I've got the DVR set to record all day and might just take the day off tomorrow. Probably my favorite tournament of the four majors.

7,643 yards. Why don't they just go ahead and put it in the rules of the majors that if you can't hit it 300+ you aren't even allowed to enter.

Just once i'd love to see an American major played on a short track, with ridiculously thick and nasty rough, narrow fairways and slick greens. Let ALL the players compete.

several interesting stories in this tourney.

Tiger's knee - this will be his first competitive round since the Masters.
Tiger has dominated when they play Torrey Pines for the Buick.
The all-star groupings - the top 12 in four separate groups.
Prime time golf on NBC - Saturday and Sunday.
Phil has played this course a ton - growing up in the area.
Will we get another first time major winner? I think it's three in a row at the US Open.
I also heard Bob Tway will be on his son's bag this week. Pretty cool.

i talked to my pops (he's there, it's his "hobby" to be a USGA rules official) this morning and he's saying there are several holes where the USGA is saying they will be able to dramatically shorten several holes so the 7600 number is a bit inflated...that on average *they are saying* it will play about 7300-7400. they are talking about playing one of the par 4's at less than 300 some days and at 380 the others. that kind of stuff, monkeying with the teeboxes. remains to be seen, but that's what he said.

he also says the rough is serious business being the kikuyu stuff (sp) many players aren't used to but that the USGA keeps the fairway ropes about 15 yards farther off the fairway than most tournaments to not bail out players who hit it way off line by bouncing off gallery or getting a break with a lie on grass that has been trampled. so, actually get to the "no cut" of the rough you really have to hit a foul ball.

overall, he seemed to think that while the weather conditions would be a factor (sort of overcast out on the golf course itself since he's been there--) that Torrey Pines would still play pretty hard. not Bethpage hard, but plenty tough.

as far as the Open played on on a tight, shorter course that will be Merion if a group of influential Merion members (and there are *a bunch* of them) manage to persuade the USGA to get their track one last Open. which they desperately want....before it's too late.

yes. don't have to deppen the bunkers, just use the wide furrow rakes like Jack did at the memorial....talk about penalizing. Narrow the fairways, let the rough go...6 inch intermediate. make them hit it in the fairways or shoot huge numbers

I hope they are wrong in estimating the winning score being 10 or 11 under.

i don't know where you get the me and the outdated thing....i've said nothing of the sort. i tried to provide some first hand "official" information for the interest of the board. that's it. and then you seem to be bent on ripping the USGA (in this thread) for some reason and they hardly have a monopoly on the astronomical length of today's major courses. if you are talking about the technology and such in the gam, again, that's hardly limited to the US Open.

i'll the defend the USGA to the extent that the people (i spent 6 days in the USGA tent at Pinehurst) i've talked to are pretty philosophical about the way they do things and protecting the game, par and the rules. the thing at Shinnecock (which was partly a mistake but also a function of the weather) really turned public perception (particularly among the people who *do* just like to see Tiger and -22 win tournaments) really against the US Open. at least the USGA takes a position, right or wrong, against the "spectator consumer demand/commercial appeal/viewers=advertising dollars" that the PGA Tour increasingly caters to and the spoiled children approach many of the players take about shooting 78 on TV.

i'm also just kind of goofin on you about the birdies thing.

King Crimson

to complete the thought. players complain about the "Tiger-proofing" of Augusta National every year. former winners, the middle aged players and older guys say that the course doesn't play like it's supposed to anymore. but, Augusta National and the Masters gets a free pass (especially on this board) as far as any real media or fan criticism while it's part of the "experience" to bash the US Open and all the evident sadism of the USGA.

yeah, I know you were. We generally agree on most things about the game and the history of such.

And don't misunderstand, my rip wasn't on the USGA so much as the whole trend of all courses pushing lengths to ridiculous numbers. I still think it eliminates players like Corey Pavin, who is a great shotmaker, but even at his best he couldn't compete with today's lengths.

So I'm not ripping the USGA, they've made plenty of mistakes, but always with the right intentions.

I personally loved the Shinnecock open....

Steve Stricker is tearing it up.

I have to agree with 4Life on this one too. I'd love to see a guy like Pavin or Funk have a chance in a US Open. However, I'm afraid those days are long gone. I miss shot makers and the guys who hit it 275 yards and put it on the fairway 90% of the time having very little chance to win a major of any kind, except maybe for the British Open.

