Amazing? I don't believe so. Except for the decades of the 60's and the 90's, Oklahoma has dominated the Big 6, 8 and XII. Winning the conference and contending for the national title is what Sooner fans expect year in and year out. Going 8-4 was considered a really down year for Oklahoma. Schools that can only dream of making the weekly Top 25 even once during the season would stuff weasels in their jockstraps to go 8-4.

I agree - if the auts are amazing then 50s, and 70's were awesome. the big difference is, except that one game against ArKansas, in the 50s and 70s we didn't get Blown out in Bowl games -Nor did we lose as many.

when you factor in the championship game, it's pretty awesome

i think only USC has done better in their conference this decade, and they don't have one

Other than usuc, does anyone else match OU's run of 5 conf titles in 8 years during the 1990's or 2000's

Nebraska 6 conf titles in 7 years:)

1991 Big Eight Conference Co-Champions
1992 Big Eight Conference Champions
1993 Big Eight Conference Champions
1994 Big Eight Conference Champions - MNC
1995 Big Eight Conference Champions - MNC
1997 Big XII Conference Champions - MNC

Also added another one, so 7 conf titles, 3 MNC's in 9 years....

From 1992-2000 FSU won the ACC championship and went 70-2 in conference play and 99-11-1 overall. Not bad.

I think when your coach is 150 it's probably a little hard to convince recruits he'll be around in 4 years. Maybe he and JoePa have lost their edge.

during much of their dominance neither FSU nor Miami were in conferences.

The ACC expanded, it is no longer Clemson and Virginia as their biggest competition

I'm not necessarily giving OU all the credit or anything like that, but if you look at FSU's record before & after 1-1-01, their downturn is stunning.

The 7 seasons before that night, including the '00 season, but not the O.B. (& remember, their run during that time was much longer than this, I'm just using the same amount of seasons before & after) :

76 wins, 8 losses, 1 tie. They also never won less than 10 games in any season during this time.

Post '01 O.B.:

58 wins, 32 losses. They won 10 games in a season only once in this stretch.

Just sayin........

Good thread topic....The 2000s have been great for OU in the Big XII...but OU hasn't really dominated the Big XII at a historic level this decade ala OU in the 50s, FSU in the 90s, or USC in the '00s. We've had a few occassional setbacks and some bumps along the way that prevented us from attaining that sort of gawdy resume.

Nevertheless, it's been really good. What's most impressive about OU's run through the Big XII this decade --a conference that's had 3 different programs (OU, Neb, UT) in the NCG -- is the lack of any meaninful second place program concerning conference hardware.

Texas won it all in '05 after winning the Big XII easily...and they've been a consistent presence in the Top 10. They're rightly perceived as one of the national powers of the decade....but '05 is their lone conference accomplishment.

The Big XII title race for the '00s is lopsided:

OU - 5

Colorado - 1

Kansas St. - 1

Texas - 1

That might be, in part, because the conference's two top programs of the decade are both in the South....but OU is 6-2 vs. the Horns in the '00s (on a nuetral field). And although the North was weaker in the middle years, Nebraska played for a NCG '01 and Missouri just missed out on playing for a NCG in '07 (because of OU). Regardless of the North's status, though, the South has remained a meat grinder throughout -- Baylor being the usual lone given.

OU has also been nearly invincible at home this decade...going 27-1 vs. Big XII opponents in Norman.

And in crunch time....OU has gone 5-1 in the Conference Championship Game. That's something USC in the Pac10 or Ohio St. in the Big10 don't have to deal with...much less all the great programs from decades past.

OU hasn't put up video game type numbers like it did in the '50s and '70s....but that's more difficult to do in today's game. The record would probably be perceived much more dominant had OU won a couple more bowl games (especially the Sugar Bowl in '03) but that's more about cumulative perception or narrative than actual conference events. Anyway...given the modern context...Stoops really has done an awesome job for OU in the Big XII.

Excellent wrap up.

OU has definitely been dominant and comparable to past decades given the parameters/parity of modern college football.

Way to dominate the whorns!
