Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a "vanilla" Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people decla ring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

I know you are not talking about CNN.

CNN International has had very extensive coverage of the floods in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. They probably had as much as or more coverage than the typhoon that hit Burma, the earthquake and subsequent floods in China, even though the number of deaths and degree of suffering were much, much worse in the latter two.

The CNN program I watched this morning was asking the tough questions about how the levees were found deficit with water seeping underneath them and they weren't fixed.

On a side note, I would think that the logistics problems of getting people out of Cedar Rapids would not be as difficult as New Orleans.

I dunno. I'm thinking this tradegy will be in the news for some time.

All you say here may very well be true...but most of what Olevet says is true as well.
I actually like the fact someone brought up these points. Some of them are great thoughts.

On a side note, I would think that the logistics problems of getting people out of Cedar Rapids would not be as difficult as New Orleans.

That's a huge difference between what is happening now and what happened in New Orleans. The areas affected now are mostly rural or small towns where you have to have your own vehicle to get anywhere. There are large portions of New Orleans where the majority of people didn't own vehicles and relied on public transportation to get themselves anywhere. Iowans drove away; Louisianans waited for the bus.

I believe we can't blame Bush on this one.

I believe it's one of two groups that are responsible for this heinous act.
1) al-Qaeda. They have trained fish how to slap levees with their tails until they break.

2) Ray Nagin. He's severly upset that "Chocolate City" has not been rebuilt, so he is making sure that the "Vanilla Fields" gets his wrath.

Or something like that.

Ole,
Hollywood celebrities can't help right now. Commander Xenu Xorbit (Tom Cruise) has ordered them on standby waiting for the mothership. They are leaving the earth because the end of the world is coming.

Or something like that.

Whatever.

Why do you deffend the media? I mean, it really is apples to apples here. A failed levee is a failed levee? Failure to evacuate is failure to evacuate. The number of people impacted is pretty close to the same? Where are the FEMA trailers? Where is all the finger pointing? I think one thing that gets one race versus any other race's social standing in the year 2008 is blaming the outcome of whatever circumstance on the government because of their race?

What everyone needs to figure out is that we have legislated and beaten this dead horse enough. Wich OleVet is just sarcastically pointing out. We just need to figure out that putting the government in charge of anything is going to be inherently rought with mismanagement.

New Orleans wasn't jacked up because there was black people there. New Orleans was jacked up because funding that was provided was mis-spent, and the goverment from the local, to the state, to the federal was mismanaged and ran by a bunch of dip weeds.

The point is that it just seems odd that no one is playing the "race card" in Iowa versus the huge "race card" that was played on New Orleans. Quit playing on everyone's guilt and lets move foward as a community together.

We can't do that until everyone quits repeating the now same old, tired, worn out, blame game cliches'.

Long enough to notice that Iowa didn't have any white and black malls. Nor did Iowa ever have a sheriff pubicly state that anyone found driving in this part of town (Garden Distict) that didn't look like they were from 'round here will be pulled over and asked their business. That sheriff won in a landslide, mid 90's btw.

Yeah. Agreed.

Have you ever noticed that people in western Oklahoma are generally a better class of people than those living in eastern Oklahoma?

It must be the hills and trees that bring out the hillbilly.

And, the same thing can be said for Texas. Actually, there is no difference between Oklahoma and North Texas (excluding Dallas/FW metroplex). There is just the I-35 divide.

But apparently not long enough to notice that there are approximately 12 black people living in Iowa. There's not a lot of racial strife in a place that has one race, although I'm sure that's changing with the influx of immigrants.

Scott D
6/21/2008, 12:26 AM
C'mon now, there are more than 12 players on the Iowa football team that are black.

Besides, depending on how compartmentalized people are in particular areas, they can retain 'old world' mistrust of folks of other european origin.

Iowa don't roll like that, at least not that I can remember. There's not a lot of ethnic compartmentalization, probably because it's mostly German with some Scandinavians thrown in for a little diversity.

Perhaps because the folks in Iowa (http://abcnews.go.com/US/Weather/WireStory?id=5205312&page=1) right now are at the stage where they're ****ed at the government (aka FEMA) for being less than forthright about the information regarding flooding, the flood levels, and the security they should have had against this type of flooding.

Scott D

not quite. There were at least a few people who said whether or not they try to rebuild comes off of what kind of reimbursement they get from FEMA. 99% of those people didn't have flood insurance because they were pretty much told by FEMA they didn't need it because they weren't on an 'at risk' floodplane'.
