Hornheads tell me that sMack is assembling quite the 2009 recruiting class. When was the last time he got the #1 recruiting class and what did that group do? Was it Chris Simms' class?

No, got it that year after Chrissy lost to us for the first time, remember? Was that 2002? He might have gotten another since...

Then we blew them out in 2003 and shut them out in 2004.

2002. Although 2 of their 5 stars never made it to campus.

The rankings need to go by who made it to campus, not who signed.

I think that group played a pretty big role in their MNC.

Well, yeah, they should. But that'd require a much longer attention span than most of us (myself included) have.

Sometimes folks go and grade classes retroactively, and that's much more informative... But doesn't inspire the insane frenzy of enthusiasm which "regular" recruiting typically does.

At least our fanbase seems moderately sedate about recruiting. LSU fans actually have a signing day gala at a hotel down here. They buy tickets. Get drunk. Make an entire production of it. Cheer as each new fax is received. It's a bit on the ghey side. Like the Village People.

Seems like something Tejas would do.

So LSU fans come up with an excuse to get drunk?

Rivals redoes their rankings sometime after summer but they don't actually switch them out. Why even bother then?

If I'm not mistaken we had the #1 class after the players that qualified actually showed up to campus in 2004.

The rankings have to come out right after the signing date so the Coach February title can be awarded. Mack won enough of em to be saddled with that moniker for all time.

Coach February supposedly landed the top class after the Texass MNC, yet Slingin' Sammy, Touchdown Gresham, D-Mu and Co. have done much better for us than said Texass class for the orange side.

I really do hope they end up with the #1 class. It makes it so much sweeter when our 3+star-avg. team spanks that number one class. Then the excuses begin to flow and life in S. Texas is good again.

VY played a big role in their mnc....not the rest of the group

This sounds like counting team rankings of the dudes we beat after the season's over instead of when we played them :)

Actually... Stoops' recruiting classes have surpassed Mack's recruiting classes at least half the time.

In on-the-field production I think you are generally correct, Lid. But it's rare that Rivals or Scouts or any of the "expert" sites rank OU (or any other school besides USC for that matter) ahead of UT.

That's to be expected, though, not because those services are anti-OU, but because Texas is a rich talent area, and you guys get a lot of the top-tier talent very early.

Where I think Stoops has done better is getting the "difference-maker" talents out of Texas (and other places). Mack acquires lots of high-caliber athletes, even ones that go on to great NFL careers. But other than Vince Young, he seems to miss out on those guys that can just take over a game at any time on the college level. Or, maybe it's just an overall attitude at UT. I don't know for sure where the problem lies, but that's the general difference I see between OU recruits and UT recruits.

2002 OU 7/2 UT 1/1
2003 OU 4/3 UT 15/14
2004 OU 8/7 UT 10/10
2005 OU 3/5 UT 20/13
2006 OU 9/7 UT 5/3
2007 OU 14/30 UT 5/3
2008 OU 6/13 UT 14/16

4 out of 7 years we've had better classes according to the rankings. Not that rare.

So, we need to watch out for the horns in 2012?

IIRC, Mack got the #1 recruiting class in '99, the year of the #1 offensive player in Simms, and the #1 defensive player in Cory Reading...then #1 again in '02, the year Simms left. Also, who can compete with USC?!?! What a monster class they are building, as they do EVERY year!
