View Full Version : Question for the ladies who know things about shoes

I need some help. As background, I honestly can't remember the last time I bought shoes anywhere but REI. I do have one pair of dress shoes (Black pumps with a closed toe that I like to think never go out of style:O ). I wear them about once a year (maybe not quite that often).

Here's the deal: I am going to a wedding Saturday afternoon. It is outdoors, but is actually going to be an old fashioned traditional wedding. I am wearing a shurbert green skirt (falls just below my knee) with a sleeveless white sweater. My legs are pretty pale, but I have some self tanner I can use that works pretty well on me.

I want to wear my black pumps because that would be oh so much easier than actually buying new shoes, plus I have a little black purse that I could carry to match (I'm going without Mr. NMS, so I'll need to bring a purse to keep my car keys in--I usually don't carry a purse).

Do you all think the black would be okay or do I need to buy something else? I really can't bear the thought of buying shurbert green shoes, so would I get white? Sandals? Closed toe? And what is the scoop with pantyhose these days? It'll be hot--can I skip hose or will that look trampy? Should I just nix the green skirt and go with a black skirt--I didn't know if black and white would look funny at an afternoon outdoor wedding).

Good lord it's hard being a girl. TIA for you help.

Nobody wears hose anymore - especially to an outdoor event.

Viking Kitten
6/10/2008, 02:20 PM
We'll find you something else, you can absolutely skip pantyhose. Self tanner is okay, just don't use the darkest shade, and make sure you exfoliate first.

JUST DO NOT WEAR BLACK PUMPS.

Can post a picture of the skirt after my meeting this afternoon. Its green with kinda white texturey threads going through it (cuter than I probably made it sound).
I knew you were gonna nix the pumps (deep down in my keen wearing soul I knew those would be wrong).
I've used the self tanner before....It's pretty light and I'll exfoliate well.
It will be hot, but the wedding is actually in the mountains a bit, so I'd guess.
upper 70s to mid 80s by the end (starts at 1130).

Oh, and some of you are more helpful than others. :)

DO NOT WEAR THE BLACK PUMPS.

Listen to VK! I endorse her opinion of NO BLACK PUMPS 100 percent!

Plain black shoes are just a copout anyways, which is why guys wear them all the time :D

You said this is a wedding, right? More importantly, an OUTDOOR wedding. Assuming this is in Oklahoma, flooded, rain-every-day-this-season Oklahoma, you are going to be dealing with a tad bit of mud and or messy conditions, regardless of how upscale the wedding is.

Therefore, I recommend going to Payless. You will pay $20 or less for a good pair of footwear and it won't break your heart to get them a little messed up outside.

Here, you need to find yourself some cool sandals with open toes that are summery and easy to walk in, just like the outdoor setting for the wedding suggests. Since its a wedding, white or off-white sandales would be appropriate, but I would probably go with tan or khaki colored sandals, because you'll be able to use these for other occasions later.

Oh, and needless to say, make sure your feet look nice enough to wear sandals by giving yourself a nice pedicure before hand.

Hope that helps! Have fun!

EDIT: I just saw the shoes VK posted. I have had bad luck with wearing heels outdoors in grassy areas - your shoe heel can sink into the ground, leaving a nice little hole where the heel sunk to :D However, those are very cool shoes!

I'll call my dillards and see if they have them in stock (I don't know if I can get them shipped to arrive by Saturday). They aren't really me, but obviously shoes that are "me" aren't going to fly at this shindig.

So you are thinking white sandaly things? I should warn you that I hike and run a lot, so I do need to cover as much of my feet as possible as a public service (callouses and the like).

That took me back to the college days when I worked Ladies' Shoes in Dillard's over the summer. You wouldn't believe how many half-insoles I inserted so some ding-dong could get the shoe in "her size."

Do what Badger says and get a pedicure.

Those shoes are very me, so I'm just suggesting you use them as a jumping off point for yourself. You may want a lower heel for example. Or as Badger suggests, maybe no heel at all depending on the conditions of the outdoor wedding.

