that dress up like Lance Freakin' Armstrong. They ride their 10-speeds out here in the hills by where I live, averaging about 5 mph, and take up 1/2 the 2 lane road. Makes me crazy. And WHY must they wear gawdy spandex from head to toe? One friend claims that it's the little butt pad in the seat of the pants that make the whole costume worthwhile. But I digress.

Bicycle helmets. Every little kid (that invariably have last names for first names these days) wears these dorky helmets. We didn't have bicycle helmets growing up and didn't need 'em. In fact, it would probably be worth and *** whoopin' if you wore one. I guess I understand why they wear them out on the roads.

And this story about a BEAR ATTACK makes me realize that they have added value. (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20080629/Grizzly.Attack/)

...the girl was fortunate to be wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head.

This is why I don't ride my bike in the wilds of Alaska where sow bears have recently been harassing people......

For that matter, I don't ride a bike at all, but good grief.

The brightly colored jerseys help one avoid becoming a hood ornament.

The chamois in the shorts is more for sweat issues than for padding, but it also pads. Your pelvic bones are on the saddle. If it's not comfy, you have the wrong saddle.

On average, a cyclist has a wreck every 2500 miles. On that basis, I'm average.

Look for more cyclists as gas prices rise.

**** cyclists. Seriously. They want to be given the same rules of the road, while selectively choosing which to follow, such as red lights, ride of way, etc. Based on my experience if a car and a bicycle are involved in a accident, unless the driver is drunk, all of the blame should be laid at the feet of the cyclist. Like I said, **** 'em. If you don't like them in Oklahoma, try dealing with them on major city streets. I'm sure there are responsible, good cyclists that don't act like I'm an ******* for having the tenacity to walk on public pedestrian walkway, but they most certainly are in the minority.

They might. And...I read an article in a medical publication, years ago, which stated that prolonged periods of riding ON the seat sometimes causes impotence (Limposis Peckeronis) due to crushing of nerves and blood vessels in the "Crura" (See: Bulb.) If you still don't understand the terminology, see a ho. She will point out the aforementioned for only a modest fee.
I immediately sold my 26" Schwinn, red, with playing cards attached to make a neat sound when strummed by the spokes, and haven't set nether parts on a bicycle saddle since. I hated to see Ol' Red go, as it was a gift for my 11th Birthday only three weeks before.
Still, I had plans, big plans, for later, sooooo...

Most of that could be said with regard to motorcyclist. Lane markers and highway shoulders are merely suggestions.

As for cyclists, the ones in Norman are pretty good about obeying the same rules as cars (stop signs/light, etc.). It is a little annoying when one takes up an entire lane for 2.5 miles on Robinson when there is a nice blacktop path 10 feet away. In any event, proper clothing are essential. You wouldn't wear a suit and tie to go deer hunting any more than you would were bagging clothes cycling.

I don't mind taking a bike out every once in a while but I have to agree.

Here in DC, the jerks think they own the road. What makes me even more angry are the darn scooters. Those guys are as bad as bikes. They go from being a vehicle to a pedestrian at their convenience. They'll come up on a light, jump onto the sidewalk and act like a pedestrian to cross the crosswalk. Bikes do it too. Both come up so fast and so unexpectedly that a car couldn't possibly see or predict them to enter the crosswalk.

What really ticks me off are the "share the road" bike clubs who organize in large groups and block major interesections as a protest. What a great way to show you belong on the road....

I also don't like the motorcycles that squeeze between cars. I just don't think they realize how dangerous that can be. If I see them coming I'll give the room but generally they're hard to see coming and I kind of consider my entire lane as fair game for me. If I don't see them and I happen to move over to the far edge of my lane, well, sorry it isn't my fault.

I have wrecked already wrecked once in the last couple of months, and had one near wreck with a vehicle that did not yeild.

They are pretty important, and have been proven to save lives. If you live in a hilly are where it sounds like there is not a lot of traffic go around them.

No big deal. Your hate is unwarrented.

You could just drive by them at a normal speed and not be an ***.

Just recently bought a decent road bike. Have done a little mountain biking down in the Canyon, and it's worth the trip to put a little money into some padded shorts just to keep your junk from getting assaulted. Has to be spandex, cause any other kind of material doesn't keep your junk in one place. I've pretty much given up just biking anywhere, and have only had the road bike out three times since a lady got squashed dead on an I-40 access road here locally. Pretty tough road bike group around here, and she was one that was well known in that group. Bright colors are just that, for you have a better chance of getting seen.

I ride all over Norman and go offroad, jump curbs, whatever I need to do to stay out of traffic. I would love to get a road bike for both fun rides and a triathlon one of these days, but the 2-lane "bike path" roads in Norman are frightening. I would be safer on a crotchrocket running red lights.

I see alot of cyclists in Norman on my weekend runs at around 6:00 a.m. when there is very little traffic....of course, it only takes one.

OMG! the cyclist and the bear thing is so...ummm...tragic.

Are we supposed to feel really bad or offer up good thoughts/vibes for cyclists reading through bear country?

Or, is that like LAS saying I'm crazy and weird and I'm going to scale some mountain with my sister and girlfriend and everyone think of me in this totally arduous journey?

Cyclists are crazy, like mountain climbers. They can do their country thing and not need to bother the rest of us. If they need rescue, they should have thought of another bit of fun or exercise.

Okay, I'm really, really bitter about the cyclists. They have their own little lane in the 8-lane Sathorn road in downtown Bangkok. The lanes were narrowed to accommodate them and now the bike riders (who represent about half of total drivers have been forced to go to the very dangerous bicycle lane. If I pass you, I will push you over or closeline you if I have to stop because of your silly *** idea of a bike lane.

Mob of bicyclists injure motorist in Seattle

By Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) - A mob of bicyclists riding in Seattle with the monthly Critical Mass demonstration injured a motorist after an altercation.

Seattle Police spokesman Mark Jamieson says that on Friday between 100 and 300 bicyclists were riding down a street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, blocking traffic on both lanes, when a man and a woman in a Subaru station wagon tried to pull out of a parking spot.

But some of the bicyclists blocked them, sat on the car and began banging on the vehicle. Words were exchanged between the male driver and the bicyclists.

The driver feared being assaulted and backed up, but bumped a biker and enraged the group. In response, some of the bikers smashed the windshield and rear window. He tried to drive away but hit another bicyclist.

The car stopped a block down and the bicyclists surrounded the car. One biker punched the driver through an open window and another used a knife to slash the tires.

When the driver got out of the car a male suspect struck him with an unknown object in the back of the head. The driver was later taken to the hospital. His female companion was not injured

Jamieson says two men were arrested and police are looking for the suspect who struck the driver in the back of the head. He added police know the man's identity.

According to the Critical Mass web site, every month, bicyclists ride to promote bicycle use and assert cyclists' right to the road among many reasons.
