View Full Version : City of Seattle to settle with Sonics

News conference at 7 PM Oklahoma time (the judge in the trial was supposed to rule at 8 PM CDT).

They have been in very intense negotiation since it became apparent that the Sonics' attorneys had administered a beatdown of epic proportions in court. The city began negotiating in earnest, however Sonics' OKC-based owners would not settle until the Howard Schultz case against them was dropped.

He has agreed to end his case, and this clears the way for a settlement, which has now been signed and will be announced shortly.

Or, at least, that's what I have been told.

Awesome. This clears the way for them to move here for next season.

Looks like Dio (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2329235#post2329235) got it to the board before I did. I'm leaving this thread over here though, at least for a while, as a general interest thread.

On the surface, yes.

Granted, I never assume anything until the ink is dried on the dotted line.

You've stolen my line. I have been saying the exact same thing for some time, but for the first time ever, I now believe this is a done deal. The ink literally HAS dried on the dotted line on this one, at least as far as the settlement goes.

Why do you hate the man on the silver mountain?

Well, there was that album he did with Pat Boone...

The Sonics = Obama

BigRedJed
7/2/2008, 05:48 PM
That makes absolutely no sense. Unless you're talking about them being half-black. The Sonics do have a disproportionate number of white stiffs on their team.

Wow. My information about the Schultz suit was not correct. It's still kicking. They get a refund from Seattle if he prevails. Guess that shows how much the partners think of that suit. Like Clay suggested, it's "baseless."

Sweet. Now I can add OKC to the list of cities to which I can look to relocate. :)

The best part is that now people going to the UW game this season can wear their OKC "Sonics" gear around town. :D

So how long before we can "steal" the Seahawks? NFL would be better. But still this is pretty sweet.

Yeah, cause nothing says "please drop kick me in the fun bag" like OKC Sonics gear worn around in Washington.

SoonerInKCMO
7/2/2008, 07:36 PM
Yeah, I caught quite a few games on local TV while I was up there... the suckitude was strong. Nobody there seemed to care though. People were more interested in spring ball for the craptacular Mariners and the off-season shenanigans of Seahawk players than in the Sonics. Whether that was the case before it was apparent that the Sonics' days in Seattle were numbered, I can't say.

Well it won't quite be OKC Sonics gear. Apparently Seattle will get to keep the colors and name as part of the settlement. That doesn't mean I won't be wearing OKC (insert name here) stuff in Seattle :D

As someone who doesn't really care one way or another I will say that I don't think either side in this melodrama acted appropriately.

Packing up some alderwood smoked salmon at Pike's Place back in May, the fishmonger asks me where I'm shipping it to...

I reply, "Oklahoma".

Without hesitation he blurts, "You want me to make room in this box for our basketball team?"

I quietly said, "Sure, why not?"

He immediately responded, "I'll just put the ice on the fish, the team already stinks."

Fuggin Seattle. I love those over-caffeinated, cynical, pale, computer/fleece-wearin' lumberjacks and bushy-pitted orcabeauties. Truly I do and I can't wait for September!

Carry on.

Posted on their forum as "ClayBennett":

Come on palefolks, you really thought a group from OKC would pay all those ducats to keep their team in Wet-town? Call me a liar all you want, I'll call you naive. My guess is I have been to more freakin M's games than most of you have been to your former NBA team's games. If the ballot box was whiney forum posts, you'd still have your team, by a landslide.

Love your city but our own culture you lumberjacks and fishmongers continue to berate is here, you just haven't looked very hard. Come visit, and while you are here you might want to take in an NBA game.

Dayum, that was fun. Thanks for teh linkage, Bri!

Something that irks me about his article is the "least diverse" market in the NBA comment. That's simply wrong. It takes about five minutes with Google to find some census data that shows Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Portland and even Seattle have a lower percentage of minorities than OKC. Guess he was just too lazy to try to not be a hack.

Because we're not delusional?

The first sign of being delusional is going around stating "we're not delusional."

Kinda like how all racists start their racist rants with "I've got tons of (insert your favorite ethnic group here) friends...

Bigotry comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. In this case, dude reveals that he is a bigot who is making the same lazy-minded, uninformed assumptions the rest of the country does that Oklahoma is only populated by a bunch of rednecks.

And therefore, our grand quality of life, low cost of living, ridiculously non-existant traffic issues, open spaces, unique Chihooly/Red Earth/Noodling culture, etc...

Yeah, we're all rednecks...keep believin it. Please.

So Bennett has to pay 75 million to leave, but who gets that money? Does it go to the city so it can be pissed away? Season ticket holders who put up with that ****? Fart joke?

Imagine the possibilities!

Grab 10 fans at random and bring them down the court for halftime, wheel out an aquarium full of catfish, and tell 'em to go noodling.