You could do an off-white, a taupe, even a strappy silver. Just think of your shoes as an anchor for the entire outfit. If your feet look "heavy," your entire body will look weighed down.

Well of COURSE you do, cause she's a cute shoe person....
Okay, if they have a shoe similar to hers at Dillards or Shoes on a Shoestring I'll get it....But if they don't, can I do something like the ones i linked.

Honestly, my feet aren't gross, and they'll be groomed and toenails painted, but I can't get rid of my callouses (If I do my feet will be a big bloody mess next time I go backpacking, and I'd rather look dowdy at the wedding than ruin my next hike), and so I'm hesitant to wear anything too strappy.

Ok, there's an easy way around this, girl. I understand not wanting to part with your callouses when you hike a lot. I've gotten around some injuries on dress up occasions myself - I once had to do a formal performance but had an ugly scarred knee from a recent running fall - makeup to the rescue! :D

Hand lotion is your friend. It will soften your feet all nice and make any loose skin roll off with a little rubbing without you losing your nice foot armor callouses. If there's any discoloration, cheap flesh-colored Cover Girl face makeup will take the whiteness, ickiness color out of the callouses. Be careful not to makeup the bottom of your feet, because it will get off on your shoe and will likely sweat off in New Mexico heat.

Your other option would be what will be a good idea anyway - BAND-AID. They are flesh colored already anyway and will serve well as an added protectoin against new and uncomfortable shoes. Place them strategically around any areas with straps that feel uncomfortable or to cover ugly feety areas.

Your other option would be application called "New Skin" which is something that is clear paint-on substitute for bandages. It will be virtually invisible and still help protect areas of your feet when walking around and such.

Ok, that's probably too much info. Your longterm comfort is more important than short-term fashion, especially when you're just a guest having fun.... so have fun! :)

Trying to cover up the heel, eh? I actually like it in silver too, but then again, I don't remember the exact details of the rest of your outfit.

Viking Kitten
6/11/2008, 05:49 PM
I like that last pair the best, silver is an option that came to mind yesterday as you described the outfit. I would wear those shoes myself.

Just as a caution, that 4-inch heel might be pause for concern if you are not accustomed to wearing heels. That height definitely takes some getting used to. And since wedding receptions sometimes require a lot of walking around, you really should be able to enjoy the event and not have to worry about your feet being in pain. I'd maybe look for a 2.5-3" heel.

Viking Kitten
6/11/2008, 06:04 PM
Wait, I also just noticed the silver ones are not actually leather. Ix-nay on those. There is nothing more icky and less comfortable that sweaty, non-breathing vinyl shoes.

I am with M now, option two would be the best of the group.

They had VKs Antonio Melani's in stock at Dillards, so I went with those (the lady made me buy a size smaller than I thought I needed, but hopefully she knows what she is talking about).

I'm wearing them now, and I must say I do look pretty hot.

Can you deduct the money you spend buying clothes for coworker's weddings?

Thanks everyone. The SO fashion consulting team rocks! I don't know how I grew up without learning these things.

Crap...I just remembered....I guess I have to buy a white damn purse now, too????

Viking Kitten
6/11/2008, 07:30 PM
Good job! Those are hot! I might be persuaded to go pick up a pair for meself!

Now next topic: You do NOT have to buy a white purse, in fact matchy-matchy purse and shoes are kinda frowned on. Here's where you could do a metallic for pizzazz or even just a simple, goes with everything light taupe that you could actually get a lot of use out of. I have expensive children myself, so I have to think practically about things like that. A "one-time-use" bag is not in my vocabulary.

I don't know what your price range is, but I will tell you Antonio Melani makes great bags as well as shoes, and that brand is exclusive to Dillards. You might just check out their web site to see what you like. The beauty thing is, since it's an afternoon wedding, you can look for a purse that can be pretty functional and not limited to evening wear. Again, just think lightweight and light neutral in color.

Oh and since Czar is a tax guy, it is my duty to inform you that none of these things are deductible.
