I've never owned a pair of boots, but I've been considering doing so for awhile. I was thinking a pair of basic brown leather Red Wings.
RW are ok, lookup Georgia boots or Carolinas...both equally good stuff and wear extremely well.
I've got a pair of Georgia boots, they look like hell but have seen alot of battle in bad weather, using my climbing gear...staples...nails and **** on utility poles are hard on leather.
I put some conditioner on them when new, to keep them from soaking up alot of water but i've been told that shortens the life of the leather since it cannot breathe.
They cost me $159, not bad for a good pair of boots.

One complaint against mine is, i'm flat footed and we are required to have a 2" heel for the climbing gaffs/ladder rungs for safety...and my feet kill me by nights end. Not alot I can do about that except bust my *** in some tech classes and get out of the video/internet/phone end and just stick to troubleshooting computers.

Time to ghey up an already ghey thread.

First.. a caveat... I'm a shoe ho... freely admit that... So, after reading this thread yesterday, I went home and counted...

4 pair Cowboy boots
2 pair golf shoes
4 pair work out/tennis shoes
1 pair white bucks
2 pair burgundy/oxblood/redwood color lace up dress shoes
4 pair casual, loafer type shoes
1 pair dark gray lace up dress shoes
1 pair tux shoes (lace up, patent leather)

Brownish shoes, including shades of tan, spectator shoes with shades of brown as its colors, butterscotch, all lace up dress shoes.. umm... well...
12 pair...:O

Black dress shoes, lace up.. uh.. well....
13 pair :O :O

BUT.. no sandals and no flip flops because those should not even be included as "shoes" and are incredibly ghey on men!!!!!

You know what's really gay?

Actually knowing how many pairs of dog coverings you own.

I've got boots all over the damn place. Some in the garage, some in the barn, some in the closet. I've got shoes all over the place. Some in my gym locker, some in the garage, some in the closet. I've got shoes and boots that are 30 years old, and some that are 30 days old. I've got flip flops (they're only gay if you get your toenails done like Lid), and a couple pairs of OU Hush Puppy slippers my kids got me for Christmas.

How many? **** if I know, and I damn sure ain't gonna count em'.

Sure there's something you can do about that, believe it or not. I've done my share of sittin' in hooks and I've experienced the exact same thing. If you're in your hooks all day, it can get so bad you can barely put weight on your feet when you hit solid ground. Your foot is actually curving around the J of the hook/ladder rung/pole peg and the tendons and stuff stretch out over the course of a day. Put 'em back and they get ****y.

Start with one of a couple things. One, ensure your boot has a steel shank, at a MINIMUM 3/4 length. The higher end Georgias, Danner, Wesco, all those are pretty much a lock. But you can get a 3/4 steel shank in your off the shelf brands like Red Wing and Wolverine, which is key. But you have to double check. Second, always climb in a lacer, and regardless of popular opinion, don't go higher than an 8 inch upper. You're not climbing Class C and you ain't Paul Bunyan. Third, get AWAY from a larger heel. They may protect your gaff, but as far as comfort, they suck balls. It lifts the heel higher and puts more curve in the foot, as well as restricting movement in the foot. That, in combination with the shorter upper and a lace-up boot you can adjust across the instep, will allow you to rock in your hooks. Every so often, pull your toes up. Almost as if you were standing and simply rocked your weight from the balls of your feet to your heels. But pull up hard, toes and feet. This flattens the instep, sinks your heel, and still allows your gaff to stay set. Give it a good stretch every so often, depending on how long you're in your hooks.

This is what I always climbed in. (http://www.redwingshoe.com/productdetails.aspx?prodid=1420)

Great all-around boot for what you're doing, Bud. Wolverine makes a similar boot, but they make one that's a knockoff for cheap, and a solid one like the Red Wing. The cheap one is crap. Good durability, easy to clean (so you don't track mud in a customer's house like a waffle will), and it fits the bill for a climber. But there's one more thing you need to consider, one that'll cost you a few bucks.

If I was a betting man, I'd say you were in Kleins. Lose the Kleins. The hook is narrow and over time, will fold your feet like a piece of paper. Invest in a set of Bashlins. The base of the hook is nice and wide with rolled edges, it's a light aluminum frame as opposed to the steel frame of a Klein, and makes a WORLD of difference. There's a good chance you can pick a set up in your local pawn shop. They feel funny at first because of the wider hook base, but with time, you'll realize just how low budget the Kleins are.

Good luck with it!
