even in this drunken state of mind."

I agree. Moreover, unfortunately for the ladies, old man anchors appear "distinguished and wise." Old lady anchors, although equally wise and experienced, end up getting the bootinski because they look, well, "old."

proving yet again. Life ain't fair.

Just so I don't sound and look like a hardcore Rosie O'Donnell leftist butchy femnazi feminist, I should go even further with that.

News anchors are public figures in their markets and as such, have no private life that can't be made public.

Think of other media types out there - radio disc jockeys, newspaper reporters/columnists, television producers, bloggers. The distinctive feature of the news anchor and on-air personalities of television is that not only do you have a name and voice, but also a face.

In Internet media like blogging, you have no name, face, voice etc. Complete anonymity to some degree.

In print media, you have a face with columnists who print their mug, but with all others, just a name.

In radio media, you have a name and a voice to recognize, but no face.

In television, you are out there for the audience to see, hear and associate with. Thus, your audience will judge you on your personality in your private and public life alike. Not fair, perhaps, but reality.

As such, television relies on likeable, reliable personalities for their shows and the news teams to become public figures that people want to watch on a daily basis. They want people that the public and the station can trust and rely on for their information and to be there when the broadcast starts.

So anyways, long story short, he's probably gonna get fired. Television's tough for everyone, not just the aging women out there.
