Either of the first two explanations seem plausible. The rest, not so much. I really don't know much about what happened, other than lots of devastation in an area with not a whole lot of people. If it happened today, you could bet that we would know almost immediately what happened due to the vast numbers of satellites and such. But there were no such observational tools back then...and doing 'forensics' 100 years later is fraught with all kinds of difficulties. But it seems to me that it was probably a space object of some sort. There is evidence that we've been hit with much larger space debris in the long history of the earth (like possibly this (http://www.prlog.org/10002352-super-crater-discovered-in-australia.html))...so I don't think thats out of the realm of plausibility. A huge massive eruption of some sort may be possible, but I think less so given that we don't really have a whole lot of evidence of such a large scale eruption happening in the past.
