View Full Version : Chaotic NC Years?

2007 was just another of a few in the past in which the NC selectors had to rely on drugs and liquor to make a decision.

1973
Notre Dame (11-0) AP Champs
Ohio State (10-0-1)
Oklahoma (10-0-1)
Alabama (11-1) UPI Champs (before loss to ND)
Penn State (12-0)
Michigan (10-0-1)

2001 (Who deserved to play Miami?) Records before bowl
Oregon (10-1)
Nebraska (11-1) did play Miami
Colorado (10-2) had higher BCS rank than several 1 loss teams
Maryland (10-1)
Illinois (10-1)

Are there any other years where many teams were legit to be the national champions?

Easy one IMO, ALABAMA SHB NC in 1977. Notre Dame lept them after defeating a Texas team when Earl Campbell and Johnny Lam Jones were injured.

COTTON #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated #1 Texas Longhorns 38-10 (Joe Montana QB btw)
ORANGE #6 Arkansas Razorbacks defeated #2 Oklahoma Sooners 31-6 (painfull to bring this up, sorry.)
SUGAR #3 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated #8 Ohio State Buckeyes 35-6 (another strong buckeye team)
ROSE #13 Washington Huskies defeated #4 Michigan Wolverines 27-20 (another impressive Big 10 effort)

1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, just off the top of my head. not to mention all the years OU went undefeated and didn't get one

when's the last time a 2 loss team has won?

last year was insane

Minnesota in 1960 went 8-2 and won the title over what should have been Missouri but the loss they got back as a win was too late for the pollsters and Ole Miss finished 10-0-1.

I think this discussion was full-on when Bammer math was a main topic on here and their 13 national championships. Wasn't it declared that only six of their titles were real and that if we did Bammer math, we would have about 16 titles?

USC is drinkin' that kool-aid now too and trying to claim A&M's 1939 championship. Kentucky lays claim to one of ours. Auburn thinks it was screwed in 2004. USC thinks it was three-peting in 2006...

As I said in another thread, it's time for the NCAA to put down the hammer (especially on USC) and start being a controlling body over college sports and not just rake in dough every fall season. The NCAA needs to declare one and ONLY one champion per year. None of this divided champ shizzle. ONE champion!

1978 - USC and Alabama become co-champions after #2 Alabama beats #1 Penn State with a dramatic goal-line stand, while USC defeats Michigan thanks to a phantom touchdown (Charles White lost the ball at the 1 before diving into the end zone.)
USC convinces the coaches they should be champs due to a win over Alabama during the regular season.

Meanwhile, OU wins a rematch with Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to finish as the only team to beat everyone on its schedule. The Sooners finish #3.

we blow out Nebraska in the 78/79 Orange Bowl. they score 14 meaningless 4th quarter points to make it 31-24. and IIRC, they score the 2nd TD on about the last play of the game. we're up 31-10 when the quarter starts.

Badger, since the NCAA doesn't make any cash off of football, I bet they'd *love* to declare a national champion. 'Course, they'd also *love* to run a 128-team tournament in 1-A football, and shorten the regular season to 7 games. Or 8 games and a 64 team tourney.

Yeah, because there are 128 teams in the FBS.

Yeah, because there are 128 teams in the FBS.

Hmm...

In 2007, there were 119 full members of Division I FBS. Western Kentucky University was in its first year of a two-year transition period from Division I FCS; it will become a full FBS member in 2009.

Oh, snap.

Exactly.

Any year since we've had the BCS.
