Do you guys ever check out the watt meter on the stationary bike or elliptical machine at the gym? I came across this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/19/fashion/19fitness.html?em&ex=1214107200&en=1cefef7d2e987fad&ei=5087%0A) about an elite cyclist and his training. His deal is to focus on the number of watts he's generating while training.

But power output is highly individual. The bigger the rider, the higher the output. Mr. Vande Velde, a relatively slight 5 feet 11 inches and 150 pounds, maintained an average of 470 watts in the 10-minute Georgia time trial. “That’s the most I’ve ever done,” he said. But he has a teammate, a much larger man, who he says, “does that in warm-up.”

That's a lotta damn watts.

That's more than enough to power a typical PC.

Yeah, I was thinking that I would peak at a little over 200 on the elliptical and average a hundred and something over the course of a workout... 470 for a guy that size... makes me feel puny. :(

Yeesh. Couldn't get the elliptical to get over about 350 and still keep my feet in the... uh... foot holder thingies. Got the recumbent bike up to about 500 and kept it there for all of 10-12 seconds. I was, however, able to average just over 250 watts on the elliptical for 20 minutes. That's the same as 500 for 10, right? :D