I agree, but i don't know what you do about it.

my dad tells a story about Verplank at Bethpage that is kinda too long for me to type out but essentially Verplank told Tom Meeks (former USGA prez) that on one of the holes Scotty couldn't even drive the ball in the air to where they started mowing the fairway....and so he tells Meeks (he's out of contention) that he's gonna stand on the teebox at hit provisionals until he hits one in the tee to fairway sidewalk thingy walkway which is about 5 years wide where it *is* mowed....just to make a point.

one of the holes at Torrey this week has a 270 yard carry off the tee.

Augusta National gets a free pass by the media, simply because Tiger's good for a win there every 2 years or so on average. Also, I do believe the year that there were scores more like US Open scores, the Masters did get bashed as trying to do too much to "Tiger-proof" the course.

So, are there 3 Cowpokes and 2 Sooners in the Open?

actually 3 Sooners. Anthony Kim, Hamilton, and Hunter Haas qualified through one of the DFW qualifying sections. HH shot 80-70 to miss the cut by one. that's a nice Friday round and heckuva rebound effort. However, if you look at his score card he had a 5 hole stretch on Thursday where he was +6 with 2 doubles. that's tough to overcome on the other 31 holes when the cut is +7.

might as well play the Todd Hamilton game: i'll set his first round score over/under at 74.5, keep in mind Torrey is par 71.

74-74 would have won money from me, i tell you.

the sad thing about being resigned to the "other sports" forum is we miss that ****ing about golf is more than just scores. i'm not going to argue with it; obviously, golf is a "general sport". but it does seem like re-writing the rules that never were here in the present.

and incidental contacts with the SO illuminati always makes a major golf thread what it is: "if Tiger is in it, i'm watchin' on Sunday".

i figured that had more to do with the staggering brilliance of the last two posts i made there. since they still stand.

:texan:

it was nice inna day when a major thread would pull in some people and maybe they'd watch too. i would argue that a cultural event like the US Open is something that is at least as significant as to be shown on prime time Saturday night is more than just "general sport". clearly, the networks think so...that they can sell the ad time into later non-sport time spots.

but, that's fairly complex reasoning. the ad dollar.

well said. I'm watching yesterday and thinking "Tiger sure is lucky". The two drives he missed to the right were so far right he ends up getting a good lie. The long eagle putts - if Tiger throws 10 balls down he probably makes 2 of 10 at best. Then the chip in - it hits the flagstick square.

But he makes his luck - and has the uncanny ability to hit the biggest shot and the most critical time. He's amazing.

BTW, Phil Mickelson will NEVER win another major again in his career. His collapse at the 2006 US Open has pretty much killed his confidence with the driver. I said it the day after it happened and I'll say it again now. He's not the same player he was after that drive, that he sliced into the tent on 18 at Winged Foot.

according to the USGA people the other **** up was the 18th green at Southern Hills*. at Shinnecock, they say the wind started to blow from an unexpected direction and the temp was hotter than it had been all week and dried the greens out much faster than *anyone* on the grounds crew had ever seen...and they couldn't do anything about it once the players were on the course. ironic that Goosen is part of both of those.

*i've heard from my pops that SH will have to change that green to host another Open. it so sidehill that when it stimps like an Open course, it's just unputtable a lot of the times.

the only reason we are even having this playoff is because of course setup. Kudos to the USGA for moving the tees up and proving that you don't need 7,600 yards to make a great tournament.

this whole weekend was greatness. I'm hoping that they broadcast todays round on the innerweb.

Did anyone watch the US Open Challenge where a few hacks played Torrey Pines under Open conditions just prior to the tourney? From the tips? Romo and Timberlake broke 100, Matt Lauer and guy from Omaha with non-smoker's lung cancer did not. Looked pretty brutal out there for us average hacks.

OU4LIFE
6/16/2008, 09:09 AM
I would have blown up completely.

if Romo and TImberlake could break 100 however, I really think I could have as well.

Romo is pretty good. I'm not sure how Timberlake did it.

that went from being a chance to get one back to losing a stroke

let's see how he manages to lose a stroke on this one. Tiger's got him right where he wants him.. He's in the bunker and Rocco has about a 15 foot birdie putt.
